The future of DCS World by Eagle Dynamics

Almost no difference, except you buy modules from steam and then steam takes a cut of Eagle Dynamics profits.

If I hadn't invested so much in the standalone version already, I would have went with Steam. Steam downloads blazing fast while the standalone DCS updater is a tad slow.

DCS updater used to be slow as ****, but they've done something recently where I can now get 10-20MB/s no problem.
I just bought a thrustmaster TWCS for my 7 year old son to go with the cheapy 2nd hand saitek whatever joystick and he's flying the A-10A in a simple mp mission I made for us to play together. Not on at the level of my warthog throttle of course but it's quite good for the price and the rudder paddle is quite a bonus.

I've not noticed a difference in the us. Still hit 7-10 megabytes a second with standalone.

I have a gigabit plan so I'm used to getting over 100 megabytes per second and Steam usually maxes out my bandwidth. ;) I downloaded the big DCS update last weekend. It was only a 10 gig download but it seemed like it took forever.

I see Steam has a bunch of modules on sale. I'm looking into Flaming Cliffs 3 but wanted opinions on it. My days of study sims are behind me so can this be played on lower settings to get in the air, lock and fire?

I have the F-15, Su-33, and Mig 29 modules from Flaming Cliffs as well as the full modules like the A-10, F-16 and F-18. The Flaming Cliff modules are somewhat simpler, but still be prepared to spend some time learning radar modes, binding a bunch of keys you'll need and views to just do some basic fighting. They are not Ace combat modules by any means where you push a button to lock and a button to shoot. You can still do a simplified cold start with multiple key press, just no cockpit switching. They are fun to fly and for the price, not a bad introduction. Still, don't just expect to hop in the plan and blow stuff up right away.

Flamming Cliffs 3 is a great purchase. It's still a proper sim just the controls are simplified. What it really means is a few hours tops of reaserch over sth arcade and a world of difference afterwards, ofc if you understand fighter jet combat and all.

A great way to check whether the study sim days are still behind you or not, is the BMS mod for Falcon 4. It's free and beautiful, all you need is a Falcon 4 copy ie from GoG.

2.7 just dropped. CLOUDS! SSAO, New prop effects, lighting improvements, water improvements...and my FPS actually INCREASED!

Absolutely incredible work!

I don't know exactly which patch did it but even before 2.7 performance had gotten a lot better than it was 9 months ago when I first tried the game.

The new clouds look great and even with most settings maxed out at 4k I'm getting around 80 fps even on the Syria map.

Granted that's in single player and just a quick free flight, but still impressive.

Thanks for the updates Silver_Dragon.
It's always good to see the progress as DCS continues to move forward though, for myself, the only upcoming module I'm waiting for is the dynamic campaign. It's been a long time coming but I think it will be a real game changer.

The Dynamic campaign has no a module, has a core feature, and actualy, continue on progress. The last develop update:

Thanks. I await it impatiently.
In the meantime though, I'm learning the F14. Not flown one since the days of Microprose and Fleet Defender.
