Thinking about a Ryzen 3700X….

Ok thanks guys. I’d rather not have to do any tweaking, so I’ll grab the 3600. There’s much better availability at Microcenter too, as Nunz mentioned.

Edit:

Same proc and mobo.

Looking at this ram.

There's a couple of other options, but man I can't do that rgb stuff

That crucial memory that MNB got was single rank. I would look for dual rank memory like GSkill.

Check this out on @Newegg: G.SKILL Trident Z Neo (For AMD Ryzen) Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin RGB DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC

Aren't you reffering to dual rank ? Those ballistix are already dual channel they are 2x16gb

Do you really need 32 GB? If not, you can save a lot of money just going with 16 GB.

I am pretty sure that 32 GB kit of Ballistix is only single rank now, or at least it is not consistently dual rank anymore. From a performance standpoint that matters if you don't want to manually tweak your memory (if you manually tighten your timings all the way down SR vs DR doesn't end up making much difference--fraction of 1% either way).

When I was looking at memory recently for a friend's build the high cost of Micron E/H (Ballistix) made me decide just to go up to Samsung b-die. Right now you can get 32 GB 3200 CL14 G.Skill FlareX at Newegg for $209, which is only like $10 more than the memory you quoted. 3200 CL14 is equivalent, if not better bin than 3600 CL16, just manually set the memory timings to 16-16-16-16-36-52 in your BIOS (like, literally it is guaranteed to work, adjusted for frequency the timings are the same). Also if you give that Flare X 1.45v I'd be very surprised if it couldn't do 3733 or 3800 14-15-14-14-28-42, TRFC 270, which more or less maxes out the Ryzen memory controller (if going Intel it should be able to do at least 4000 CL17). You might be able to find Hynix CJR a little bit cheaper, but in the end it's the same story where you're only talking like $20-30 added to the build to get Samsung b-die which is better quality memory.

The only reason I would get Micron E/H over Samsung b-die is that b-die is temperature sensitive. So, if you're going with a case that will have poor ventilation (small form factor, etc.) and the memory may be running at 50C+, then Micron may be less of a hassle to deal with.

Newer Micron 16 GB modules are only single rank from what I've read. I don't want to go and look it up again, but from memory the 16 GB sticks aren't actually Micron E, but Micron H, and they use higher density chips so they are only single rank.

Honestly, I would rather have the extra 16Gb and not need it than wind up wishing I had it :)

This is the other kit I was looking at.

Pricey, but seems like it would tide me over for a good long time, as Nunz mentioned.

It shows dual channel though, not dual rank. I have to read up on 'rank' because it's been that long since I've upgraded.

edit: Is dual rank just having dies on both sides of the stick? According to an old Toms guide there's not much performance difference between dual rank and dual channel. has that changed since then?

Dual rank gives 5-8% performance improvement especially with AMD depending on use case scenarios. Dual channel is something different. Either way the GSkill you picked will have dual rank.

Sounds good to me KAC. I just don’t want to spend a long time picking and choosing and tweaking. I’m hoping to be at Microcenter in a couple of hours, it would be nice to just walk in and buy what I want.

 , can't wait to see what you get.

I just keep  thinking Intel is the "value" CPU these days.

You had to say that after I chose Intel

No purchase today anyway. I was there, but I keep questioning what I’m going with…it’s a Lazy8s thing :( I’m bringing my grandson there soon anyway and I won’t have the pressure of my work phone ringing then, so I’ll read up and wait a couple of days.

It seems like I can’t really go wrong either way, Intel or AMD as long as I grab a decent mobo and the right ram.

Pretty much. It still all depends on what you are gonna use it for. But yeah, either one is a decent choice.

Might want to think about the extra 3% you could get out of your video card and CPU combos with the Resizable BAR stuff too.

Resizable BAR? I don’t know what that is. Googling now…

Edit: Ok that’s really cool, thanks :)
