What is happening to Windows Phone?

Is it truly dead?

Not sure why no one wants them. The ones I've used I found great to navigate and use, love the tile home screen. Plus for anyone that works business, the Office integration is outstanding. Not to mention the smooth continuity between Surface tablet, WPhone and Win10 desktop now.

Is it the usual reason of 'no apps' why its not popular?

Is it a bad choice to buy one currently?

I personally wouldn't touch a Windows Phone with a 10ft pole at this point. The lack of apps is a major issue. My wife had a Nokia Lumia 1020, and the phone was great, but when she switched to Android she started to really realize what she was missing via the app store.

You can get all the Office stuff on Android and iOS. There's no killer app or feature that a Windows Phone has that iOS or Android doesn't have. Literally the only thing it has going for it is it's not Android or iOS, and the vast majority of people are quite happy with those two choices. Pair that with the fact Microsoft has completely bumbled the Lumia line since acquiring it, axing all the interesting phones and only releasing phones with already dated hardware and you see why it didn't take off. Microsoft was their own worst enemy.

Destroy, they are literally killing it off. I love the Lumia 640 I have. It's fast and stable. They are certainly a good buy if you only need a few common apps but if a healthy app store is what you require then you need to look elsewhere. If you are looking for one to try I can sell you my Lumia real cheap? I only bought it to play with directly from a MS sale. I think it's unlocked and was on AT&T last.

I don't use it because I am lazy and don't want to learn new things.

The big thing that MS got right is that they didn't allow OEM or carrier customisations. I wish the Android ecosystem would go in that direction, so that non-Nexus handsets would finally get timely updates

I don't even use the Facebook app on Android.
Is Instagram still a thing?

Ok, but with Win10/360 and it's app/media store, don't you think the whole Windows Universal platform will slowly get better; thus increase popularity of WPhone also.

Maybe not immediately but in a few years from now.

What is happening? The same thing that is happening to over a dozen versions of Windows CE, Windows Phone, Windows Mobile and KIN.... Left hanging.... Suckers!

Microsoft needs to adopt x86 in smart phones.

Is there something a Windows phone won't do besides have some obscure app that they don't have? Calls work fine, office apps work, email works, messaging works, exchange works, calendar works, browser works, etc....

Windows phone has those apps, what are you talking about? You can also use Facebook and Instagram through a browser, Heh...

Then you're doing it wrong. WP versions of those apps are pretty outdated or lack integration. It's not just those either, I only mentioned those because they're pretty common and popular apps for smartphone usage. WP's ecosystem is basically missing everything that makes smartphone usage fun and a significant chunk of apps that make them useful. No developer gives a crap about WP because of its insignificant marketshare, it's a vicious cycle.

What for? People don't want a full-OS PC on a 5" screen.

Sorry of someone already mentioned this (too lazy to read) but the Surface Phone is slated for a Q1 2017 release. Rumored specs are all over the place (Snapdragon 830 or even Kaby Lake with 6-8GB RAM) but if the project isn't scrapped I don't see Microsoft going with anything but top-tier hardware. Otherwise, it's truly the end of the line for Windows powered phones.

Oh I agree, it's end of the line but it's not going away for those that have them. They are still updating the platform.

Instagram through a browser does not work. You can view but can't comment, upload, or like photos afaik. I haven't looked at IG through a browser since it first came out though.

I've seen the WP version of Instagram. It's missing tons of stuff that has been out for ages on Android + IOS

Yet they still work....that was my point.
