Aliens: Fireteam

I plan to eventually pick this game up, but I feel they made a big mistake by having max 3 player co-op. That is simply an odd number since L4D basically established the co-op FPS genre with four players. If you've got a team together for all the other games in the genre now suddenly someone has to sit out. From that standpoint it's simply a terrible design decision.

Maybe if they also allowed you to dress in women's clothing?

I do agree with this. Thought it was an odd choice to limit it to 3 players.

Luckily it works out perfect for my co-op group though since we are 3. In most games like this we're usually short 1 person.

Had to elaborate why I didn't like it though, which I did based on the limited time I played.
I get that. Your criticisms just sounded a little disingenuous.

It's very obvious the game is meant for co-op, not sure how you could have missed that and went ahead with a purchase. But even still the game is fine for single player too.

Performance is excellent as well. Not sure how you could be having framerate issues with your system.

Game said single player and some reviews said the single player was fun. I played, found it un-fun. Left4dead did it better and that game is over 10 years old now. I didn't investigate the performance issues, I just refunded.

OK so then you did see that it supports single player. You originally said it has no single player, and used that as one of your reasons to refund.

I'm not trying to harp on you so I'll stop. Its fine if you didn't find the game fun. Just the reasons you stated as to why didn't make sense initially.

IMO, if you like portraying a colonial marine from Aliens this game does a really good job of putting you in those shoes. There certainly hasn't been a game yet to do that this well. Its what I always hoped for with Aliens: Colonial Marines from 2013, but that game was a real mess when it launched and definitely over promised. I will say the one thing that old game did better was give a stronger narrative based gameplay. Aliens Fireteam is more mission and co-op based, but it does have a story attached to it as well. I'm still early into it, but I can already see it getting fleshed out.

Well I clearly stated; (found it's practically multi only). So obviously I didn't say it had no single player, just practically none.

prac·ti·cal·ly

virtually; almost.
"the place was practically empty"

Some games are falsely advertised on steam as single/multiplayer. This was technically single player capable, but wasn't single player. I considered this false advertisement. It also insinuates the bots that accompany you have are nerfed based on skill setting...wtf? So if I choose a harder skill setting, the bots will become useless? Why not just make the enemies harder? If I made the skill level harder, should I also look for useless real human team mates to maintain the difficulty?

I was looking for a game that had a Gears flavor, but this was not even close (sometimes hard to tell how it feels until you play it). I clearly am not the only one that had issues with the game as it's player count has dwindled from a high of 15k down to just a smidge above 400 players. For a game that's only been out a year, that is terrible.

Maybe I would have given it a longer look if I had somebody to play it with consistently, but just playing with randos online or bots in single player is not my cup of tea.

If you are having fun with the game great enjoy your purchase, but from what I've seen all the criticism the game received over the year was well founded.

As a side note, this is the first game I've refunded in over 5 years.

OK man that's all valid personal criticism.

Only thing is i still just don't really agree on your claim of false advertising. I think its clear that its billed as a co-op game primarily, with the option to play alone with bots. Same as WWZ, L4D, Back 4 Blood, etc.

Looking forward to this now if only because of the engine:

Aliens Single-Player Unreal Engine 5 Adventure Announced for PC, Console, and VR

In space, nobody can hear you scream, but apparently, they can hear you game. There’s been a spate of Alien games released or announced recently, including Aliens: Fireteam Elite and the upcoming Aliens: Dark Descent, and now another game has been added to the list. While the game doesn’t have a specific title yet, 20th Century Games has announced a new Unreal-Engine-5-powered single-player Aliens adventure is on the way.

Sounds like that one might be more up your alley.

We'll see.

I was very interested in Colonial Marines...until I read that the Alien AI was retarded and the aliens would often just...freeze. Run at you and then stop, for no reason making them little more than target practice. Or sometimes they'd get stuck on walls.

I did read a mod supposedly fixed it, but bah...I shouldn't have to mod a game to make it playable.

Colonial Marines was such a disappointment. I would actually pay above market value for a Good single player Aliens experience. Before I turn 70 please lol.

There was a fan made mod that vastly improved AI and game balance for Colonial Marines. Also, there's of course the famous simple .ini tweak to correct a spelling error that fixes the Xenomorph AI issues (which I believe was included in the fan mod).

I replayed the game in co-op couple years ago and it was actually much better with the fixes. Had a a lot of fun with it. If you only played it near release I'd recommend giving it another go with the mod. Its suggested to play on hardest difficulty, which makes the gameplay much more interesting and intense.

Thanks Meteor - I did play with the fix after it came out and it was better in subtle ways, but still not the experience I want. I need dark, only a little lighting is ok, and fewer but much smarter and more deadly aliens, hiding places lol, and no AI companions.
And the more I don’t know where or when the next attack is coming, the better.

Did you ever play Alien Isolation?

That is exactly what you are describing.
