what is the de facto antivirus nowadays, paid or free

i've been using microsoft security essentials for several years but it has been on a downfall since the early 2010's.

what do you guys use for an AV, free or paid, i dont care.

Avast Free Antivirus 2015 seems to have gotten a lot of downloads and a lot of positive reviews from cnet so as of now im leaning towards that.

As for the free:
It was AVG a few years back
Then it became Avira
And past 2 years it seems to be Avast Free, with some users even ending up upgrading to the "Internet Security suit" even users that never bought an antivirus.

Also the free edition (no active protection, just on-demand) of the anti-spyware: Malwarebytes is usually added to the mix, as a "once in a while scan for anything missed by the antivirus"

that + an adblock plus extension (with "optional ads" opt out off + localized language filter for non native English speakers\surfers) and possibly ghostery extension added too.

In regards to the paid:
Every single one of the non Avast paid users that I see is running Kaspersky.

Lastly for some users there seems to be an added anti-phishing layer called "Trusteer Rapport" I believe that some banks even went as far as to make it a mandatory software that is required in order to log-in to their accounts, from what I can tell its compatible "officially" with everything, yet meanwhile Kaspersky's stance is that it isn't, when in reality the two have many different features ... an a single overlapping feature that needs to be disabled in one of them to avoid issues.... - haven't personally looked into it as I am from the Avast user base =p

Hope that helps.

oh, and for the truly fanatics on top of all of the above... there's also the "NoScript" extension and PeerBlock software and possibly a VPN service as well (such as hidemyass)

[next step would be a PC running router flavor of Linux and firewall, between your actual PC and your house's cable\ADSL modem....

and an even further step would be an eBay old laptop with an eBay hard-drive bought elsewhere running the Linux OS Tails, not using any social network or known/common email provider and only using free WIFI in different locations

next step (towards madness?) would be same as the above with equipment bought for Bitcoins in different country\state than your own...

and then

then there's the forest\outdoors =p as only truly secure system is an offline one (buried under six feet of reinforced concrete, after being burned)

I think I have what comes with windows, I use nothing else, I only use the computer for a little gaming, very little browsing time on it, no downloads at all

Free:
Avast Free

Paid:
Kaspersky
ESET NOD32

I'm a fan of Kaspersky first, but I've been running NOD32 on all of my machines for the past few months and have nothing bad to say about it. I also run Malwarebytes Premium alongside any AV.

Avast is too bloated and throws a lot of false positives. Give Bitdefender Free a try.

Nerds and their bloat. God forbid. You got 16 ****ing gigabytes of ram. A few MB is not going to hurt you. Geeze.....

I was surprised my corporation uses AVAST. Part of me thinks a big part of it that it would take too much time and money to validate another software...:bleh:

Been using security essentials for the last several years and nothing else. Been on the same installation of windows 7 for the last 5 years without having to reformat.

Yeah I don't even notice the "bloat" of anything except Google Chrome.

I've found most good/high end AV's aren't easy on resources. Symantec EndPoint Protection and McAfee Enterprise come to mind.

If you think your company using avast is bad, I worked at a company years ago that was using the beta for Security Essentials. Needless to say within the first month I made them purchase Kaspersky Endpoint and the Awesome Administrative console.

keep it simple : Bitdefender Free and malwarebytes

the only issue i have with Bitdefender Free version is you can't exclude directories or files yourself ....its only when Bitdefender flag something you have the choice to exclude it or not ..
