I ran 1440p 60 on a 580 for over a year and a half it was fine and dandy at that resolution combo.I still want to go to 1440p someday. I think it's a decent trade off and nowhere near as stressful as 2160p. Just gotta to find a decent monitor and gpu.

1440p 60 high at the time ^_^You either turn down details or play very high framerate games.Which one is it ?

Maybe you turn down one or two settings that's almost impossible to notice.
I know you love 1080p because maybe you don't have much money, but many cards can do 1440p fine.
The only motivation for going 1440p is for the color accuracy / reproduction and 144hz of the LG 27 GN850-B in the same boat. This kind of monitor doesn't exist in 1080p coat or is way way too expensive.
A $400 GPU like 3060 Ti or a used 1080 Ti will be able to run 1440P just fine maxed out. So not sure wtf this thread is about.
Those are not 400$ GPU's.I am not sure where you see them at this price.
That's for tru60 fps on a 144hz freesync 1440p monitor is going to be better than 80 fps on a regular 1080p monitor.
You said $400 pre pandemic. Wtf?Those are not 400$ GPU's.I am not sure where you see them at this price.
