Foundation

I don't currently subscribe to apple, so I guess I'll wait and see. If it gets top reviews, maybe I'll jump in.

Looks more action-oriented than the books. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’m pretty pumped.

please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, please don't ruin it, .....

Given that's what Hollywood usually does with book-to-screen adaptations, I'm not holding my breath.

I really don't feel like these books are prime options to be adapted to television either. :bleh:

I think the Robot series would have made more sense.

Foundation is like Dune. Big, slow. Clearly they're "movifying it" by showing the empire degrading into anarchy, etc. Could work... as-written, it totally wouldn't work. Screenwriters may be able to change it to something that is appealing though.

It's been too long since I've read the books but I don't remember anything that happened in ep1 in the books. Going to save ep2 so the wait to ep3 won't be so long. The pacing of the ep was fine, slightly over 1 hour run time went by smoothly. First 5 min was like ??? but I went with it. Effects was good, Atmos was used some. Social commentary 1, unfortunately concentrated in one scene so you can't miss it, urgh.

Anyways remember to use the spoilers tag when discussing plot points.

Spoilers in the link perhaps. Ars Technica summary review below. Some other reviews not so enthusiastic?

Isaac Asimov's hugely influential Foundation series of science fiction novels is notoriously difficult to adapt to the screen. The author himself admitted that he wrote strictly for the printed page, and he always refused invitations to adapt his work for film or TV. But Asimov was more than happy to let others adapt his work to a new medium, and he was wise enough to expect that there would—and should—be significant departures from the print version.

That's just what showrunner David S. Goyer (Dark Knight trilogy, Da Vinci's Demons) has done with Foundation, Apple TV+'s visually stunning, eminently bingeable new series. Goyer describes it as more of a remix than a direct adaptation, and to my taste, it is a smashing success in storytelling. This series respects Asimov's sweeping visionary ideas without lapsing into slavish reverence and over-pontification. That said, how much you like Goyer's vision might depend on how much of a stickler you are about remaining faithful to the source material.

...

The actors all deliver strong, powerful performances from the aforementioned leads on down, and the cinematography and costume and production design are exceptional. Apple TV+ is deeply invested in this series, and it shows. If I had one tiny quibble, it would be that Goyer had so much ground to cover to set up this first season that the big ideas sometimes feel more ornamental than central. I'd love to see the ensuing seasons (assuming they transpire) take a few more breaths here and there to bring those elements front and center more often. I'm confident this writing team could do so without bogging down everything else that works so well.

In short, this is a terrific first ten episodes—Goyer envisions some 80 episodes, should Apple TV+ give him the chance—with no maddening cliffhanger. The finale resolves several plot lines and sets up a few others, leaving viewers both satisfied and eager for more. I think Asimov himself would be pleased with Foundation, particularly since his daughter Robyn is an executive producer on the series and signed off on Goyer's vision.

Erg, the other reviews touch on ep2 which is making me want to watch that straight away. I really don't know what could be done with the two major complaints about the show. One it spans centuries so uh people die of old age which makes it hard to get attached to a character (which is probably why they did that thing with the antagonist). Two, the story is epic and requires setup (which I thought ep1 one rushed through and am hoping there will be back fill). Plus they had to stray from the books so it wouldn't be even more boring which will no doubt irk the purists.

Honestly I was expecting a slog fest of ponderous exposition and setting up of the chess pieces. Maybe ep2 is that but ep1 moved along fine given my expectations.

Should have waited, knew a cliff might be in the works, FYI to the impatient. Noticed Atmos being used well. The groundwork being laid; honestly this show should be subtitled as a story inspired by the books as its clearly off doing its own thing now.

Started this. Was in wtf state for 20 mins before falling asleep. Will try again as visuals are nice.
