Aliens: Fireteam

Did you ever play Alien Isolation?

That is exactly what you are describing.

I haven’t, oddly enough :p I will eventually. but to clarify a bit, I like the formula behind Colonial Marines. I just thought the implementation was garbage.

I essentially want the movie “Aliens”, but with no companions, or just the odd survivor here and there. No horde battles, and have the environment and audio provide as much, or more, tension as the visuals.

We'll have to wait to see how that newly announced Aliens single player game pans out then.

In the meantime, play Alien Isolation! Its really really good.

There was a fan made mod that vastly improved AI and game balance for Colonial Marines. Also, there's of course the famous simple .ini tweak to correct a spelling error that fixes the Xenomorph AI issues (which I believe was included in the fan mod).

I replayed the game in co-op couple years ago and it was actually much better with the fixes. Had a a lot of fun with it. If you only played it near release I'd recommend giving it another go with the mod. Its suggested to play on hardest difficulty, which makes the gameplay much more interesting and intense.

So the devs of Colonial Marines couldn't even be bother to release a "patch" to fix the spelling error that was causing so much trouble? Hell, they could have done it in about an hour, and they never bothered?

It was a long time ago but if you look it up there was a big controversy about that game when it launched. Had many issues and IIRC Gearbox Software was really dragging their feet about fixing anything.

I don't remember all the details but I remember it was a big cluster **** back then.

Sega and Gearbox actually got sued over that entire debacle. Sega settled, and I don’t know what happened with Gearbox since then.

Thanks for posting that link. Looks like it was Sega that was found more at fault since they were in control of the marketing, for false advertising.

It was such a mess. I don’t recall ever seeing that level or blowback for a publisher or dev before.

Sadly though, we still never got the game on par with what they marketed.

AVP 2000 and AVP2 are games that are at least 20 years and are better than this coop crap looking and playing game.

Alien Isolation was breathtaking.
Not sure what point you're trying to make in quoting that post of mine.

I really don't get the disdain for this game, it's not that bad. I think some of you guys were just expecting something different.

The best formula for Aliens games has been proven time and time again to be single player focused survival horror.

There is a reason why the marine campaigns in AVP games are better received than the Alien or Predator campaigns and why Alien Isolation is also such a great game. Squad based games or Coop in the Aliens universe gets mostly trashed because the element of horror and survival is sorely lacking.

Right now, I am playing the Marine campaign in the original Alien Vs Predator game from 1999 and it is terrifying, dark and challenging.

I have a lot of fond memories of that game

I think it’s simple preference for a given game structure though. I prefer what you seem to - see my thoughts above, but “terrifying, dark and challenging” are what I just love.

There’s also a place for a good co-op shooter in this universe though. Fighting through these environments with a solid team of friends could be an amazing experience. Now, I only have one friend :p but I never bought the game once I found out it was essentially built for co-op.

I was pretty disappointed, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. Just not a good fit for me right now.

Yeah Fireteam Elite is just a different formula. If you don't like it doesn't mean it's garbage, just not what you're looking for in an Aliens game.

Personally my bros and i are having a blast with it, and yeah at times it is dark and terrifying. It's not just all out action. It has a fair share of tension and scares too. Don't be so mad at it, just go play what you want.

I'm still waiting for a good Marine Aliens game.

Isolation was great.

Yep - I do wish the single player was on par with the co-op, but I don’t ever remember it being marketed for a SP game.

Besides, we really do need some solid co-op shooters imo. Why not an Aliens related one? :)

Yep. Like I said earlier I would be happy to pay above market value for the right one. Even an AVP 1999 remake with Unreal 5 or something…I would be in hog heaven lol.

It was not marketed as a single player game. To me its always been obviously a co-op game. Its a game built upon an existing co-op campaign shooter formula, similar to games like World War Z, Zombie Army, Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood, Vermintide, and so on. They just took that same formula and applied it to the Aliens franchise.

IMO, this game is a solid co-op Aliens game. It ticks all the boxes of this co-op genre and has all the trimmings of the Aliens license. Also, you CAN play it single player if you want. Only thing that might turn people off is the fact its mission based, rather than a flowing narrative like AvP, or Colonial Marines was, and you will have 2 NPCs along with you.

If the game ever goes really cheap and you have a couple friends to play it with I'd say give it a chance. It really is a lot of fun with friends.

You know me T. I have no friends

LoL, both my brother and my daughter want to get back into gaming soon - So I’ll keep this on the front burner as an option.
