Intel 13th Gen CPU thread

Intel still seems to be struggling versus AMD in multi-threaded workloads. 13900K at best only slightly beats 7950X in some work loads, while being way behind in others, but does so using insane power. So far the e-core thing doesn't seem to be working out that well for Intel, IMO.

I guess it looks a bit better further down the line-up where they essentially have a core advantage versus AMD.

Why so few? I don’t know. Time constraints maybe? I noticed something similar with the Ryzen 7000 Series launch. Certain CPUs in that product line were reviewed by more people than others.

It actually takes a long time to review those chips. It's not like they run the benchmarks once and then record the totals. They run the benchmarks multiple times usually at different days and then take the averages as the 'totals'. Sometimes on multiple samples of the same chip type to make sure they are getting good averages.

And that's not even messing with Bios settings. Each setup that they test gets tested multiple times.

If it's done right, it is a lengthy process.

I think Tech Jebus said that it took multiple people a week solid to get the 7950x review done at the end of that chips review.

Good info, thanks. The various tech sites and channels must have believed that the 13900K and 13600K would generate the most interest.

Right, 13600K. And I see a lot of people touting how big of a win this is.

I don't get it. If multi-core workloads is your thing would you buy a 13600K? Seems like your target user would be going for more cores in the first place at which point Intel's advantage more or less evaporates.

Could it be.. fanbois?

I think it's more of a value standpoint. Intel is offering really good low/mid-range value compared to AMD, especially with the ability to use DDR4.

Those were the only samples that they were given by Intel.

Intel didn't give any other chips out for the reviewers to review.

Just those 2.

The author of the Tom’s Hardware article speculated where potential 13700K might come from, and he appears to be correct. I just watched the first few seconds of the 13700K review from eTeknix on YouTube, and he said that they were able to "source" a "legit" sample of the chip. It must be the same with Windows Central and the others.

I just hope that these unknown sources are providing retail samples or review samples, not engineering samples. It’s probably best to take any early 13700K with a grain of salt.

100%.

Until mainstream third party reviewers get samples, it's totally grain of salt territory.

I just updated my review roundup with the note that we don’t know where the 13700Ks came from. Thanks. I will keep review sample sources in mind for the next time.

So, is there a consensus on a good Z790 motherboard and DDR5 memory to pair with a 13600K?

I like the MSI carbon. It doesn't break the bank and supports upto 7600mhz ddr5 which is higher than most other boards.

EVGA Classified looks nice. They did the trick where they changed the CPU alignment to make the Ram closer like in the KingPin Dark motherboards.

It also has the sideways power connections.

If it had water cooling leads I'd have made a serious run at that MB.

Then I changed over to AMD.

But that was in my top 3 list.

The other was the Asus Hero and the MSI Ace.

EDIT: That Evga Classified also has a thicker PCB. Which I always like.

Thanks for the suggestions. Seems alot of these boards aren't even available yet.

Hopefully there will be plenty of inventory in time for Black Friday/ Cyber Monday.

If anything if I even see a good deal on a 12900k/12700k DDR4 combo I'll jump on that and wait another generation. Right now though the price on 13600k is pretty damn good, it's just the other parts that go with it aren't, especially price wise.

A few days ago the EVGA Z690 Dark Kingpin was on sale for $500. That is a great last gen motherboard. It's back up to $830 now but I'll bet that they put it back on sale before christmas.

Even $500 is a bit much for a motherboard, I'm hoping there's eventually a $300 variant or less. Just the basics.

Wow just noticed the high TDP requirements for these 13th gen CPU's - I'm sure my lil Geminii M4 won't do too good with that CPU. I may need to step down to the non-K version or somehow fit an AIO in my Silverstone GD09b HTPC case...

Look into the EVGA Classified then. It's a nice motherboard. It went on sale a few days ago too. Can't remember what the price was on it. It's original price is $630. I want to say that it was in the $350 range on sale.

It's WAY overbuilt for what you get.
