Media Center Edition 2005 and ATI AIW: Works Fine.

More time wasted on crap ATI software

More time wasted on crap ATI software

I 'upgraded' to 5.3 and my formerly stable MCE system is no longer. The recorder service hangs after a few recordings causing the MCE app to also hang if any TV features are accessed. Windows will not shut down because the service is hung. MCE could not find the tuner until I uninstalled Windows Media Encoder 9 - took a few hours to figure that out.

Looks like a WDM issue

Looks like a WDM issue

I reinstalled MCE, XP Cat 5.3, and the old hacked MCEE. Didn't install any other ATI software (MMC,DVD,RW, etc..). Hangs just like it did with MMC 9.06. The DTV Wonder analog capture seems to work fine, so it appears to be a problem with the AIW NSP WDM.

If you didn't install the MMC 9.06, AIW Turner should not be usable in Media Center. Catalyst 5.3 contains the NSP driver and MMC contains the encoder required for the Media Center to use the AIW Turner.

I think MMC looks to see if the AIW Encoder is registered and tries to use it.

If you're not using MCE try running a
regsvr32 /u C:\Program Files\ATI Multimedia\main\atimcenc.dll

and then tell me if MMC works with the SP WDMs. If you unregister atimcenc.dll, also try setting registry value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\Features\TV\Display\Use FmtConv to 0

If you have to use the NSP WDMs, you might want to try tweaking the registry value

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\Features\TV\Video Capture\Capture Delay
unfortunately, i still got a black screen in MMC with the SP drivers using those methods, and the NSP method did nothing aswell...

i should also note that i didnt restart my computer once while doing all this testing.... so this all may have been for nothing :/

XPMCE works well with ATI AIW9000 Pro

XPMCE works well with ATI AIW9000 Pro

Thanks ArcCoyote! As soon as I read your post I ordered Windows MCE 2005. Installed per your instructions, ( I needed to manually install the WDMs in Device Manager ) and it works great! I love the Microsoft 10ft GUI better than ATI's and besides that its more feature rich.

I didn't even have to get a MCE remote, I just reprogrammed my Remote Wonder with RWKeyFactory.

see this post for more info:

Works So far....

Works So far....

OK - this one is plain out weird!

I have an ABit AI7, AIW 9800 Pro, HDTV Wonder (removed the Avermedia 1500 MCE).

So I had nothing but trouble with the machine - after installing 5.3 - MCE hung -over and over again - could never get it to finish one recording and start another. Seems that it could not transfer control to the next scheduled recording.

So I tried a crazy idea - turn off HT. That worked great  - it did not hang - but everything it recorded was choppy and grainy and it was eating 80% of the CPU.

So I fell back to Kram's stuff (with HT still off) - and that at least recorded without as much choppiness - but still the CPU was at 80-90% - WAY to high.

Then I said what the heck turn HT back on - sure enough it works fine now - does this make any sense? I had heard that ATI's MCEE had issues with HT - and that Kram's version was better with HT - any ideas?

Thanks!

Try to disable the AIW TV Turner only, the HDTV and analog TV Turner on HDTV Wonder should be fine. The Cataylst 5.3 NSP driver and MMC 9.06 for AIW is not offically certified to support MCE. After I disabled the AIW TV Turner, I haven't got a crash or application hang or need a reboot for the last 7 days.

Does'nt work !!

Does'nt work !!

Well I spoke too soon. Sure enough MCE hung again last night. Without HT enabled - MCE works great. With HT enabled - all bets are off.

This is a real pain! Does anyone have an Abit AI7 that works??

Thanks!

i dont know about you guys, but on my system, i have yet for my computer to crash, only mce or mmc with the reciever service on or off, depending on each...

From what I have seen in this forum, AIW works fine in MCE if it is the only primary TV Turner in the system.

For those who had 2 TV Turners in the system and AIW is the secondary TV Turner. The result is Media Center hangs and freeze. My guess is the AIW WDM driver is not yet fully test as the secondary TV Turner.

While we did look at multiple tuner scenarios, it is possible an issue was missed. This thread has been noted and we are working to better understand the issue, and if possible fix it.

Our most complex setup by the way was AIW, eHomeWonder, HDTV Wonder. It worked, but at very high CPU load.

Mr. Orr:
Were you aware that the Gemstar Guide Plus, (older version 1.0.0.44) program updater, does not update to the latest Guide Plus 1.0.0.50, the latest version included with the Radeon AIW X800 card?

Also: Can you confirm whether MMC 9.xx has been definitively de-listed, as far as (in future) support for the Theatre 550 TV tuner cards?
I would like to perhaps purchase one of these TV cards, but won't unless supported by MMC & the Guide Plus program, under "regular" WinXP.
Thanks.

I was not aware of this GuidePlus issue, but I will pass it along.

