R9 380 or GTX 960

Shadowless

Deez Nuts
My gf is getting me a new video card for xmas. The budget is in the $200 range which means 4GB GTX 960 or 4GB R9 380. Which is my best bet? I've been having issues with GTA V with my 6870's on low, and a guy at one of my client's has said he's had similar issues with his R9 280x.

Those articles is of a factory OC'D after market cool 380 vs a reference 960.

Reference vs reference the 960 leads in performance just slightly with 100w less power usage. Same goes for aftermarket vs aftermarket.

I just noticed that. There isn't a single 960 available on NewEgg that is clocked as low as the 960 in the test.

That leads me to believe the 960 I'm looking at that is clocked at 152MHz higher may have closed the gap.

What about the 380X?

The 380x is equal to a 290x in performance so 380x > 960.

the xfx aftermarket used in the hardocp review had a whopping 20mhz oc vs a reference board. maybe a 1fps difference?
the 960 hard used had a boost clock of 1178mhz

looking at egg prices right now cheapest..
380 is $194
380x is $229
960 is $209

these are all aftermarket options, don't even see a reference blower for the amds and the nv blower is more expensive.

The 380X is simply going to be faster than a 960, OC'd or not. If you have to OC the card (sounds like your at least looking at it) to get the performance you want then maybe going up a notch might be better?

Nice take. I'd personally take a 390 over it, but I'm assuming you found a 970 closer to your budget? :D

No. My gf heard me curse because the 380x I wanted was out of stock and newegg still had it listed as In Stock so she just went "Just buy the next one up". So I told her the price difference and the response I got was "Yeah, and?" So after multiple times of questioning her she was starting to get annoyed with me so I ordered an eVGA GTX 970 ACX 2.0+. Paid $314 shipped.

I have no complaints regarding my many previous NVIDIA cards (Except my PNY Verto GeForce 2 MX400 because the ****ing fan just one day fell off the card for no reason). From what I was reading the 390 and 970 were more or less a wash. Besides, if I need more power, I'll just get another one in March for my bday

You know what's funny I read your 1st paragraph and thought you buy one and the GF can get you a 2nd for X-Mas. And then I read your 2nd paragraph.

That being said you'd have to be soooooooo nice to her for the next year if she SLI'd you.

haha. I wouldn't make her buy me the second one (in fact I'm pretty sure she wouldn't just on the basis of "What do you need another one for?" ), I would buy that on my own most likely with one of my quarterly bonuses or birthday money if I find I need it. In my defense my xmas game has been on point almost every year since we started going out; One year I got her an iphone and last year I got her a new laptop.

I choosed the 970 over 390 too because in many games the mins fps is higher than the 390..The power consumption is lower and the 970 was released in 2014.The 390 is a rebrand of a 290 that i feel kinda old tech if you buy a vga this year..If a tonga core was in the 390 i would have bought it.The 380x is nice but i wanted more performance especially if i want to keep the card for a while. The Fury was ok but is beyond my budget..
On the other hand AMD have some challenges with Fallout 4.Rainbow siege is an nvidia optimized game..Not sure about COD.

Good job Shadow. Moving up a notch in the food chain is always a better solution than than buying "almost good enough" and then trying to OC to get there. Can't go wrong with either the 970 or the 390.

If I would've gotten the 380 or 380x I had already planned on going Crossfire in March. I feel with the 970 I may not need to.
