Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

I reinstalled windows 10 fall update because it messed up my administrative rights. But must admit my pc now is the best it's ever been, games are noticeably faster and the graphics in games seem better even the sound is beefier lol sounds like an exaggeration but it really isn't.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that. It's a beautiful OS now, and I can't believe I'm saying that about Windows.

Gave it a go a few days ago and the experience wasn't exactly pleasant. Start button would not work unless I logged out and back in again and gaming performance actually went down. This PC has been upgraded since RTM (november update, anniversary update, both creators updates), and things were starting to break down so I did a fresh install.

Funny, the start menu was working fine until I installed drivers, then it stopped working again ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Gaming performance was still bad, testing on the working 385.69 and latest 388.31. GPU clocks weren't switching to 3D speeds when needed and FPS drops were occurring very frequently.

Sorry, but if I can't use gsync and have proper FPS in borderless window, I don't need it.

I gave up and went back to 1607 and everything is fine again. I'll try it again once MS releases some patches and nvidia fixes gsync.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Edge was garbage as usual, would freeze everytime I clicked on a link

Sorry to hear that, it does have its quirks. before i re-installed clean (Which was a real pain, but has done wonders.) I had major administrator rights problems, Metro apps wouldn't even appear and Gaming performance was worse even though everyone seemed to be raving about the improvements.

It does sound like all patch and driver problems. I've been fortunate I guess, my gaming laptop and my new 2 in 1 run flawlessly - even the anemic little mx150 in my 2 in 1 lol.

Edge has been so smooth and fast for me I'm almost considering dumping FF for it - and the markup feature is just plain sweet and useful as well.

If you've ever read any of my past rants about/against MS and Windows, the above post might mean a bit more :p Hated > nay....HATED windows with a passion...

Yeah, don't know what the deal is. Running on 1607 has been rock solid since the install, no weird quirks to speak of, still running 385.69.

The PC I built for work (BYOD office) hasn't had any issues with the FCU upgrade that I can tell, all I use on it is my dev tools, code editors, node, java, and browsers. Haven't tried any gaming on it yet, it has a 6600k and GTX 980 :D

Okay, so not really feeling this latest version. Been running it since around mid-October and I've already had two random BSODs and just yesterday morning I woke up to find that the monitor was blank, but not asleep (like I had a blank screensaver running, which I didn't). Reset the PC and the only errors I could see in the event viewer were related to me not shutting down cleanly. Also, it decided to only copy about half the files that it was supposed to be copying at some point after I went to sleep.

Not sure if it's the OS or hardware at this point, as it's about 75% new stuff (CPU, MB, RAM, and most of the drives), though 1709 is feeling kinda like it needs a little more time in the oven. Really hate this whole "twice-a-year" upgrade cadence that MS is pushing at this point... otherwise I'd still be hanging onto 1607 for dear life.

Odd thing I also have had two random bluescreens since the update, I looked at your system specs and I have the SB ZX, a 980TI and the same power supply as you but I am running a Ryzen 1800X. I have not checked in a few weeks but will tonight for updated drivers for the Sound Blaster zx and the video card drivers.

Don't think there is an updated driver for the Z series (the last one I'm seeing is from March 2017). There have been at least two NV driver updates in the last few weeks, though.

I went a little nuts during Black Friday and picked up a couple more SSDs, along with an M.2, so I'm due to be reinstalling in the next few days anyway. The first BSOD I saw happened right after my screen went black and came back up (a la TDR), and then Windows crashed hard when I went to check the event viewer. Didn't save a dump file for some reason so I couldn't really troubleshoot it, but I seem to recall seeing that explorer.exe had recovered right around the same time.

The second one happened while browsing with Firefox, which seemed really odd. The screen itself seemed to indicate that the NV driver was to blame, but the dump file just pointed to ntoskrnl.exe. I know that Kaspersky was implicated in causing some BSODs under 1709 recently, but I don't use it, so I have no idea whatsoever on that one.

I'm just hoping I'm done with them after the reinstall. I run a pretty tight ship as far as my PC goes, so I'm not really accustomed to seeing BSODs... it's all a little disconcerting to be perfectly honest, especially since I know that even if I go back to an earlier version, I'm still gonna get forced back onto the FCU at some point.

