Has anyone else cancelled their Win10 reservation?

If so, why?

I'm making a separate thread so the replies don't get lost in the main thread, and I'm hoping for a mature and productive discussion about my reasons below.

PLEASE refrain from flaming or generic, non-constructive replies. If someone posts something in error, please provide a reliable source in your reply as to why it's not correct.

My reasons for cancelling are based largely around the fact that I don't like the direction MS is pushing with the new OS regarding data collection and loss of certain choices, and the fact that I have a perfectly running Win8.1 installation makes me question whether an "upgrade" is worth it.

1. Forced driver updates. Yes, that can be tweaked, but I shouldn't have to. It isn't MS's place to dictate which drivers I run.

2. Cloud services integration. Much more tightly interwoven with the main OS. Again, it can be disabled and removed, but it requires jumping through several hoops to do so.

3. This excerpt from the ToS.

Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.

Yes, it can be opted out of at the expense of certain functionality, but I'm not comfortable with MS retaining whatever personal data they choose to collect to begin with. To boil much of it down, MS is going further and further down that road that collects as much info as possible about absolutely everything it can regarding what we do on the web, between the cloud, Cortana and browser tracking, and that shouldn't be supported imo.

Here's a couple of decent reads on the subject of privacy and win10.

If any of this is incorrect, please respond with factual sources and not cries of "FUD!!"

I really wanted to like this OS, but I value my privacy a lot, and can't support an OS built by a company that's moving to compromise it.

Thanks for reading.

I think what it comes down to is if the law or subpoena requires information then MS is required by that law to hand it over or collect data. Yes it is very vague though so if somebody challenged it I imagine the wording could get changed.

But to answer yes, Windows 10 seems to be riding that slippery slope.

You're likely right, but yes, that slope is looking slippery and I just don't want to get on it yet.

Does that make me sound like a tin foil hatter type? :p

Privacy is a huge concern now days so I wouldn't call it tin foil hat level! :)

We can thank the NSA and our government for that...

I just don't have a lot on my home computer that would be of interest to anybody I guess. :p

Same here, except for thieves.

I can understand the whole LE scenario, even if I don't like the loss of privacy, but my shopping/browsing/email habits are my own and no one elses.

MS does NOT need to know the contents of hot email exchanges between my wife and I.

:manches: :p

I cancelled my reservation, but only because I ended up getting a free retail copy from work that I will install. Just saves me the extra step of upgrading then doing a clean install. I upgraded my wife's laptop though.

As for the privacy stuff, yeah it sucks but honestly its simply the way things are going now with everything and I simply don't have the time or energy to get all up in arms about it. I have little to hide anyways, which I know is not the right way of thinking but whatever. I will just try to avoid using and disable any data mining services as much as possible.

I am actually more interested in hearing how Windows update is behaving for them now that they cancelled their reservation. Every day mine has still been trying to D/L the upgrade files, but failing to install them since I uninstalled and hid the KB3035583 update. I found another update related to the upgrade last night that I also uninstalled, so hopefully that did the trick.

I'm just waiting for someone to break into Windows Update and manage to slip in malware.

With automated forced installs, it's going to be party time.

Disabling it in the task scheduler + uninstalling it seems to have worked for me. That may be what you need to do. I uninstalled first, but it was still showing as a scheduled task after that.

You know, I didn't even think about that. Has windows update ever been compromised before?

Hmm, I forgot about the task scheduler.

If it comes back I will check there, thanks.

I cancelled it on my HP Envy 17. AMD and HP have done such a lousy job with "Switchable Graphics" that I don't expect it to work. Switchable graphics was a good idea in theory, but when your PC maker and the Graphics manufacturer can't seem to find a way to update drivers and keep a machine up to date with the delivered OS (Windows 7), then how can I expect them to update for Windows 10. I was never able to upgrade to Win 8 / 8.1 because of this. Have to wonder...

I did the upgrade on my Dell Venue Pro 11, to see how it would work out. After reading all the tweaks and taking care of 99% of them...It's OK. Same "privacy" restrictions as Windows 8 / 8.1.

Drivers not being updated properly is one of my biggest concerns. Win7 to Win8 was a nightmare for me on my Asus laptop, and with 8.1 running perfectly on my MSI I have to wonder if it's even worth trying.

I so want to find good reasons to try 10, but not at the cost of a lot of frustration and lack of privacy.

Yup, uninstalling it worked for me. I checked updates right afterwards and it was back. I hid the update and all is well!

The KB3035583 update? Killing that one wasn't enough for me. Each day after it kept downloading the Windows 10 upgrade files, but "failing" to install.

I ended up finding another related update and uninstalled it, then it stopped. Can't remember which update it was though.

I cancelled the reservation first, uninstalled that one update next, then killed the task. Subsequent reboots show no sign of it now. I think killing that task stopped it completely.

Yeah, apparently removing the Get Windows 10 app is inconsistent across different users.

Anyways no matter, will be nuking this Windows 7 install soon. Maybe tonight.

Yup...just uninstalled, rebooted and hid the update when it returned.
