Display Port Cable Issues

No, those Apple adapters don't work at all for Eyefinity. They barely even work any more on Apple products. I see them all the time in environments where we need to connect Apple Laptops/iMacs/Pros to non-Apple external displays and it's getting more and more difficult to get them to work. That's another story. But, take it from me, those Apple adapters aren't going to work, ever.

You need to buy one made by Accell for the best results. I can also say that I've had good luck with Startech.com adapters, along with the one's that Sapphire Tech sells.

Hope this helps.

Looks like the hubs close now Club3D

mini review here

No idea if this product will actually fix this issue outlined here.

Also the product shows a displayport to displayport connection no pic of a mini dp version. If you need a mini to reg displayport connector for your vid card will they also release a 1.2 adaptor or will you be stuck with a 1.1a ?
It will be a pricey solution at best sigh.

Thanks for the links. After years with the screen tearing problem in Eyefinity, and now with the Display Port cables nightmare since I changed my monitors, I'm ready to spend whatever I need to spend in one of those adapters, hoping that it will fix both problems once and for all.

I'd love to know if the 7990 card includes some kind of "hardware protection" against "non-compliant" DP cables, like nVidia cards (apparently) have

I have 3x S27A950s, used to get a couple of display link errors a day.

Bought 3 Accell mini displayport to displayport 1.2 cables.
and have not any display link error since plugging them in.

Says they are good for 4k video on the box :)
(and display hubs)
$29 Australian from gadget shop, one of the offical distributors in Oz

spoke to soon, I have had a few "not optimal resolution" blank screens.
(changing input source to hdmi and waiting for it to return to displayport gets the screen working again)

So its not the cables...

Yeah.. I bought belkin and now accell cables and they haven't made any difference whatsover. What really cut down the number of errors was turning off the 'AMD External Events Utility' in the adminstrative services panel. I used to get 5+ errors a night across 3 screens, but now I'm lucky to see 1..

I bought my cables from amazon uk, as they were 3 for $65 delivered.. The 3 official resellers in oz are charging ~$30 a cable.. And when questioned about why so expensive.. 'we're only making $5 a cable on these'... riiiiiiiiiiight ;)

I'm so glad to finally find people having the same trouble as me.
I recently got a third monitor, so obviously wanted to get Eyefinity working. I had already bought an Apple Mini Displayport to VGA Adapter (which is active, according to the Apple website, which is all I thought I needed).
First time I plugged everything in, stuck at 640x480 on that screen. Did some Googling, someone suggested just unplugging and replugging the adapter, so I did that, and suddenly I could get 1920x1080! However, when I tried to enable Eyefinity, it either just didn't work or set the combined resolution to 1920x480...
I did get it working at one point by playing around with unplugging it, but obviously if I try to swap back to extended displays it breaks again, and I can't easily switch between the 2 as I had hoped to do.
I tried disabling "AMD External Events Utility" as suggested earlier in the thread but that did nothing.
Oh and the one message I've been seeing a LOT from CCC: Link failure in your displayport. :/

If I were to somehow remove pin 20 from the Mini Displayport end of the Apple adapter, would that be likely to fix it?

I purchase a 5970 on Dec. 2009?? or a month after they came out. I wanted to go eyefinity so I got 3 x1680x1050 dell P2210 native dp monitors. Used one with a mini dp to dp cable from monoprice. Had a few issues with display link failures but not to bad. Found a article that talked about the 20 pin power problem that is described in this thread. Ordered a few more cables in case I screwed them up in the operation.

I have a precision screwdriver set and in that set one if the pieces had a end that tapered into a very small almost push pin sized end. I used that to push the 20 pin straight into the hole it was in. As I pushed the pin in the middle bent in and I the used the tool to push the pin down into the side end of the port.

I had maybe 2-3 display link errors or blank displays in the almost 2.5 yrs since with the 5970.

For the last 6 months I have had sapphire flex 7950 cards in crossfire. I have all my dp cables with the 20 pin pushed to the side and have not had a issue in six months.

Thanks Vladdo, I'm giving your turning off the 'AMD External Events Utility' a shot so far so good. I was seeing multiple link errors a night was much worse under Win 8 than it was under Win 7.So bad in fact I went back to dual-link dvi connection.

I've also noticed that the dropouts were more prevalent under win 8 than win 7.. I suppose a good test would be to try it under a linux install, but haven't been bothered with it..

I must say, apart from a blank screens that first day, these new cables have been a lot better, no blanks since then.

Though saying this now is probably going trigger it now

I've been repeatedly bugging BizLink to call me and give me an ETA on the MST Hub that is mentioned and pictured in the AMD Knowledge base. Here's the 2 places that it is mentioned and pictured:

http://support.amd.com/us/certified/...dpcapable.aspx

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...splayPort.aspx

As you can see, those articles are very recently updated. I finally got a call yesterday from Steven of Accell Corp., which is owned by BizLink. He told me a limited shipment of the hubs, both DP and mDP versions, would be arriving the first week of July at Accell. They will need to be SKU'd with some vendors and then shipped. So, sometime in July some of them will be available.

Just an FYI for everybody.

Peace.

Yeah I've given up on my modded cables and have ordered half a dozen accell cables from Australia. Seems as though I have to chase them though, I gave them my CC details and heard nothing since...

I'd like someone with more knowledge than I to explain why the following happens:

I own two 7950 Sapphire Flex cards in Crossfire; Flex technology allows for mixed multi monitor connections without the need for an active DVI to miniDP adapter, since Flex cards come with their own DVI to HDMI adapter and, as far as I understood it, a chip on the card is responsible for proper signal conversion.

This doesn't get rid of the tearing on the side monitors, so since I had already purchased two active DVI to miniDP adapters for my previous 6950 Crossfire setup I decided to ditch the DVI to HDMI adapter provided by Sapphire and plug the center monitor directly to the DVI port while using the two active DVI to miniDP adapters for the side monitors, just like I did on my previous 6950 Crossfire setup to try and get rid (unsuccesfully) of the tearing.

It didn't work then, it works perfectly now; 7950 Flex with tri-monitor setup --> 1xDVI + 2xactive DVI to miniDP adapters --> tearing completely gone.

This means I'm not using the Flex technology on the card (afaik it should pertain to the HDMI port only), but for some reason on these cards this particular connection combo (and this type only, as all others were giving me side monitor tearing) solves the tearing alltogether (yeah!)

I find it hard to believe this same result cannot easily be achieved on a wider scale on multi-monitor mixed connections, perhaps through modification of the existing electronic design. On the 7950 Flex cards it is already possible indeed, provided two active DVI to miniDP adapters are used.

^Not really related, you should start a new topic.

Received my Accell cables on Monday, absolutely zero issues since swapping them out and I have switched from 2xDP + 2xDVI to full 4xDP.

The previous modded cable was getting worse, 2/3 times when waking from sleep the res would drop to 640x480. I think there is something else beyond the pin 20 issue, it did reduce the frequency but didn't get rid of it completely, the Accell cables on the other hand seem to be perfect so far.

This is the first time that I can say that paying extra (a lot extra) for cables was absolutely worth it. If any of you can get a hold of them just do it.

Just tried to flashing a newer version of the video card bios. So far my display port cable issues seem to be resolved. The issues I had were resolution go down to 720P and windows position would reset itself after going stand by. Current using the 6ft DP M/M cable from Monoprices. So far so good, hopefully stays that way.
