Black Mesa v1.0

I'll be interested to see if they fixed the "ed_alloc no free edicts" bug. I couldn't complete the game without some console commands because of that.

Playing it now, pretty fun and no major issues. When I played it a while back I had lots of crashes.

They really knocked Xen out of the park. It looks great and plays quite differently (but there are similar bits). Gonarch was an excellent boss fight that goes for a while as it sort of stalks you. They mixed quite a few HL2 elements in here too, like power plugs and other puzzle type elements, which works perfectly well. The Tau cannon is a beast.

If I had one criticism of Xen it's that the barrel section is too long. Always hated it in the original and they made longer and more annoying. Game isn't hard on normal but there are a lot of things that can kill you pretty quick, especially environmental hazards and spike damage types (tanks or gargantuas).

Definitely a great remake

What is that barrel section you are talking about?

In Interloper. All the alien barrels being moved along the conveyor belts, going up and up and around and jumpng on jump pads and man it gets boring. Feels like they made it a lot longer but maybe I just blacked out the original.

edit: Just looked it up, yes they made it much much longer and far more involving.

It's my understanding that the barrels were the cause of the "ed_alloc no free edicts" crash as well. They would get jammed at either their entrance or exit points and it would end up having way more in the level than there was supposed to be. The game would start running extremely slowly and eventually crash. Whether it's been fixed in the new version or not I don't know. I recently started a new playthrough and have a long way to go to get to that point. The old saves weren't compatiible with the new version.

I didn't get a single crash in my 26 hours.

I literally couldn't complete the game without some console commands. Would crash every time at the same place in Interloper.

No crashes here either, played perfectly, except rim light is a bit rough (white outlines on some edges).

Apparently, they did fix the "ed_alloc no free edicts" issue. I just played through Interloper with no issues other than dying a couple of times. And I saw another guy on the Steam forums (the same guy that gave me the console commands to work around the problem originally) mention that the problem had been fixed. But now I know from personal experience that it's been fixed.

I did get a bit of a slow down in Residue Processing in the conveyor belt sequence. That might have been that way before, though. It's been a long time since my original playthrough.

I think I will wait until the game is out of the latest beta.

I already bought the game but I'll wait a bit longer to play.

Yeah, that'd be my advice. I bought it when 1.0 came out. Gotta say, I was rather disappointed with the developers. A lot of people encountered a game breaking bug (the source of which had been identified) that sat there for several months unpatched. And the devs seemed to be too busy taking bows and patting themselves on the back to fix it. The only excuse I can come up with for it taking that long to be fixed is that they might have been reluctant to break players' saved games.
