Assetto Corsa from Kunos Simulazioni

Short answer, set up your display as Open VR Beta (as I recall) in settings. The menus don't run in VR so you'll need to take off you HMD or set it for desktop.

Once you enter the sim it will slip to VR mode. It's great in VR but it isn't the most user friendly title.

This game is pretty tight.
Content Manager is the best launcher UI change mod I've ever seen.

Still the best race sim 6 years on. I have others, like Assetto Competizione, AMS2, RFactor 2, but for me, Assetto Corsa is still the best. Content manager and CSP just transform the game too, adding night time and rain.

You think otherwise?

Comparing to a decade ago, there's an absolute wealth of racing sims out there, with something for everyone.

I remember falling in love with racing sims because of Forza 2 and Race Pro, both on Xbox 360. But on PC, when it came to racing sims there was either the draconic iRacing, early in its development, or Race07, which was also draconic and technically outdated upon release. Oh and, without a racing wheel, you were essentially stuck with Need for Speed: Blegh.

Since then, the Xbox 360 gamepad really popularized gamepads on PC, and there's been a tremendous uptake of racing sims on PC of various calibers. Project CARS is on its second sequel already offering something similar to Forza and Gran Turismo, some Forza games are even available on PC, Assetto Corsa and Competizione offer Italian flair, rFactor 2 and iRacing have continued to grow, F1 2010 resulted in a solid F1 racing game for ten years going now, RaceRoom Racing Experience has that f2p draw, there's MotoGP 13-20 and Ride 1/2/3/4 for people who don't like training wheels, there's Dirt and Wreckfest and Automobilista and everything else out there.

I really feel there was a time when proper racing on PC was either extremely hard to get into, or extremely hard to find, and now we're spoilt for choice. There's something out there for everyone, and I really, really wouldn't want to have it any other way.

Will ray tracing fix this?

'This' being the ridiculous darkness of 2/3 of the interior while the other half is stupid bright. This is not how light works and how we see things.

Or is an HDR thing?

Or is there a fix now in settings I'm missing?

Got ~20hours in now.

It's definitely up there for best sim.

My current complaints are:

You have to quit and reload the game each and every time if you want to change cars or tracks. I'm so use to flight sims where you can change many main scenario things 'on the fly' while the game is still running.

Mod scene is huge and great BUT a complex mess.

Content Manager front end is also great but very overwhelming; soooooooo many things in many different areas can be set or tweaked it gets confusing what will truly take affect.

VR is so so. I'm forced to sit lower and closer than I'd like. If not, the cockpit view will clip part of the cars interior, looking horrible. Also the drivers seat headrest gets clipped into also if the viewpoint is not forced forward.

More VR: Using AC as an example, the state of VR is too uncanny valley and compromising for me to fully appreciate. Its neat to be there 'in' the game but it always looks so pants. (Reverb user btw) Pancake gaming is still where its at for beauty and high visuals.

Destroy, you maybe need to play around with your settings. I have found a couple of cars that clip if I look up and I can find my seatbelt floating in mid air if I lean too far back but otherwise, with over 40hrs in VR, I'm not having those problems.

I can't recall if AC has an option to adjust your default seating position but you should be having a better experience than you describe.

Mod scene is huge and great BUT a complex mess.

For racing titles, mods are generally stolen/ripped 3D models from other titles with copied physics from a different car that is unrelated. There are a handful of a mods where the mod maker really understands physics and does their homework on the car to get a good representation, but that's like the "one percenters".

Yeah, kinda sucks but at the same time its nice to be able to find and drive the car one wants.

Oh for sure, Content Manager does seat adjusting; the clipping issue is not in all cars, is easily fixed and reasonably tolerable.

I'm just whining. I was hoping for a more real world visual and sensory VR experience from AC but didn't get it. Another 7 years and maybe we'll get there.

All depends on what you are after... i.e. either a realistic experience or being able to drive any car ever made...

For me, I prefer the former but nothing wrong with people wanting the latter...

I like AC but it's a bit sterile. The Sol and shader mods with Content Manager improve it a bit and make the world a bit more interesting but it will still fall short of your wish.

Where VR really scores is probably at a much more subconcious level; better field of view and a realistic sense of scale and distance. I was without my Index for a couple of weeks and I was really thrown playing AC and DCS in pancake mode. They felt so artificial and my handling suffered dreadfully. VR makes a real difference to me but it's something deeper than just the graphics you conciously see.

>I like AC but it's a bit sterile. ... and shader mods ...improve it a bit. VR ... better... sense of scale and distance.

Agreed, you make some great statements.

>VR makes... something deeper than just the graphics you consciously see.

To most people, I think this here is the biggest, most influencing effect; and arguably the most important.

As a graphics wh0re, my problem is, this point also uncovers many visual flaws and glaring game shortcomings. You see how squared things look, surfaces don't line up, items are seen more obviously flat, the lighting on surfaces look totally off, etc.

I know what you mean. For me I'm happy with the trade off but VR can seem to have a kind of uncanny valley effect. As the overall effect becomes more lifelike the flaws seem to stand out more.

You talk about graphics but physics probably pushes my button more. Hopefully we will continue to see both areas advance 'til we reach that true holodeck standard.
