Windows 10

1. can you guys tell me or link me to articles about anything I need to know before upgrading from win 7 to win 10?
2. any tips about what to setup after upgrading?
3. please link me guides to disable win 10 auto updates?
4. what's the difference between win 10 home and pro?
5. what's gonna happen to all my apps? like for example my mpc-be + madvr renderer, will I need to install the win 10 version or can they just work?

please help me, I'm somewhat paranoid toward win 10 :D
2. Make sure the drivers are updated. Start with Mobo stuff first. I manually use the device manager to do all it.
3. I use the Group Policy editor included with Pro to change updates to notify to download. I then disable the nagging "MusNotification.exe" that pop-up after a week if you download the updates. Maybe there are tools that disable auto updates.

The weather live tile on the start menu stopped updating for me. It seems to be broken in LARGE size, other sizes work fine

Wish the ENG input icon would permanently disable, I can turn it off but it comes right back sooner or later.

I also don't like how Show desktop button does not work when the start menu is open.

Also, the copy and replace dialogue is markedly worse in 10. In 7 it was near perfect, it would show the dates of each file first up and you could copy but keep both files. With 10 you need to open another dialogue and it's not quite as user friendly.

Aaaand it just got even better. Apparently Microsoft decided that Windows should now automatically plunk Candy Crush and such into my list of programs all by itself by default.

Seriously, WTF? It's bad enough that this click bait is all over the internet as "personalized suggestions", but to just go ahead and automatically put it on my Start menu? Really?

Replace the start menu with classic shell or similar and don't worry about it.

I am running i7 5930k 6 core + 32gb of RAM and Nvidia 1080 under Windows 7 x64 and games and apps run better than on Windows 10. I cannot believe you people deal with that pile of **** called Windows 10. It has 0 improvements over Win7 and much more to lose.

what's the overall current status of windows 10? currently running windows 7 ultimate, but am interested in some hardware that requires 10 (razer stargazer cam). ultimately i'm asking about overall compatibility? thanks :D

I don't know about the other guys, but there are a few things to watch for as far as compatibility goes. I've found that there are a bunch of older and/or cheaper USB card readers and hubs that use older chipsets that don't seem to work under Windows 10 unless the manufacturer provides a firmware update for them (unlikely). I have some USB IDE/SATA adapters that I use for data recovery and hardware testing that work well, but on some older (very older) hard drives they are hit and miss as to whether they will pick up, whereas they worked in Windows 7.

In my experience, there are some software compatibility issues sprinkled about here and there, but it's really with very old software that already had issues with Windows 7.

As well, if you have NVidia graphics card(s) and still want to play Fallout 3/New Vegas, the drivers for the Windows 10 anniversary update will no longer work (instant crash to desktop on load or starting a new game). The latest driver from before the anniversary update will work just fine (and still supports Vulkan for playing Doom). My understanding is that Microsoft changed the API somewhat to require the driver report back capabilities a bit differently, which breaks compatibility (or so goes my third hand information). I don't know if this is an issue with AMD graphics drivers or not as I don't have one installed, and I'm not about to tear my system apart to test it.

I haven't had any real compatibility problems. Not sure overall I'm all that thrilled with the forced updates and other things along those lines, but I'll live with it... :bleh:

Be sure if you make the switch to just do a full reinstall. Doing an upgrade has mixed results.

How do I disable this windows keep on ringing home... DAMMIT!
If it weren't for Forza and Gears, I wouldn't even be turning the damn thing on. I still can't figure out, how to stop it from using my internet without permission. How do I disable onedrive pop up if I don't have a onedrive account? How do I uninstall Skype? How do I uninstall all the apps that keep asking for updates everytime I turn "on" store?

Seriously, this windows is so crap!

For the automagically reinstalling apps (Candy Crush and so on), I did this and turned off "Occasionally show suggestions in Start" in Settings>Personalization>Start. That seems to have stopped that whole stupid thing.

I just now right clicked on the OneDrive cloud and set it up not to start when Windows starts...so we'll see on that. Before that, I just unassociated my PC from OneDrive so the app would run, but not do anything.

As for the whole "phone home" thing that is Windows 10, there's a bajillion security and privacy settings I've seen on the web, some of which I've disabled/enabled kind of randomly. I'm sure there's a detailed writeup somewhere.

KB3194496 has really been a pain. So far, only one of four have been able to successfully install this update without having to go through the mediacreationtool workaround. Failures are always the same - goes through the process, only to end w/ a generic unable to install / rolling back message. Well done, MS.

Yep, same here.

Had to turn off some of the update options because it keeps trying to install... and fail.

/facepalm

How do you not have a fix for this Microsoft?

Yep.

And neither of my systems that are on Win 10 at home have 3'rd party AV installed.

The devices are almost stock, except for a few games/etc.

The updating format is horrible. It just one big fail where as on the previous windows you could install some of the updates.

Run the MediaCreationTool, and select "Upgrade This PC Now". Choose "Keep my files, settings, apps".

This process has worked on all four machines that were failing the update.
