Soundbar...

Have you checked out Sonos? Crazy expensive though. Their soundbar and sub will run you $1400 (goddamn son!) plus you need the $50 connector thingy plugged into your router.

FWIW, I have a Sonos setup, but not for home theater. IMO, their equipment is overpriced. However, the convenience they offer right now is unparalleled with their software integration (i.e. Amazon Music, wifi-AM/FM, etc). If their software wasn't as good as it is, they would be in trouble.

I'm not sure I would go with Sonos if the use is only for home theater, as I doubt the speaker quality will be as good as some of the links above. However, if this will also double for playing music and hooking up to various music sources, the Sonos components are fantastic in this area.

Hey guys,

I did look at Sonos -- but that was my worry -- the quality...I will go listen in store and report back.

I was playing with a few at bestbuy and, dont laugh, Bose one was pretty decent... but the one that i was really impressed was with a Samsung model. About 400 bucks... cant remember the exact model. Wireless bass and other goodies too. Very clean setup but the sound was pretty damn impressive. They had Sonos but it wasnt hooked up... was intrigued to hear that sucker.

I have the Bose 1 SR and am happy with it.

I have gone and looked at Sonos and they look good but it also wasn't hooked up so I couldn't listen to them.

I have a Samsung soundbar and its complete ****. Clutter sucks but you are never going to get decent anything out of a sound bar.

Yup. Unless space and/or money is a problem, it's 7.1 or GTFO

Lots of money and space. I am renovating my basement -- entertainment area is probably 1000 sq ft.

For me its for two reasons:

1. My little guy has sensory issues so loud noises are no fun -- so we don't often have the TV or stereo super loud.

2. Clutter -- maybe I am getting old but the idea of having 2 x towers, 2 x subs, 2 x bookshelves and a centre channel is just messy to me now.

I might consider a little Bose system as welll, or something else with small wireless satellites (if they exist?).

Somebody is getting a good deal on an amp and speakers tonight

Im with you about clutter. As much fun as 5.1+ systems can be they be messy, even those wireless ones where you still need to power and sync the rear speakers to the main amp. My next reno will be all about being minimal. But im relling you, there's this Samsung model at BB which sounded really good, nice bass as well. It can boom or you can dial it down. The Bose 2.1 GS series is pretty wild as well... clean setup but just dont know all the technical stuff. Heard it doesnt do DTS with BR, if thats an issue or not with yeah.

Found some links.

THe samsung i heard
They have a much more $$$ but i didnt hear it. The wireless connecting for phones and tablets is a pretty sweet idea.

The Bose 2.1
I like the sound that bose gives, its really clear and it does a good job at surround sound. Just $$$ for a 2.1 setup.

Switch, I did some searching on the Sonos Playbar and to be honest, I didn't really find many negative reviews of it (aside from the "doesn't compare to a true 5.1 setup" complaints).. As mentioned by Razeus, a setup with sub will be more expensive than the ones you listed (I neglected to see originally those two links had subs with them) so that might not be a bad option. The other downside than price, is that it doesn't support DTS.

Ugh, I thought this was a joke post at first. :o

If your going to seriously consider any sound bar then go with this.

Paradigm Millenia 20 Trio $1299

Now you would have to use a receiver with it however as it's not self powered. But if you need something powered then go with this.,

Paradigm Shift $1499

Neither come with subs. But can accommodate.

I would at least go with a couple high quality bookshelfs though if your wanting to kill the clutter.

Paradigm is about as high quality as you get.

I know your leaning towards a soundbar switch, but I would personally advise against it. Your doing a full reno of your basement thus doing some intelligent in wall/ceiling wiring is very simple and relatively clutter free(even less so with wall and/or ceiling mounted speakers) Going to a 5.1 setup instead of a 7.1 will help with the clutter and not loose out really on the sound quality. I know you said your kid is sensitive to noise so its relatively easy to turn down the volume when he is around and you have the option of using it properly when its just you and the wifey.

I have a giant basement. My wife loves to move **** around every week, there is no way I will be able to do in wall -- I could potentially have the speakers 20' from the tv depending on her imagination that day.

Still looking but so far like Bose and Def tech systems I have listened too.

Looking at sonos as well, about the same price point as bose.
