What's the best driving/racing game for the PC?

((??M???))

New member
The title says it all. I want to try something new and I have never bought a racing/driving game for the PC. I loved Gran Turismo on the playstation, but sadly, no GT for the PC. I've played all of the NFS games and I liked them all except for Porsche Unleashed (no variety).

Requirements
Has to look good (graphics)
Has to be able to play over Lan
Has to work with the Radeon

So what are your suggestions?

i say wait till the gts3 or whatever the latest one comes to the pc... that should be sweet....

gts3?..... racing game?.. er.

I used to like the Nascar series.. back in DOS days.. but it got
old.. fast. It gave no entertainment for me, and all I did after a
while was cause accidents.

I want them to make another TOCA game.
I love GT racing, especially British Touring..

Codemasters working on a new Toca version!! might be great... Try out
Rally Trophy!!! Great game...

No racing game collection is complete without Road Rash. Most racing games are boring (IE racing around a oval track, lap after lap). With Road Rash at least you get to beat on your fellow racers with a baseball bat.

It's old so it can be bought cheap.

The entire NFS series rocks! The Superbike series from EA isn't bad either, if you like some good European cycling. Very accurate rendering of the bikes, speed, and everything. Whiplash was fun as an entertainment game a few years back, so if you can find it today I'd be shocked. However if you do, it'll be crazy cheap.

this might sound kind of crazy, but my favorite is still

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit

I don't know why, but I dont find the other NFS versions to be nearly as fun. I must have a thousand different added cars for it, and I run the game beautifully in XP using GLIDE mode with my Dual Voodoo2's ;)

NFS3 and NFS2:SE baby

NFS3 and NFS2:SE baby

You're not crazy, Need for Speed 3 was incredible. High Stakes was a downgrade.

Actually, my absolute favourite is Need for Speed II:SE. It has horrible D3D support, but you actually could drive cars that you would probably never ever see on the road - the exotic of the exotic, like the Nazca, the McLaren F1, and the Ford GT concept car (which inspired the Cougar). The cheapest car in the lot still cost $100k. Compare that to NFS4 with their Firebirds and Camaros. The tracks were great too - why all the tracks in NFS now are boring green hills?

Back on topic, Grand Theft Auto 3 will be coming to PC in a couple months (with a multiplayer mode too!). While not exactly a "racing" game, it will be rather entertaining.

Oops...I forgot one.

Oops...I forgot one.

I don't know HOW I forgot this one, but it's a MUST add to any driving list. For anyone gaming in the early to mid-90s, you had to have Gran Prix II. Best sim racing I EVER played. Captivating, hard as crap with all Driver Aids off, and fun too! I still have mine, even though I very rarely play it at all. But every once and a while, I install it for nostalgia.
With numerous downloadable cars, paint jobs, track and car advertising, preset race configurations, etc, this game will live on for quite a while.
GP3 came out a few years back, but I never bought it.

Gran Prix II live on!!

Best GT Racing Sim & RE: NFS PU

Best GT Racing Sim & RE: NFS PU

Hello All,

First I wanted to comment on NFS Porsche Unleashed being too limited/not enough variety or boring. If you don't like career mode and play it just as it comes out of the box you would be right about it getting dull. But you will love the variety when you check out the fansites for the game on the web and see the literally hundreds of cars you can download ranging from ultra fast to retro. And there are tracks, unofficial patches, and other fun mods. And of course the cheat code to unlock all the cars and tracks. One last note on this game, the graphics rock and run silky smooth on my 8500. Only gripe about this game that may be legit for some is that it is way arcade, and not very realistic compared to other top rated simulators. Some add on mods can help, but the physics are all arcade style period.

I think I have discovered the best racing sim and the most challenging just this week! I have always avoided F1 2001 due to the feedback on the physics on the web, but then I learned the one new feature of 2001 over 2000 that is very key... EA opened the game to the mod community in a huge way and there is a dedicated GT mod team that has produced what maybe the finest GT racer I have ever played. Its called: FIA GT2 MOD. It is in a word breathtaking. But read someone's opinion who really knows what he is talking about (plus lots of screenies) at http://www.simbin.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c8a06690b5fffff;act=ST;f=20;t=35 , or just checkout www.simbin.com in general. The amazing thing is that this free mod is actually way better than the F1 product that EA is selling with 2001. Better physics, sounds, graphics, smoothness, everything, plus... More super-exotic GT cars than you can shake a fist at... And you can get F1 2001 at Best Buy for like 20 bucks. Oh, and if you do download the FIA GT Mod, make sure you download some extra tracks, Monza at Dusk in Italy is particularly nice. Check it out!

Ive got to agree with mystik, this mod looks amazing. But where can i get it? i've lloed everywhere. is there any chance you could post a link. cheers

How to Download F1 2001 FIA GT Mod V2

How to Download F1 2001 FIA GT Mod V2

Well now that I have you all salivating over this amazing mod, I have to admit it is a bit hard to figure out how to download. It is actually hidden in the forums on www.simbin.com in its own special section. The trick is you have to be a forum member to download it (free, just need an email addy), or even see the download place. Read all about how to get it here: http://www.simbin.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?s=3c9165db1fe8ffff;act=ST;f=27;t=30

If you are still confused let me know, I would hate for you to miss out! This game is a blast, gotta go for now--so I can drive some more!!!

Oh and there is already a patch for the mod, make sure you get that. And read the readme!!! Just to make sure you understand how to tweak the game to ensure it runs smoothly. The biggest thing seems to be disabling tire wear due to EA's grossly unrealistic engine and the impossiblity of accurately simulating GT tire wear. But make sure you play with the advanced difficulty settings, like turning steering assist off! And have fun with what feels to be possibly the greatest race sim yet...

Colin McRae Rally 2.0 is my favorite PC racing game. If only i could use bumpmapping with my radeon....oh well :D

Thanks for the info Whynow. I cant wait to play this thing. I used to play STCC2 which was pretty cool, then recently i got into playing an older game called Sports Car GT which I love, but this Mod looks like it will wipe the floor with both of them.

Later
