Galaxy Note 8

Got my Note 8 a week ago. For whatever reason Verizon shipped theirs early. So far, thumbs up. I didn't go case shopping until this past Saturday. Ended up with an Otterbox Commuter and an Invisible Shield screen protector. Not half an hour later I drop the darn thing in my girlfriend's place.

Thankfully it didn't happen before I got the case.

what kind of bloat did Verizon put on it this go around?

The typical Verizon apps (Cloud, Caller ID, etc.) and if I recall correctly, the NFL and Slacker Radio apps. I had the ones I didn't want uninstalled or disabled within a minute.

I called and asked yesterday if they would have any other "unlocked" colors coming out later and they said yes. So, I asked if I could do the pre-order but get a different color device when it became available... They said no.

So I got to thinking... If I am about to spend $630 on a Note 8 and trading in my Note 5 to you... You'd think they would be like.. "We can make this work. Just put a note in the system and when the other colors launch, call in and state your color preference."

I canceled my order.

Ill pay full price when the other colors come out in the unlocked versions.

I got a black unlocked I was a note 7 owner so I samsung gave me 450 off with some crap trade in. So i sent in a s5 I had in the drawer and got 450 off. I also got a tmobile one and I noticed I could uninstall the bloat without any problems. I've been using a 7 plus for the past year. I have the s8 plus but I was actually too lazy to swap my stuff over to it when it came out, it's still sealed in the box infact lol. Anyway, liking the move back to android for daily use so far. Good phone, battery is alright. A little lame that I had to load action memo back as they took that out. Feels good to have a note again.

Got mine on Friday, loving it so far, not missing the physical home button at all.
I went with the Samsung alacantara cover which feels very nice in the hand.
Anyone here get a screen protector? Thoughts? What type did you get?

I have the Otterbox defender case which does not come with a built in screen protector like the past designs have for other phones. I tried one of the glass screen protectors. It worked, but wasn't as sensitive as I would have liked, and some times you had to press a little more than expected on the screen to sense button pushes, so I removed it.

I then tried a skinomi screen protector for it. Went on great, and stayed on (does not peal up and such as long as you follow the directions properly). It looks great, and has great sensitivity, pretty much as spot on as a naked screen. However, it has one problem, which is partly my own fault, because I tend to press on my s.pen when using it, and that causes intentions in the screen protector. they do seem to disappear for the most part after a couple days, but I use the s.pen a lot, and it bugged me, so I took it off.

I am now going with a naked screen, specially after researching the gorilla glass 5 that the note 8 uses. Pretty much after doing so, I have come to the conclusion, that no screen protector is going to protect the glass from anything that the gorilla glass isn't already going to keep from happening. So it is pretty much pointless, specially if you are not stupid with your phone and not careless.

Of course if I find out different, I will let you know.

Thanks.

I went 'naked' with my s7 edge and the Spigen cover I had for it didn't protect it well enough literally the only time I dropped it. Put some nice deep short scratches near the edge and now the phone has dark regions along one edge.

I totally resented owning an s7 edge so didn't really care about the damage.

here is a "scratch and durability" test of the Note 8:

I just looked at his s7 edge test, and it scratches also at level 6:

Just wanted to share this anecdote.

This was the first time I've ever really felt like I didn't need pen & paper or computer to carry around with me at a meeting/conference.

I attended a 3 day long summit filled with countless meetings, and not once did I feel compelled to open my laptop or use a physical notepad.

The Note 8 remained faithful throughout the entire trip and helped in every aspect of the meetings, from taking notes, to planning trips, to split-screening Uber rides and Emails...it was mind-blowing to see it handle these situations without a single hiccup or stutter.

Also, the always on-screen note taking ability is INCREDIBLE and did not feel the least bit distracting as the screen is all black and you can take notes in that scenario for hours on end.

Your post is both helpful and hurtful. You've helped push me more toward the Note8 as my next phone, but that will hurt me in terms of $. Nevertheless the real world usage you've shared answers some of the questions I've had, very well.

I've had mine for almost 2 weeks now. Blown away!! This is by far leaps and bounds better than my recently deceased Note5. Everything about this phone is better.

TW is snappier and has much less unneeded crap. For the first time, I feel no need to root or install custom roms.

The cameras on this thing take absolutely stunning photos and in low light it's much better than my Note 5...much much better.:-)

As for all the complaining about the misplaced finger print scanner, I havnt had issues with it due to using a case. The opening in the case for the cameras and sensors helps me locate exactly where the scanner is. I hold my phone in right hand and use index finger. No issues there for me and who wouldn't use a case for a phone this expensive ? I purchased the black Samsung case with side stand.

The speaker on this thing won't throw you off your chair but compared to every other Samsung device I've had since the galaxy S2, it's much better. At least now I can hear and understand what I'm listening to in noisy areas. I havnt tried the headphones yet but I hear that they are excellent.

And what about the screen? Samsung has long held the crown for screens and this Note 8 is no exception...I look at it and think..."Wow...just wow !!" Under glaring sunny days I can see what I'm doing!!! Much more so than with Note 5 and in normal light conditions, the images and text pop out with such clarity that your left with a warm fuzzy feeling that maybe just maybe you didn't overspend for this phone and it's worth every single penny.:-)

For the first time, I was able to acquire the phone with a case and a tempered glass screen protector at the day of purchase. I love the case but the glass not so much. Screen isn't as sensitive and I sometimes I need to press harder or more often to get a result.

All in all this phone is a huge upgrade for me. I'm supper happy so far :-))