As to whether or not MMC will work on TV Wonder Elite at any time in the future, all I can say is that it is not supported today and I will not comment on future plans. Don't try to read anything into that, I am implying nothing.

has anybody tried anything with the newest drivers to stop the video delay? i got the delay with my 9800 and backed down to mmc 9.0 and the drivers released at that time. i see the sp / nsp stuff inside the new driver file. id imagine removing or renaming could make the install use the sp by default which may fix some issues. i cant check into myself right now. maybe one of you?

being the fact that many different computer types and setups can be achieved on the end-user setup than in ati's labs, perhaps it would be possible to have a few test scripts prepared that we would be able to try at home?

also, i happened to leave MCE on overnight just to see what happens... ok nm i fell asleep :p ... anyway, when i came back, MCE claimed to have 'lost TV signal' or something to that effect . it was unresponsive to any input, but i was able to gain control of my computer again by alt+ctrl+del it. MCE's tv failed to respond until i restarted my computer and reconfigued the tuner in its settings.

i suspect that it may have something to do with MCE's TV-ON-Demand feature... perhaps it stores too much video, overflows with data, than becomes unstable? this was on NSP drivers, btw... just a thought :)

*cough* *cough* looking for co-op *cough* have testing experience *cough* Seneca CPA student ... :p

So is there any difference between the Sapphire Theatrix Theatre 550 Pro High Definition PC TV-Tuner vs. ATI TV Wonder Elite Theater 550 Pro Chipset? Elite and Pro so what's the diff or is just the same card but a different naming???

I have the Sapphire Theatrix Theatre 550 Pro card.

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27

What driver am I suppose to use?

1.TV WONDER ELITE
THEATER 550 PRO TV Tuner Drivers - 6.14.10.66

OR

2. THEATER 550 PRO Products
THEATER 550 PRO TV Tuner Drivers - 6.14.10.66

I have been using under the TV WONDER ELITE driver with my Sapphire Theatrix Theatre 550 Pro card or am I suppose to use the THEATER 550 PRO Products driver?

I have the Sapphire Theatrix Theatre 550 Pro card.

They're identical cards; the difference is in the included Remotes (and whether they'll work correctly under WinXP-MCE, if that's the O.S. being used).
The ATI included remote is RF (radio frequency), while the Sapphire remote is IR (infra-red).
To me, the difference in the Remote controls doen't really explain the large pricing difference: ~$80 (Sapphire version) vs. ~$135 (ATI version).

Version 1.0.0.38 doesn't update either.

updated to catalyst 4.4... no changes or improved performance in mce for me... anybody else feel the same?

i think you mean 5.4 but yeah.. i did too and i didn't see any differences really. But Here's a list of things i find strange when using my x800 xt all in wonder with my hdtv wonder. First of all i have the latest drivers (5.4 cats) for gfx card, lastest dtv decoder from ati from 4-8-05, and the latest mmc installed (9.0.61) and all works except 1 thing. When i watch tv with Media center i get HDTV no problem but my analog just displays a black screen. The way to get rid of this is to hit record on any random channel then change the channel to another analog station where then the other tuner kicks in and I then see the picture just fine.. I'm trying to find out which tuner is actually working cause i can't figure out whats wrong till i know which one is just giving me the black screen. I assume it's the aiw but not positive..When i then go to hdtv channel i can watch and hit record just fine.. but when i go back to analog again it goes to black screen then says Loss of Signal (media center has stopped caturing data due to low data rate in the tv signal. This may be a temporary situation.. if this persists make sure the cable for the tv signal is connected properly, restart the computer, and then try tuning to a channel.).. I have to then close down media center and Run net stop ehrecvr to close it completely, then reopen media center and i get it to work again. but only by recording on one channel then go to another channel etc.. all over again.. I used 5.3 cats and 9.6 originally and it was the same way.. for some reason it will detect all my tuners fine but there is 1 analog not complying completely.. thanks for any help..

edit: I've now found that is the DTV analog source that give me black screen and low or no signal. I thought for sure it was the aiw.. Maybe i need to install the Kram drivers.. thats strange.. Kinda sucks cause i want to use the duel tuner action or record one program and watch another.. if someone knows how to get the hdtv analog part working i'd love you forever.>!! Everything else works great.. and when i use the analog hdtv tuner in mmc it works just fine.. so kinda strange in my opinion.. I can use it but just want to get mce to do it the way it should.. thanks for any help..

edit: Ok.. i've figured it out on my own.. I at least still needed the kram driver install.now i can record and watch another program.. YEAH!!! finally after almost 5 hours of trouble shooting.. now if i could only get my fm tuner to work properly on my x800 aiw.. Nothin but static even with a 70 mile antenna.. my wifes 9600 xt gets PERFECT reception with a little wire antenna and she's right next to me.. I even put my rooftop antenna on hers and she gets even better reception! I think this fm tuner blows cause i even took back this card and got a new one thinking it was out as i've tried everything possible.. either that or the dongle is junk which ya never know i guess.. good luck to thers getting there aiw and hdtv/ tuner cards workin together.. as far as my situation with aiw/hdtv wonders it's all the latest cats, decoders, drivers etc.. and the kram install for the hdtv wonder and it should work perfect..
