Before upgrading to Windows 10...read!

i've seen a bunch of posts by Lazy8 concerned about Microsoft spying on him, but didn't he get an Ipad recently? I didn't read any posts about him showing concerns about Apple spying on him, or the various crap they've put in their phones/OS to spy on you.
All of a sudden Microsoft became this evil corporation out to get you as soon as they released Windows 10. Get the F outta here.
Hope he got rid of all his smart phones/ipad and got one of this dumb flip phones and installed Linux on everything he owns.

Seriously? Show me the posts where I said MS is spying on me. Post em up.
I'm still waiting Payne.

Post it.

Ask yourself why Microsoft wants all the data they collect. It is not for shits and giggles they collect it so they can monetize. And guess how they will do that, either by selling the data or using it for targeted advertising and the like. Windows 10 is "free" for now but no way MS would just give up a huge source of revenue they have to replace it somehow.

And I can pretty much guarantee how they do it will not be beneficial to the consumer.

I agree with you 100% nothing is free, I have been in the computer security field for over 10 years it is next to impossible to stay safe on the internet but I am not going to give my stuff away.

I use one credit card for online purchases and use strong passwords more than 15 char all the time but last year my CC company notified me that my card was found on a computer in FLA so I was issued a new one. As careful as I am somehow someone I did business with got hacked and my card was stolen. I also have free credit watch for 5 years do to the Anthem hack last year so I am sure all my medical records have been stolen.

This gets better everyday.

Well enjoy your false sense of security if you don't want to have a real conversation i'm out.

I will say this one last time windows 10 out of the box is not safe. It can be fixed by turning off all of the switches Microsoft left on by default. If you don't understand that its on you.
Oh btw how come you never answered my question about Microsoft storing your password on their servers? Its a fact they do it.

They are spying on you, and so is everybody else. welcome to the future.

Learn to read troll. I'm really getting sick and tired of immature, idiotic responses from brain dead rejects. Here, I'll bold the pertinent parts for you.

If so, why?

I'm making a separate thread so the replies don't get lost in the main thread, and I'm hoping for a mature and productive discussion about my reasons below.

PLEASE refrain from flaming or generic, non-constructive replies. If someone posts something in error, please provide a reliable source in your reply as to why it's not correct.

My reasons for cancelling are based largely around the fact that I don't like the direction MS is pushing with the new OS regarding data collection and loss of certain choices, and the fact that I have a perfectly running Win8.1 installation makes me question whether an "upgrade" is worth it.

1. Forced driver updates. Yes, that can be tweaked, but I shouldn't have to. It isn't MS's place to dictate which drivers I run.

2. Cloud services integration. Much more tightly interwoven with the main OS. Again, it can be disabled and removed, but it requires jumping through several hoops to do so.

3. This excerpt from the ToS.

Yes, it can be opted out of at the expense of certain functionality, but I'm not comfortable with MS retaining whatever personal data they choose to collect to begin with. To boil much of it down, MS is going further and further down that road that collects as much info as possible about absolutely everything it can regarding what we do on the web, between the cloud, Cortana and browser tracking, and that shouldn't be supported imo.

Here's a couple of decent reads on the subject of privacy and win10.

http://bgr.com/2015/07/31/windows-10-upgrade-spying-how-to-opt-out/

http://www.polygon.com/2015/7/31/9075531/windows-10-privacy-how-to

If any of this is incorrect, please respond with factual sources and not cries of "FUD!!"

I really wanted to like this OS, but I value my privacy a lot, and can't support an OS built by a company that's moving to compromise it.

Thanks for reading.

There, you see that? It's called looking for verifiable facts and asking questions in order to separate FUD from fact.

You ARE capable of understanding that, right? RIGHT?

Go find someone else to troll and attack bud. You've accomplished nothing here but prove you aren't very smart.

EDIT: Here's more of me "Crying" just to prove a point about you trolls.

Same here, except for thieves.

I can understand the whole LE scenario, even if I don't like the loss of privacy, but my shopping/browsing/email habits are my own and no one elses.

MS does NOT need to know the contents of hot email exchanges between my wife and I.

:manches: :p

That's some serious tin foil stuff there, a joke about sexy emails between the wife and I.

Thanks man, I saw that one while browsing, and a few others.

I can't say I'll never install 10, but between the updates fiasco and microsofts direction on the privacy it's given me pause enough to wait a while and see what they do.

I figure 3-6 months should be long enough for reputable folks to separate fiction from fact and for MS to at least announce changes they plan to make. That still falls within the one year upgrade window for me, with hopefully less chance of any bugs ruining the experience for me. :)

Oh no, look at that. I want to find out what's true or not. The horror....

I'll let you know when people are knocking down my door and stealing my life away...

There is no "real conversation" to be had here. You are not convincing me of anything with your outlandish posts and I already know it is a waste of time to try to argue otherwise with guys like you. You are dead set in your ways... It's like religion or politics, forget it.

Seriously though, WiFi password... LOL...

9 out of 10 have no clue on what they are doing and have no idea the setting exists.

Yeah, whose fault is that? Oh I forgot, no one takes responsibility for anything anymore. People immediately look to point fingers elsewhere while choosing to be ignorant. Of course we also have mainstream media pushing fear-mongering articles on a daily basis... Such is life. I tend not to pay attention to all the BS noise or worry so much.

Uh, calm down?

You know, having concerns about security doesn't make one a tinfoil hat wearing nutter.
Yeah, whose fault is that? Oh I forgot, no one takes responsibility for anything anymore.

But you seem to be dumping on people that are trying to take responsibility and limit or turn off what info MS sucks out of their system.

Uh, calm down?

He tells me to F off along with a few other choice words and I need to calm down? :p

Your second line is exactly what I'm saying to payne and others trolling here. I'm defending that, not accusing anyone of it.

He tells me to F off along with a few other choice words and I need to calm down? :p

I'm not saying I would be calm but you should be. :bleh:

...anyway, I don't see anything wrong with being vigilant and protecting my data and my privacy. The worst that can happen is, nothing.

lol, I agree with you completely, on both counts. :p

Seriously though, WiFi password... LOL...

You've apparently never lived in an apartment building or densely populated neighborhood.

People piggy back on their neighbors' in range unsecured Wifi all the time. I'm regularly in range of no less than 5 of my neighbor's Wifi connections, and yes some of them leave it unsecured.

There have even been stories of scumbags downloading kiddie porn and other illegal activities while on other people's Wifi, so as not to get caught. That is the real concern, IMO.

It is certainly possible a hacker could somehow grab the encrypted Wi-Fi Sense password and decrypt it. Not saying this is extremely likely, and that Wifi Sense will make these problems become more rampant, but it does give hackers one more weapon in their arsenal to use, and they are always looking for new weapons.

This might be of interest to some:

Ultimate Windows Tweaker

The three biggies to disable, to my mind, are Telemetry, which is the one which tracks your general usage of the OS; Disable and reset advertising ID, which is what leads to targeted ads; and Disable Windows Update sharing, which isn’t a privacy thing but does very quietly use your bandwidth to speed up other folks’ downloads of Windows updates. It’s cheeky given Microsoft have All The Servers, and it can result in web slowdown in some circumstances.

If you’re particularly worried about personalised ads, you should also go here and set all options to off if you haven’t already.

Nice post and spot on.

Here is another take on it from krebs who is a God in the security field but some will still not be concerned here. Of course SoCalMX70 will just add his LOL after bashing everything we post on the issue. This link points out the difference between Apple and Microsoft.

3 apartment buildings. With the one I'm in now, wifi is so crowded that 2.4ghz channels are virtually unusable. I do 5ghz only for my wireless devices.

I'm not concerned. I will know if someone piggybacks my connection (which won't happen...) and I'll change my password if necessary.

Someone downloading illegal material via my connection? I'm not even going to get into how that doesn't put me in any single bit of danger. At the very limit of a worst case scenario I'd be slightly inconvenienced.

Well if you count being arrested and having to waste time, money, and your good reputation going to court as "slightly inconvenienced" then good on you.

I get it, you are all about going full lockdown. Keep on keepin on. Don't compare MS and Apple (or Google, or anyone...) when it comes to privacy though. They all want and get the same data, whether one method seems more "friendly" or not.

As far as your previous post:

Oh btw how come you never answered my question about Microsoft storing your password on their servers? Its a fact they do it.

I must have missed that you even said this. Ok, they store my password, good for them. When an article comes out that there was a major security breach and my password (among millions of others) is in plain view on the internet, I will change it, just like I did with my Google password, just like I have done on several retailer websites when they have notified me of security breaches.

Look, I'm not pretending I'm immune to security/privacy issues. I've just come to terms with a couple things. One being that this is the price we pay for the conveniences and technology we have in our lives. Turning off a few options in Windows isn't going to fix anything, and certainly shouldn't make anyone feel anymore "safe" if they are really that concerned. If you want true privacy, I recommend completely unplugging, no internet, no cell phone. Also, cash only, don't use a bank account. Hopefully you are self-employed or can at least get paid under the table... But that is all ridiculous right? First world problems. Corporations control just about everything.

The second thing is, there IS a limit to it all. I understand exactly what happens if someone gets certain passwords or private information. My life will not be ruined. Some people seem to think they will go to jail, lose their job, their family, friends, and end up in a ditch if certain information gets out. Sorry, logically thinking and following these scenarios from start to finish, it just doesn't happen like that.
