GeForce 5xxx series (Blackwell)

We all knew they would..... nVidia seems to have lowkey copied AMD's Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF2), driver side FrameGen, with "Smooth Motion".


And they did it like most predicted by locking it to only the 5000 series... which is just a dick move. Hope it comes to 4000 and 3000 series users as well.

I'm also surprised it did take some time to offer Smooth Motion but have trouble understanding why it is only for the 5XXX series. If they were dicks they would of locked Dlss 4 to the 5xxx series.

They sorta did. DLSS4's new feature is MultiFrameGen... Which is locked to the 5000 series. They also dumped the optical flow HW requirement from FrameGen entirely... But have kept regular FrameGen locked to the 4000 series anyway.

I'm not a fan of leveraging and potentially, artificially locking features but I am just a gamer and don't know what is going on behind the scenes. This generation is tough based on it feels much more like an incremental refresh than a powerful performance generation. Reminds me very much like the Turing generation. For me, the Transformer model does such a nice job, arguably and subjectively can offer that 4k Dlss 4 performance mode is similar to Native 4k and more than Native + average to poor TAA method.

And that's why process improvements are needed. Either more transistors for a given die size, or a smaller die size (cheaper.) Putting out a next-gen with what is fundamentally the same technology kinda limits how good it can get. Basically nVidia is just giving up a little of their profit to have a newer slightly better offering than 4000 series, but they can't squeeze enough transistors to do real generational uplift stuff.

You might remember nvidia stating that Moores law was dead?
 
End-user gaming cards are now more of an afterthought for Nvidia. Their real bread and butter is enterprise AI applications.
 
There are a lot of artificial intelligence features and abilities in Blackwell and one may see that is the way Nvidia is going to act on to create new experiences.

The Smooth Motion feature is going to be offered for the 4XXX series in a future driver update.
 
Yeah pretty underwhelming, but they are on the same node. The gape between the 5080 and 5090 is so bad. The 5080 is a joke, def skipping this gen. The coolers are awesome for the FE, but that's really my take away. Frame gen is cool, but you have to already have high frame rates in the first place for it to feel good IMHO. The 6080 better have 24GB lol.
 
I am still chugging along on my 3070 but it looks like I have to wait to see what AMD comes up with in the midrange for 1440p.The 5070 Ti reviews will be telling.

No support for the RTX 30XX SERIES?

Seemingly not... for no apparent reason... same story with DLSS4's newer FrameGen... which no longer even use's the Optical Flow Accelerator hardware. So unless they pull a surprise... :bleh:
 
Not really a surprise, nor even something I can really blame them for. Not supporting 1 generation back would be crappy, for people that haven't gotten a lot of use out of the card. but the 30 series is relatively old (at least on some skus) at this point, and nvidia's job is to try to provide incentives to upgrade the hardware. If they had a blanket policy of supporting every feature to the best of their abilities, then they'd stop developing software tweaks that encourage people to not upgrade the hardware.... either not bothering with the feature at all, or deliberately forcing a particular hardware feature to be used even if it isn't necessary or optimal.

I say this as a guy that was running a 2070 for a very, very long time.

On the upside many of the new "faster frames" tech isn't all that impressive to me. Bigger numbers, but downsides. The enhanced quality tech at least they seem to be migrating downward more.

Maybe it's time to go back to AMD.I am sick of Nvidia's shenanigans.
 
You know, I think I would have been happy to switch to AMD this gen if they just had made a card that was slightly faster than a 4090, I'm so sick of having a melting timebomb in my pc.
