Black Myth: Wu Kong

I'm not sure why everyone is trending towards the ultra-difficulty side of the force? This does not make an IP better imo.

I never saw anything on where the difficulty level was for this, and I wouldn’t take KAC’s word on anything Souls-like. But this seems to be heavily story driven, so it might lean more towards a Ghost of Tsushima level of difficulty.

Which, to be frankly honest, would be nice.

I honestly don't think the difficulty is the only reason why people like KAC and Dungeoncrawler don't like Souls-likes.

For beginners they can also be very repetitive and grindy until you learn the ropes. If that early learning curve process is fun, like I found it to be then great. But I know some people don't have the patience required for it so they just mindlessly keep running into the meat grinder these games can be, then just quit in frustration.

They are also of course very obtuse in nature, and don't always clearly explain the game mechanics. Or, they are just flat out overly complex. I mean, the games do tell you everything you need to know but you do kind of have to dig for the info. Nothing's right in your face holding your hand, and I know that turns off a lot of players.

Still, I think enough people by now have realized these games are worth it and can be very satisfying and rewarding. Also, they really aren't THAT difficult once you understand the basics. Most Souls-likes have built in easy modes. Just build your character to be OP.

I think the difficulty level is focused on way too much. Like you said they have an “easy mode” and to be honest, the path of least resistance in all their games isn’t that hard.

I think what gets under my skin is the blanket, and absolutely needless thread crapping that all Souls and Souls-like games get.

Don’t like it? Ignore the thread. It’s not that hard.

To the bolded, I'll flat out say it. I think some people who do it repeatedly are just sore about the fact that the games look interesting to them but they don't have the patience to learn how to play them well. So the easy thing to do is just crap all over them and the people who enjoy them. Been hearing it from people like KAC for years though so it doesn't bother me. Keep doing it KAC, I'll just troll you right back. :)

Also, your point about the path of least resistance in these games being not too hard is a good one. Most of the time these games keep the real challenging parts tucked away and hidden, and usually completely optional or in DLC. The main story quest path is almost always standard fare that anyone should be able to handle.

I just keep bringing it back to lack of patience though. You can't just jump into these games and button mash to victory. They are very much a throw back to the retro gaming style where you had to take it slow and replay and replay until you mastered it, and I love that because it brings me back to gaming when I was a kid. But yeah some people aren't going to like that. Good thing is a lot of the more recent games have been adding features that respect the player's time better, like more checkpoints so you don't have such a long run back when you die.

Very much on point  It’s that depth and learning curve that hooks me so deeply. Anything else is just boring.

You’ve seen me post about my struggles trying to find games that don’t bore me to tears  It’s really a problem lol.

We are in the same boat on that.

I'm playing AC: Odyssey right now, just trying to play something different. Its OK, I'm enjoying the ancient Greece setting and the the general role playing. But the combat, yeesh. Its a giant step backwards from Elden Ring. Its just very basic action-reaction gameplay. I can play this combat with my eyes closed. It is somewhat like a lite version of Witcher 3 though, and I'm hoping it gets better as I progress so I'm sticking with it for now.

It's exactly that. It was a response to the massive success of witcher 3. One of those few moments where the big wigs went, "that looks popular you're making that now", that actually worked out for the better.

Yeah, the similarities to W3 is the one thing so far that was a pleasant surprise about Odyssey. The gameplay loop while not overly exciting or challenging, is familiar and comfortable to me. If the game ends up having a good story, and some fun combat upgrade abilities i think I'll enjoy it well enough.

Everything about it but the actual gameplay looks stellar. I haven’t seen all of the info about it that’s out there, but if they’re releasing this as a Witcher type rpg, then maybe I’m in, but if they’re jumping on the souls-like bandwagon they’re going to have to spice up that combat a bit.

Visuals, sets and artwork though, wow

yep, looks stunning but not sure about story, background, quests and yes, the combat. Hope it's not another shallow shiny package without any substance.

Yep, I’ll hold off for that reason, until I see some actual player reviews.

New Black Myth: Wukong trailer prompts fans to resurface misogynistic comments from developer
Game Science previously criticised for toxic workplace

In a now-viral tweet, user Sumerian Tater Tots shared a "friendly reminder that the game developer himself said this game 'needed no female players'".

They followed up with a translation of a Weibo post by the developer from August 2021 that claims "some things are made only for men", as well as other misogynistic and homophobic comments.
