Windows Phone is dead. Long live Windows Phone.

they might transition towards windows10 for ARM if they continue to make any effort to keep their phone business alive since windows 10 and windows 10M are still pretty drastically different.....

But I don't see them doing anything about it. Once they switched CEO's they pretty much stopped caring about their own mobile platform, and everyone saw that and didn't bother with it either.

Yeah I would say MS has given up on the market. To be honest though I am actually liking my Lumia 950 synced up with the cloud.. its just so easy to use with my windows 10 PC. I am sure I can do it with another phone too but MS has definitely made some of the W10 apps much better finally.

I still have issues with Maps.. Its actually dangerous driving through Boston with my phones GPS. And if you know what driving in Boston is like... its like a giant 1 way city.

Groove Music finally got a nice update I can finally use it and its pretty straightforward now.

MS doesn't seem to appeal to the younger audience anymore.. Xbox is not cool and apparently if you make over 100,000 dollars a year your more likely to buy a macbook.. according to the chinese kid on CNET.

If MS's whole x86 on ARM thing really pans out.... bah I don't know. MS always seems so close to the idea of one platform for everything.

I don't get it, is there a difference between Window Phone 10 and Windows 10 Mobile?

Aside from obvious ARM vs x86, it still seems like everything developed for Win10 is still developed separately from Win10M. ever notice how Win10 gets any and all updates at whatever times they get it, while Win10M gets theirs at completely different times and having completely different updates? (Win10 apps are also different apps than the equivalent win10M apps. And the desktop store gets the app updates before the mobile store if it gets it at all)

Win10M is almost completely different than Win10 underneath the UI.

Wow. I didn't expect to hear like that...I still have a Lumia 920 in the drawer and yes, it was still working, but would be nice if major update OS.

I like my windows phone (running latest version of windows mobile 10). Sue me.

I lucked out too, getting one of the last cheap ($30) Lumia 640s. It works, email, navigation, calls, text, comic reading, book reading, netflix, hulu.. stuff.

Still got my stupid lumia 635 lying around. Its my car navigation/music and my gym reader.

Microsoft failed hard by ignoring this market in the mid 2000s and a decent phone with a silky smooth OS is taken out to pasture. :(

That's the consensus for folks like me Jk. Microsoft dropped the ball with their non-coherent strategy. They have some amazing products and the OS itself was excellent. The 920 still, in one device, has more useful features than almost any other phone out there, albeit with older and slower technology.

Lack of app support, dropping support for devices randomly, inconsistent and arbitrary roadmap planning, literally dropping support wholesale after saying they were going to do something... not a good look.

If only someone had stood up and project managed this better and gotten executive buy-in for a sold long term vision.

MS has made some poor choices.. there marketing was absolutely terrible from like 2009-2014 when trying to sell us mobile devices. There phones and Zunes just bad marketing. The Zune HD was an awesome device. Easy to use, OLED screen long battery life great sound.. beautiful design.. and it flopped.

The only decent product that MS has come out with besides there Xbox brand is the Surface line up. And I have no idea how well its doing. They gave the NFL over 300 million dollars it should have made some headway into the market. And then the awful Xbox 1 launch.. forced Kinect and under powered hardware.. They basically gave Sony all of there market share they earned with the 360.

I have a Surface, great device (Windows Hello is fantastic  ) and I have an Xbox One S with Kinect. I don't use it for gaming, literally only media and the Kinect is great for that.

But Microsoft has done a rubbish job with marketing and with forcing some stuff down people's throats. Some recent changes over the past year or two are welcome. Hopefully more consumer friendly stuff will keep flowing, but they need better planning. They are almost as bad as Google when it comes to letting great products and ideas flounder and die.

I have a Surface Pro still going strong, and of course Windows 7 8 and 10 gaming PC's. I have had 4 Windows Phones. Samsung Focus WP7, Samsung Focus S, WP7, Lumia 920 WP 8 8.1 and WP10 with the Lumia 950. I also had the Zune and the Zune HD. Multple 360's and I even bought the Xbox One with Kinect. I supported MS because I liked there products. But the Xbox 1 is a failure in my eyes... as far as games go and the under powered hardware. So I gave up on that for now.

But I like Windows 10 alot even though its spying on me. But I guess we can say that about every mobile .. hell every electronic device at this point. Anything that has a camera or a mic somewhere on it.

Not to get off track I haven't used Windows hello yet, no real need. I am going to have to switch over to a google powered phone. MS is not giving me an option to upgrade to a new Win 10 phone. Hopefully I get another year out of the Lumia 950.

MS moving on from Ballmer hurt their smartphone ambitions drastically. One of the first things Nadella did was drop McLaren, which sounded like it was going to be an amazing phone. After that it was all downhill, they basically frittered away the Nokia acquisition.

Xbox One S does not support HDMI-CEC so your assessment on it being great for media is wrong. Pretty much every other HDMI device on the planet supports HDMI-CEC. So for Microsoft to create the Xbox One primarily as a media device then leave out HDMI-CEC shows how incompetent they are. I can use my TV remote to control my Denon receiver, Apple TV, Samsung UHD player or Roku through my HDMI interface. My Xbox One S... well let me go grab my Microsoft controller for this finely tuned media powerhouse. Marketing is the least of their worries.

My assessment is based on my needs. I have a 4K tele, an Nvidia Shield, and my Xbox One S :)

If I want to watch something, I just tell Cortana to turn on, she turns on the Xbox and all connected devices needed and I'm good to go.

I have a single remote I use for my tele, which is the way I control volume. Yes, it is not as connected as my Shield, for example, but I literally don't have to do jack all outside of volume control with the Xbox One S, thanks to voice control, which for me is a massive win.

As such, thanks to the ease of use and the voice controls, it is superior for me to other offerings. YMMV. HDMI-CEC is not a big deal for me, but I understand it can be for others as your post clearly demonstrates.

Whenever my Shield picks up commands without requiring me to push a button, it will become my default media device instead.
