Official NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 Series & H100 Thread

I wouldn’t risk power with the graphics card. If it is causing issues might be a good time to have a better PSU.

It seems odd that you'd be having trouble with a 1000w PSU, especially an EVGA G2 which I was under the impression was a decent quality PSU. After all the talk of huge power draw the 4090 didn't end up drawing that much, and the transient spikes are better according to GN. I'd think 1000w would be well more than sufficient.

His Gigabyte 4090 isn't a reference design so who knows how high the transient spikes are. Depending on what CPU he's running total system draw can get up over 600W before any power limit increases and additional overclocking on the GPU. Even if the power draw is within the PSU's capability, some just don't cope well with high transient spikes and/or specific durations of these spikes.

Just be careful guys, there are certain loads that can pull huge amounts of power. In MSFS at 4k 140% render res my 4090 was pulling close to 600W.

Genrral gaming is fine though.

Yup, its not too difficult to 100% utilize the 4090 at 4k. We need a 5090 stat!!!

Been running it at +80/512 96% power and loving it. Granted, I’ve really only played Genshin Impact for any extended period of time and that was already capped on the 3090. Still might pick up a 1300w or so because the games will come eventually.

Yeah 1300 w is quite an investment. I paid like 190$ back in the day in 2015 and thought I have gone loco. However, it was one of the best decisions ever when you consider hardware.

CableMods custom PCIE 5.0 cables are reported to be burning up. Fun times for innovation.

Nooo :(

I’ve read a bit about complaints both with the cablemods and without that end users can’t feel that “click” when connecting them, that some just pull out no matter the force used to seat the connector. I wouldn’t think it’s always end user error, but given these connectors I can’t help but wonder if it’s just a poor connection issue again. Case doors pressing hard enough against the top of the card to unseat or angle the connection a bit.

Yeah there is basically zero feedback when you plug the connector in. This new connector standard is just absolute trash. I really hope this is the first and last generation to use this and they come up with a better design for the future.

At this point, the best course of action seems to be to shove it in using strong force, maybe tug on it to make sure it doesn't come out, and then push it back in again for good measure.

Use the damn cable in the box. Don't be stupid.
Public service message brought to you by KAC. :bleh:

The problem is the stiff squid cable adds another 1.5 inches to cards that are already extra wide, so even pretty wide cases end up having clearance issues. This whole thing doesn't seem to have been very well planned out.

You do get a silent but slight click and I just made sure after pulling and pushing slightly to make sure it was in, as Tech Jesus instructed.

As for the Squid, I just made peace with it.

Overall this card is crazy fast, over 2x my 2080S and super cool. 52-57*C in new world, vs 73-78*C with my 2080S. I know it was $200 more then it should have been, I spent what I would have spent on a 3080 10GB when it was on ebay.

Agreed - I couldn’t feel any kind of ….anything…that reassured me it was seated properly. I’m still catching myself glancing nervously at the computer when I fire up a game. I did order the cablemod connector, but that won’t be here for roughly another month, so, to address the next point - my case side stays on the floor until that comes in.

I genuinely do not understand how that connector and short/stiff cable passed approvals.

I definitely heard a click, but it was very quite. I also cleaned my case and added a 3rd 8 pin to my PSU in silence, other then me cursing having to cable manage better.

I believe EGOR said they need to have the 4 pins shorter so if it is not in correctly, it will not boot. That is very smart. But I agree, the 6/8pin connectors never had this lack of confidence in a cable till now with the 12VHPWR cable.

That’s a really good idea for the 4 pin part of the connector. Fwiw I just got my card yesterday so I’ve had plenty of time to read about connector issues, and plugged mine in before installing the card. It just felt like I could get much better leverage that way. There was no click that I could feel or hear, but it did stay firmly seated after a few gentle but firm tugs.

The squid…that protrudes about one inch above where the side of the case would be. With even gentle pressure on it I could see the connector beginning to angle downward. I figured better safe than sorry. I could bend the squid and then connect it, but the thought of a hotter wire due to resistance talked me out of that.

Bottom line - I’m not rich, please don’t burn

Guys there is a big ass tape on it. Don't bend the tape. Bend after the tape. Simple.
Also I don't know why its called a squid if it has 4 legs. 8 leg connectors are 2 years out. :bleh:
