Before upgrading to Windows 10...read!

This seems a little off to me. Why would nVidia release a driver for WHQL cert if it was so broken?

It's happened before. Nvidia has released numerous sets with pretty broken fan speed issues.

I have to admit I am not a fan of the idea of forced updates. If I'm happy with currently installed hardware drivers I do not want to be forced to update them anyway.

EDIT: I'm still on 8.1 and I think I'm going to hold off on the update to 10 until we see if MS changes their stance on this. Security updates are one thing, I'm ok with that, but not driver updates, no way.

I am confused.

Pretty sure when I am in Windows Update on 10, I have the option of picking how my updates are deployed. is there another build with something else in it I am not aware of? Or is this based off of what the final build will supposedly have?

The force update is only for Home. You should be able to choose your updates from Pro Edition and up. I posted about this issue in the windows 10 thread awhile back.

Well that is good to know/be reminded of.

I have 8.1 home on my laptop, so wouldn't my upgrade be Win 10 home?

The author of the article said this in the comments
Hi Vic, actually that’s not correct. Home, Pro and Enterprise cannot stop security updates and only Enterprise can stop feature and driver updates. Enterprise is only available in volume licences.
Is what he said accurate? This is the worst idea ever.:bleh:

Windows 10 Pro has a new "Defer Upgrades" setting

Also overlooked in the discussion, Windows 10 Pro build 10240 has a new check box in the Settings, Update & security, Advanced Options dialog. My guess is it only appears on Win 10 Pro systems that aren't attached to update servers. The box says "Defer upgrades." There's a Learn More link that leads to a Microsoft page that states:

Some Windows 10 editions let you defer upgrades to your PC. When you defer upgrades, new Windows features won’t be downloaded or installed for several months. Deferring upgrades doesn’t affect security updates. Note that deferring upgrades will prevent you from getting the latest Windows features as soon as they’re available.

So it seems Pro might give some control on updates(Features). It will still force security updates.

This forced updating sucks .. I've read about it in the FAH beta forum. Windows doesn't detect that FAH is currently running on gpu's and updates the graphics driver pretty much hosing the current work unit. Atleast I'm running Win 8 pro so I can delay the upgrade to 10 until somethings figured out or I have Linux installed for folding and just boot over to Windows when I want to game.

Wouldn't this be for critical items only with the optional items like drivers user selected?

It doesn't sound like it from the Nvidia driver complaints. I think this what everyone is most concerned about. It sounds like it will update without your knowledge. The only way you know an update has been applied is when windows nags the **** out of you to restart. I hope it's not like and it doesn't force you to restart.:bleh:

I don't really get the reasoning for this. People say it's for computer illiterate users but isn't windows configured out of the box to automatically install the updates?

The fun thing about Windows 10 is that it installs the hardware drivers and any updates automatically as a normal update so if nVidia pushes a driver into WU it'll install it for you if your drivers are older.

While testing the Insider Preview it "bricked" my NUC box when they released a FUBAR Intel GPU update for it.

I've read a few articles on this so far this morning. The seemingly best advice I've seen is one author urging to hold off on 10 for 3-6 months. Basically give MS time to hose a decent number of systems with forced updates and the crowd time to sharpen pitchforks.

Then see if MS responds with bs or changes. And that's what I'm going to do.

If this is actually true, forced driver updates, then I think it will be quickly rectified by the community or by MS.

Forced windows updates though? I could see that happening. Still glad I decided to wait a few weeks at least.

Agreed. I update at least twice a week anyway, so the windows updates don't bother me. Device drivers though, I'm not good with that.

Hopefully that's changed soon.

EDIT: SEE?

http://www.neowin.net/news/microsof...pdates-to-windows-10-causing-crashes-for-some

The Windows team, it seems, has no time to rest, as Microsoft is still pushing out updates to Windows 10 days before the launch of the OS; the weekend was no exception. A rare occurrence, Microsoft's teams have pushed out two updates over the weekend.

The first, KB3074681, was pushed out on Saturday and, as is usual with these small updates, not many details were provided about what the update fixes. There have, however, been reports by some users that the update is causing Explorer to crash at times. This usually occurs when a user tries disable an active network adapter or when trying to uninstall applications under the Programs and Features tab in the Control Panel. As the application crashes when trying to uninstall any programs, it makes it nigh impossible to even uninstall the update.

Trust me...once this goes RTM and you hear all the screaming they will put the update options back in. Update drivers are not necessary if stuff is working. That's the golden rule.