Well updating to the latest corsair link seems to have resolved the error on one of my USB ports, i did update the software right after going to 1709 FCU but there was a newer version out. Thanks for the heads up. Both my BS's happened while in Chrome and Outlook. No dump files either, I guess Windows never knew what hit it :)

I turned off TDR checking in Windows which helped, and like you I keep my pc tight and up to date. Its been some time since the last one so I am hoping either a Windows update or a driver update resolved the issue.

Hey just a fyi Ash vs the evil dead just came to Netflix both seasons.

Anyone else have weirdness with windows not behaving.

Like I double click a zip file it opens in 7zip and I use the mouse to highlight the folders and files in the zip and instead it shoots the mouse cursor down to the bottom right of my monitor outside of the 7zip window.

Or I was just trying to poke Steam and every time I tried to click on one of my games it would instead minimize the window.

EDIT:
Of course after changing nothing and coming here to ask around it decides it wants to work properly and not be a problem anymore...:|

Let's see how long this lasts...
Lies this is still happening !_!

Fingers crossed. I was actually missing the latest update when I got the first BSOD because apparently when you check the box to defer feature updates in 1709, it goes ahead blocks all the quality (i.e. cumulative) updates for you, too... because who in their right mind wants those, right? After figuring that one out and getting the latest update, all seemed well until the second BSOD popped about a week and a half ago. But I'm still hoping that a windows update sorts it all out.

And thanks for the heads-up on AvED. Don't have Starz so I've been missing out this whole time. I've often wondered if anyone ever noticed the username and got the reference... glad to run across someone who actually did.

Now yours just sounds weird, Sey. But I think I'd prefer weird happenings being afoot to outright crashes.

:yep:;)*

Tru dat.

It's weird if I click the show desktop button twice things behave normally. Basically minimize every thing and bring it back up with the second click.

Have you tried grabbing yer PC and shaking the snot outta it? I think that's gonna be my next troubleshooting step... might be able to knock a few gremlins and/or gnomes loose without having to call an exorcist.

Speaking of which, I just got the weird blank screen thing that I mentioned a few posts back on a fresh install with a different monitor. Apart from what comes with Windows, no extra drivers were installed except for Intel chipset/iRST and Samsung NVMe. So that's definitely a Windows issue.

Yep I even mashed my penis into it and no dice.

For your issue make sure windows isnt downloading drivers behind your back and installing them whenever the **** it feels like it. Had that happen to a friend while he was gaming :\

Nah, the first go round windows update was disabled (with drivers excluded) via group policy, and the second one happened while the PC was sitting on the kitchen counter after I'd just finished putting it all back together, without any sort of internet connection.

Had almost no issues with 1607, but I skipped over 1703 because I didn't want to upgrade. At this point I figure 1709 is just punishing me for refusing to fall in line last time, and I'm starting to come to terms with the fact that it's just gonna have issues no matter what.

Only one option..

There are a lot of driver problems with 1709, it is almost like MS kept hardware venders in the dark, specially sound hardware. (Could also be related to MS addition of surround sound and such). Anyhow a lot of venders are still working on proper drivers.

If audio drivers turn out to be the culprit, then users like me are pretty much SOL. The latest driver that Creative pushed out for the Z-series actually came out about a month before 1703 saw general release.

That said, the card seems to work fine for me. But who knows what potential conflicts are going on behind the scenes that might be causing issues like the random blue screens?

I stand by my earlier assertion that 1709 is just not ready for primetime... and shame on MS for forcing massive changes just for the sake of making those changes. Stability and reliability should be first and foremost-- fancy new "features" be damned.

So I guess my PC is sick or something. The FCU might not be entirely stable, but I'm starting to see more and more weird things going on, and I'm starting to suspect that it's not entirely the OS' fault.

Ran pretty great for the first week after reinstalling from scratch, but it's gotten to the point that I'm terrified to leave it running overnight for fear of what I'll wake up to in the morning... BSODs, TDRs, etc. Something's definitely not right. It could be just drivers, but it feels like there's something else at work here, and I'm really tired of fussing and fretting over it.

Really looking hard at scrapping it all and going the 8700K route like I originally planned, now that you can actually find them. In the end it might end up being the video card, but I've quickly been growing more and more dissatisfied with X299 here in the last couple of weeks, so it's doubtful that I'd stay on this platform for much longer anyway.

Anybody want a gently used 7820X, X299 board, and/or a quad set of Dominators? I'll cut you a deal. ;)
