D&W: Better than DP 2 but not as good as DP1. Still a must see for MCU and DP fans. Hard R. Hilarious. 4rth wall whats that. Great cameos. Cool soundtrack ect ...

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga 7/10 - decent enough but not as good as fury road

Star Trek Beyond - 7/10 Summer action flick, was fun and didn't overstay its welcome. Star ships are amazingly durable though.

loltwisters. 4/10.
Fly me to the moon. 6.5/10.
Quiet place day one. 3/10.
... and I watched a ton of other movies that I don't remember.

Alien Rom: 6-10. Pretty much standard fare for an Alien flick. Nice to see practical effects in there and good cast but story is bare and lore is again not respected... Felt like mostly a rehash of the first Alien movie.

Twisters: around 6.5/10. Pretty decent but not as good as the 1996 one. I liked how they reversed the status quo for the chasers.

A Quite Place Day One: 8/10. Really enjoyed it, more than the other two overrated movies. It has actual emotion which is quite rare to see done well.

Longlegs - 6/10 maybe. Started pretty well, cage is kinda creepy, maika is awesome. Ending sucks ass.

Beetlejuicy. B2 wasnt bad at all... cute, bit different from the first one but like Furiosa the energy is dialed back a notch... course Keaton isnt a young pup anymore... some cool 80's tunes and even a rock opera...

Keanu 6/10 - Watched it for the kitten which was really cute. The rest of the movie had a few funny moments here and there.

Saw Beetlejuice 2 and it was alright. Certainly the best thing Tim Burton has done for a while—I didn't expect much going in given Burton's output over the past decade or so.

Bullet-point thoughts:

  • It's interesting how they handled the Jeffrey Jones situation. I think they had a little fun with including his character in such an off-hand/roundabout way.
  • Monica Bellucci's character was more of a weird secondary plot device than a character...they could have pretty much told the same story without her and with a few minor changes. There was another character that initially seemed like they were going to be more significant to the story but ended up being disposed of once their purpose as a plot device was fulfilled. I'd say it has an issue with uneven characters and storytelling in general.
  • Some aspects of the story just repeat things from the first movie and they make a few obvious nostalgia plays.
  • Good practical effects, costuming/makeup, sets and CGI.
  • Toward the end of the movie it tries to recapture the fun of the song and dance number from the first movie but just doesn't do it as well.
  • It's funny that modern PG-13 standards wouldn't allow them to repeat the first movies single F-bomb. They tried to do it, but they bleeped it out—not sure if they thought that was turning it into a joke or trying to make a statement about it, but it's just weird to hear something get bleeped in a theater like I'm watching a TV edit. I wonder if it will still be censored in the streaming or disc release.

Unrelated to the movie itself, the theater forgot to turn off the bright overhead lights they use when they clean, so the the room was fully lit for the trailers and part of the opening credits. Herp derp.

The Boy and the Heron 6.5/10 - The animation is beautiful and had some Spirited Away type characters but the story was confusing and it wasn't til I read some reviews afterwards that I can see the connections.

Cuckoo (2024) - 6.5/10 Not a bad horror movie. Points for the monster, but it's a bit weird and not quite effective.

Sounds about right. Hard to follow.

Here's an analysis someone did about the movie, likening the uncle to Miyazaki and his magical realms he's created, and noting that it will all come to an end. Very poetic. And if the point of the movie is a swan-song (or heron-song?) of sorts, and a nod to his grandson that he accepts that Goro need not take over the studio and live his own life, then it's less about the plot, and more about the symbols and meaning that it had for Miyazaki.

Oddity

An enjoyable horror film that sort of snuck under the radar. It's a bit on the slow side. But it does a good job of creating a creepy atmosphere.

Sonic the Hedgehog - 6.5/10 Noticed this on Netflix. Started off slow and rest of the story turned out pretty generic. Jim Carry had some funny lines.

Salem's Lot

Not that good, it felt like I was watching Super Salem's lot Turbo, the pacing was way off, everything just happened too fast.

Deadpool & Wolverine 7.5/10 Quite a funny and entertaining movie that is just as much about saying goodbye to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine as it is about Deadpool. Cameos were of older heroes, so I felt like this was definitely targeting the 30+ crowd, which is nice. Multiverse stuff was mostly a parody, so it was alright.

Speak No Evil (2024) 7.5/10 Solid thriller even though a large part of it is predictable. James McAvoy is amazing as usual, pushing the family in really clever ways. The Ben character is super annoying due to his reticence to take action.
