What is happening to Windows Phone?

I actually bought a WP 7 a long time ago because I bought a Zune HD and I loved it. I loved the interface and how easy it was to use.

I have bought WP7, 8 and WP10 phones, I like some stuff about WP 10, like how everything is integrated between my surface pro, my win10 gaming PC and my phone and I am not really big into apps.

They had a great music/podcast/video interface with the Zune HD.. it was fantastic. All they had to do was copy paste it into the phone and they failed. I was never a huge fan of the Samsung Focus WP7 music interface and I think it just got worse with my Lumia 920 WP8. They fixed things enough with groove but its to late at this point with WP10. Which is my Lumia 950 device.. I love using the WP UI in general, but the Lumia 950 has been buggy.

I'm done with Windows phones officially after this phone is discarded. MS like just didn't market their products well enough.. or they were just to late. The Zune HD should have been a successful product.. but they failed.

I have no idea which phone I am going to buy next... the shitty thing is I have sort of bought into the windows eco system with Movie purchases and music over the years. So if I change phone OS I will be losing the ability to access the purchases I have made over the last several years.

I like the looks of the Google Pixel as an eventual replacement of my Windows Phone. The base model is reasonable priced with some nice features. I'll probably say goodbye to my trusty WP around Xmas this year. Unless, MS comes up with some earth shattering announcement. The Microsoft 950 series look like nice phones for real cheap. But, I don't trust MS support for the product unless something changes between now and the end of the year.

So my mom is older and not very tech savy.

She now uses, likes and knows WP pretty well.

Her current 4.5 year old phone is near broken and needs replacement within a month or so. (microphone is inop. but can still talk via speakerphone)

A Lumia 650 would be great for her but......

The big question is, will WP be around for another ~10-15 years?

If in 10 years, WP is no more, she will have a hard time learning and figuring out Android.

Thoughts?

None will know. 10 to 15 years is so long that whatever she learns to use today is obsolete then anyways.

:yep:

The iPhone is only even 10 years old. Blackberry 10-15 years ago looked like it would rule the world forever. This is an odd thread.

Yeah, you both have good perspective points. I'll tell her to go with whatever she likes best.

There are many apps that available for other OS but not available for Window Phone. One of the most popular apps, Facebook Mess, doesn't support Window Phone 8.1 any more, and not all device that run Window Phone 8.1 can upgrade to Window 10 to use this app, and the story will continue with many other popular apps that Window Phone's users cannot get access to.

If you ever used MS maps before (there was a time both HERE and MS maps (powered by bing)) was available at the same time.
Its pretty much that except its powered by HERE instead of bing.

MS Maps is not without its issues. I am not sure about here+ I just use the WP10 Maps. My buddy got a new apartment and I typed in his address and it brought me to the middle of a graveyard. His Apartment was about a half mile away but I thought it was hilarious.

Its also caused me issues though, its good enough 95% of the time and it will always at least get me within seeing distance of my destination. But google maps is so much better.

I am disappointed with a lot of things MS has done since there Zune HD launch. I liked WP tile based OS and how smooth it felt but they just didn't put enough support over all into the apps to make it a smart decision. Groove music might be better now but when it first launched it was awful.. making a playlist was painful.

And a few apps thats all I care about luckily. So for now I am going to stick with my lumia 950.
