Demon Soul (PS3)

I have the import version so I'm assuming I cannot play on North American servers :(.
Not sure, but I think you are better off playing the Europe version anyways. The American servers will be shut down in March, which is really sad news. This game is just one of the best games ever made, at least in my opinion. I actually bought the PS3 this week, along with Demon's souls just so I could play it before they shut down the servers, and I am glad I did.

Their implementation of multi-player for example, cannot be found anywhere else.

yea , basically this game is somthing you have never experience before, if you think you have played this kind of rpg game before. then you have not yet played demon souls. it is just a special game for gamers.

Didn't realize they were shutting the na servers down. Seems rather sudden imo.

what are the controls like for this game? Is it a hack and slash?

if you're easily frustrated by video games then you should not touch this one as I dont want to read any complaints about this awesome game.

if you die at any point you will have to restart the level, but you can rez yourself if die.

Not entirely true, there are certain "checkpoints" in the levels, after you clear a boss, or a long section. ;):p

My friend gave this game to me today. So started to play it today, and OMG!!!!! Why, Why would he give this to a console noob, the game is hard, extremely hard.:runaway:

yep, and the sequel will be even more challenging. At least that's what Hidetaka Miyazaki says.

Yeah, so I talked to my friend and told him that I am not ready for this game yet being a console noob, so he gave me the receipt from Gamestop and I was able to return it (used game he bought for me 2 days ago) and I got Star Wars Force Unleashed 1 for $2 out of my pocket, loving this game so far.

In time I'll get Demon Souls though, it looks like it can be fun

Bought the game. Played it and got killed again and again and got further and further behind. Things got more difficult. Interest subsides. Left the game alone.
Waste of $20.

I agree with Fuku2. I am not a console noob. Played DMC 4, God of War 3, etc. But I hated this game.

This game isn't even that hard compare to other games. All it has was the LACK of checkpoints. Yup that is right I called it. This game is no harder than Dead Space 2 or many other games. It just lacks checkpoints. And so once you die you have to climb your way back and do everything again with half the hp. What a waste of time.

The ancient PC games also lacks checkpoints. But they would at least let you save anytime. Not this game. What a cheap way to make this game hard.

Let's say tomorrow I remake Doom 2, with no save feature and there is only one checkpoint every 5 levels. Will people praise me for how hard the game is?

People were giving this game 9/10 for how hard it was. I will give it 2/10 for being a broken game with a lack of checkpoint and save features.

Thanks for the info. I wanted to buy this game, then heard the servers would be taken down, then extended, etc. etc.

So at the core, it's one of those retarded games with "artificial" difficulty? I hate those kinds of games and hate even more when these kinds of games get good reviews. Challenge is not about making people repeat the same thing over and over again.

It's not, they just suck at it, or rather, don't have patience. :p There is no reason to die unless you **** up, really. And yes, if you screw up, you repeat it. Practice makes perfect. :)

Cheap difficulty to me is games like Far Cry where the AI could be 10 thousand miles away and shoot you with pin point precision with a rocket launcher. Or games that have random hidden traps that you cannot deal with until you die to them first. On this game, except for the bosses, all the enemies are on equal footing as you in terms of mechanics (blocking, dealing damage, weak points, etc). That to me is difficulty.

On Demon's Souls the difficulty is in learning the correct ways to deal and block damage, as well as learning the advantages of certain weapon enchants and the like. Once you nail that down, its not too bad and you just have to think how to beat things.

The best way to play Demon's Souls, imo, is without reading a strategy guide and doing it your own way. For instance a friend told me I needed a ranged weapon, no matter what, to defeat the spider boss. Well, I went there without a ranged (I didn't bother going looking for one) and found a melee strategy that worked for me and was very satisfying. On the first "tutorial" boss I played the game as a barbarian, meaning you have no gear at the beginning except for a wooden mace and beat it. I died many times, because I screwed up.

Meaning, as long as you play correctly it's completely beatable without having to "grind" for gear necessarily, that to me speaks volumes of the game. The mechanics allow for you to beat the game through skill only. And if you are one of those people who loves gear (i do) there is a ton of special hidden gear etc, which you most definitely want to read on because every piece has a special "requirement" for it, like world tendency.

Don't misunderstand what I am trying to say, though. You will die, many, many times, but every time it will come down to a screw up on your part.

I agree. The game isn't cheap, it simply punishes you for mistakes. There's a trick to everything in the game. Once you figure it out, you have to worry about making that one fatal mistake that'll send you back to the beginning of the level. I put well over 100 hours into Demon's Souls before I beat it the first time. There were a couple of times I thought about quitting (Tower Knight boss anyone?) but stuck with it and was rewarded with a satisfaction I've not felt playing a game in a very, very long time. There are TONS of hidden secrets, items, weapons and places to find in the game. Not to mention the PVP aspect is rather heart pounding, since you actually have something to lose.

Bottom line is: it's the type of game you love or hate. There's no need to badmouth it if you don't like it. I loved the challenge and I still play it regularly. If you want to play games where everything is handed to you on a silver platter, stay away. This game isn't for children.
