Assetto Corsa from Kunos Simulazioni

I think Kunos really need to work on bug fixing and features. I am a little annoyed that the title has reached V1.1 and is still having issues, crashes, broken menus, missing basic features etc. Its a good title overall, and the driving feel is great, however its something of a rough diamond at the moment and the devs really need to step up and fix whats already there before adding anything more.

Considering the team and their goals, I'm guessing Assetto Corsa will always be a diamond in the rough. Luckily for me, I haven't encountered any crashes or broken menus or things that seem awfully wrong, but I just do my own little thing and haven't even begun to use all of the game in its entirety.

What I *would* like though, is an easy to use multiplayer mode and LAN support. Whenever I look up multiplayer for AC, I find guides and port forwarding and whatnot and don't bother anymore.

I think people are expecting too much from Kunos. Anyway, a YouTube video from the recent DLC release (not my video).

Strange thing is, Assetto Corsa feels slower than real life - the sense of speed is less than the real thing. At least, that's how I feel. Could someone explain this? Afterall, by the timing you can see it's no slower or faster than the real life counterparts...

It's FOV (field of view). What makes things feel fast in real life is your peripheral vision (i.e. the trees and other things moving very fast off to the side). In a game/sim, you have limited vision if you make the FOV as close to real life as possible, because it cuts off that peripheral vision. For a F1 racer, things don't appear to be moving as fast for them as it does to us watching their onboard cameras. The helmets and limited body movement (from safety equipment) cut down on their peripheral vision.

In a game/sim, you can create a larger sense of speed by setting the FOV to include more area on the sides. However, that gets away from what the realistic FOV should be....

I understand. Another reason I ask though, is that I'm using a triple monitor setup. So if I want to look to my right, I have to actually turn my head a little - you'd think that'd be a high enough FOV to make it feel faster.

It's actually the opposite. If you want to feel faster, you have a wider FOV (meaning you don't have to turn your head as much because you have more of the play area on the sides viewable at once).

I dislike Empty Box... Not that he doesn't have good content, his delivery leaves a little bit to be desired.. However, he has a good video talking about FOV:

Also, some sims use "vertical" and some use "horizontal" caluclations for FOV. It's important to know which sim is using which to know how your adjustments transfer...

It still does not fix the non-native scaling issue on Optimus setups. The patchnote made me hopeful, oh well.....:(

By the way, the real life looks more washed out -- guess the real sun is incredibly bright.

I think that just has to do with AC not really having truly dynamic weather/environment settings (where they could set the time of day/year so the sun would be in the same position as the real life video). I've seen some AC videos and in some cases it can cause a similar brightness on their windscreens but it seems to be more track dependent (that their settings are more static).

Kunos only has themselves to blame. The EA was a much bigger success than they anticipated. Instead of sticking to their vision they started having polls and adding extra features to the plan. The "Dream Pack" really is amazing, all 10 cars and laserscanned Nords are top notch. The problem is the core features of AC are in need of alot of work.

AC has a stuttering issue that's been around since the first build of EA, I'm in this group. The AI is horrible right now. Some tracks/combos it's almost decent, then you get other combos where the AI is horrible. The new flag system is almost laughable, they really should have held this back until they had something better. The career mode is a joke right now, not to mention almost unplayable with the current state of AI.

I know my post is bashing but I really like AC. Kunos needs to stop everything else and focus on the core issues right now. Get the AI fixed, optimize the engine, and make a decent career mode.

Unplayable? :hmm:

There's a big difference in difficulty from car to car, track to track but there's no problem just launching the races and driving them - that is, not in my experience, and I've gotten pretty far by now.

Of course, eight tracks constantly repeated gets a little old. I wouldn't mind more (international) tracks.

True; aside from shadows, the sun doesn't really matter for AC it seems. Of course, it may be the case that the "washed out" looks of the real life is a result of having a camera in a relatively dark cabin, filming outside where it is much brighter. It probably isn't something they want to simulate.

It is not like those who are responsible for "Dream Pack" (artists, modeller, and so on) can do anything about its core issues. Although I wish if they actually fix Optimus/non-native resolution issue (the only other game I have that has this problem is Graviteam tactics, which was made for Windows 7...), I think they are doing steady work fixing/adding features.

I never said the dream pack was the root cause, and your statement is incorrect. You don't simply drop a new car into AC without having to do some physics work. Betting alot of work went into getting the DRS/KERS of the P1 working. What about the AWD physics used by Alfa 155, it's the first AWD in AC???

My point is, they need to stop trying to add features that weren't promised at the beginning and get core issues fixed first. Weather and flags are both new additions to 1.1. AC has tremendous potential and I want it to succeed.

...and apparently, it's got free DLC coming that adds another five cars and the Zandvoort circuit (Netherlands). A great track to have in this game I think. Haven't seen the announcement spread through the regular channels yet though, I think they're maybe waiting for the E3 barrage to settle down.

Yep, Zandvoort is a great great old school track. Has a fantastic flow for about 3/4 of the lap, the last sector is a bit stop and start, but overall its a superb circuit.

Yea, the bonus content is always welcome, without wanting to sound like a negative nancy, it's a shame it's all road cars, but I beleive there are also some free racing cars coming up soon as well, for instance the Arbarth Cup car.

Apparently the next update is doing a big upgrade of the MP system, which frankly is needed as the netcode could be better, mainly with collisions.

If they're going to work on the multiplayer, I hope they do away with that insane Dedicated Server / edit the ini files / manually forward ports crap. Make a proper interface in the game, let me set up LAN games like I do with any other game.

In single player, I'm now at the point where I've got to do 30 lap endurance races with a BMW Z4 GT3. With a lap time of over two minutes for the Nurburgring GP Strecke, that means a race of over an hour.
