I have to get an iPhone

The Windows phone platform is dead long ago so I am going to finally have to part with my old reliable. Everyone in my house already has Apple products and since I have to be the IT it makes sense that I get the same. Although every time I have to do something on them I feel like throwing the phone against the wall in frustration. But, I don't feel like suffering through Android's own unique frustrations either. (Why deal with both?). Someone please post something to cheer me up....

If you get a 6s or newer, you'll be fine. It's definitely more limited than Android and some UI/UX decisions are awful. But overall it's been manageable and I like the wide compatibility with so much stuff.

I switched from Android to iPhone after years of hating on the iPhone here. I really like my 6s+, it's great. The limitations it supposedly has are unnecessary on the platform IMO. No real need for a different launcher, which is the main limitation, and there's really not much need for jailbreak. Once you get used to the flow of the OS, it really works.

About the only thing I would complain about if I cared is Siri, but I don't care, because the assistants on all platforms are lame, IMO.

I've used both platforms extensively and they're on pretty even footing at this point but I still choose iPhone for my daily driver.

wait until the next release... AMOLED Screens mean you may get always on display, and there's a good chance they will use Wireless Charging as well...

I've already put this off as long as I can. So not going to wait. I'll get a 7 so maybe it will last a few IOS updates. They are pretty snappy. But, I am not too thrilled about the smaller screen low res 7 and will probably have to spring for the 7-plus. It seems pretty nice except for the $$$s involved.

Could always save some $ and get a 6s+. Mine still runs flawlessly.

I did end up getting the 7-plus. It is a very nice phone. The setup on it was very easy. Moving over from my WP was a snap. I just loaded the outlook app, hooked up my account, and then everything I had on the cloud was now on my iPhone. This is 180 degree opposite of the experience I had going from iPhone 4 to WP. That was more like performing brain surgery and Apple made it nearly impossible to easily export information outside of their ecosystem. One of the big reasons I hated them. But hatred aside, I am back and pretty happy with IOS 10 and the iPhone 7. Very nice build and really snappy performance. I am getting used to all things and think it will be just fine. The main reason I had WP was for my office work and compatibility with stuff I did on my PC. The office apps on IOS are really starting to shine. So much that I'd say the experience is better for MS Office on IOS than on WP. Not sure if MS cares or not. Clearly, they realize where the future is and have adjusted well. Haven't had it long and am not regretting it much at all yet. There was a couple of small items I miss from WP that probably are available in IOS but I am not sure how to do it.

1. Cortana had a feature where you could dial her up on the phone. This was nice in my car because I could just say "Call Cortana" over my Bluetooth and she came up and beeped. Then I could issue controls on my nav, music, and podcasts using Cortana. Siri works well through my Bluetooth. But, the only way I know to bring her up is to pull out my phone and push the home button. Is there any other way to do this?

2. I like maybe 6 or 8 podcasts that I listen to in my car. The Apple podcast app is OK. But, it doesn't seem to have another feature I liked on WP. On WP, you could take any subscribed podcast and pin it to your start menu. That way you can have a shortcut straight to you podcast on your home menu. In IOS it would be great if there was also a way to show how many podcasts for the subscribed channel that I have downloaded, but not listened to yet in the notification bubble on the icon. (Like email). Does anyone know of an app that I could use or is this something that the default player does? Or is there a better way to solve this?

PS. Thanks in advance for helping a noob...

Siri is a bit stupid, don't rely on her like you would Cortana or OK Google. Siri is hands-down the most daft "AI" on a top tier phone.

You can still use her always on "Hey Siri" functionality for calls and stuff. Might have to turn it on, not sure how it is by default. Music integration is a bit more locked down if you use non-Apple apps.

Outside of that, you should be golden. Learn the 3D touch features and you'll barely use your home button :) And enable raise to wake to make further pressing redundant :) It's a little like WP Glance, but not as well done.

If you have questions, start a new thread and rock and roll. Given your background, I think you'll be pretty familiar with most stuff. You have a good phone, new OS came out today which has some nice features and added snappiness.

Enjoy :D

Hey Siri works well for invoking Siri without touching the phone... almost too creepy that its always listening. Im sure the CIA has heard some **** it doesnt want to hear. I use it quite often to make notes, check weather, setup a reminder or alarm or just to ask a random question.

I keep Siri off. I figure it helps battery life anyway .. I don't ever have any motivation to use the voice stuff either.

Doesnt hurt battery at all... at least on the iPhone 7. It auto turns itself off in the dark(light sensor activated)

I pity the poor NSA soul who tries to listen in on my nighttime conversations:

me: "Did that thai food mess up your stomach?"
wife: "I told you not to get the curry. This happens every time"
me: "Really? *burp*"

.
.
.

They'd probably commit suicide after a few days of listening in :p

Not sure "Hey Siri" would work if the phone was in my pocket and while I am driving my car. Cortana had a special phone number you could add to your address book and call her directly. Surprised Apple hadn't thought of this too.

No it wont. But most newer cars support Apples car stuff(I dont have one that does) I think the only way to do it would be to take the phone out of your pocket and use Hey Siri.

My wife has a brand new Honda CRV and the Apple CarPlay is really impressive. Actually the entire touch screen system is amazing. Us old school Bluetooth users probably aren't that attractive to Apple anyway.

I tried to use siri over my Bluetooth in the truck one day to text my wife. The text that was sent was a rambling mess. I just call her now...

The only use I have for siri is "set timer" when I'm grilling. I do like how in IOS10 it tells me where I left my car when I park though.

Having used Android and IOS, I prefer IOS. I get updates to my phone, and don't have to worry about my stupid carrier deciding when to issue them.

Android has far superior voice recognition, and it's been doing the parking thing for ages. I had that feature on my Nexus 5 :)

Apple's OS deployment is excellent, but apart from that, most things are a push (and it is moot if you use a Nexus device or a Pixel device). Google really dropped the ball with the updates and the OEM's not pushing them consistently.

Is there anyway to have the iPhone announce when text messages are received over my Bluetooth connection? Connected to my car, my WP used to always announce when I received a text and asked if I wanted to read it. This was a nice feature when driving as I could hear and even reply to messages without even touching my phone.

Also, is there any way to get Siri to change the default map app. I'd like to ask for directions through Siri and have it use Google or Waze instead of Apple maps.
