Catalyst = SUCK!

Well, finally got these things to work and afterwards, what do I find??? GTA3 no longer works because all of the textures look messed up and I can't say I noticed much improvement in Soldier Of Fortune 2 either! :(
I will stick to these Omega ones for the time being I think!

GTA3 is a piss poor programmed port from a console game with almost no support for it

sof2 i havent played yet to look

but i do have to ask can you please please quit your *****ing......youre all over in threads pissing and moaning as it is

do you really feel it necessary to start a new one? especially considering there is an official thread stickied up top that you could post this in instead of wasting space

oh wait hah i dont have to worry you already said taht if they sucked you would just get a GeeFarce Cork

lol.. I knew this would happen. ATI was alerted to the issue with GTA3. I mentioned this in a seperate thread, but please pass this on.

To make the Catalyst drivers work with GTA3 you need to use Rage3D Tweak to disable the Table fog and Z fog registry entries (and make sure W-Buffer is disabled). This will make GTA3 playable with the new drivers.

spread the word.

To manually edit the registry and accomplish the fix, you need to find and edit the following registry entries in the ATI registry keys.

ExportWBuffer = 0 (can make this change in ATI control panel)
ZFogEnable = 0
WFogEnable = 0
TableFogEnable = 0

If you can't find them in your registry (particularly relating to Windows XP), then use Rage3D Tweak to make the changes.

Uhm Ichy, I tried to download Rage3D tweak last night and it didn't work it seemed to be off Ratchets Site(hosted on their). I'm gonna go retry downloading it.

crash override: simply cause those drivers work FOR YOU doesn't mean that they don't suck. If he paid 39€ for gta3 and 200€ for his radeon, maybe he WANT they to work properly together without problems.

They don't suck.
And I think that he payed 200 for the radeon is pretty irrelevant, since it's most probably the crappy mad GTA3 which is the source of the problem.

The link is active again. Ratchet took it down the other day. I need to get a 2nd mirror up, and will do that as soon as I can this afternoon... expecially since I need to release v3.3 today to fix the smoothvision entries in the tweaker to be compatible with the new catalyst drivers (everything 'cept the smoothvision stuff works with v3.2 though).

Formerly the secondary download server was this one, but as you can tell from the speed in the forums right now with record breaking activity, we are at the absolute limit of our available bandwidth... putting the tweaker download on this connection would bring the forums to its knees.

on the VIA KT266pro not the KT266aPRO.... has anyone got catalyst to be on the stable side???

cause when i was reading the pdf of catalyst, it looked promising, cause it claims to fixed VIA's infinite loop problem for the vid card. I would like to hear feed back about this particular thing, considerin i am going to test these new drivers when i get home in 6 hrs....

man i am itchin to install these.. cause the only ati drivers that appear stable are the 6015 drivers... and that is a laughing matter

I just downloaded Rage3D tweaker, but if Smootvision isn't compatible with the Catalysts I won't install.

Thanks for the reply. In about two weeks I'm gonna have acess to a T3 line. I can't help you know, but in 2 weeks(;)) if you need me to host anything I can, so PM if you need me to host.

Just hang out until this evening when I get 3.3 out if you want. 3.2 works fine, you just cant set the smootvision setings in the tweaker, you need to use the ATI tabs for that with 3.2. 3.3 will fix that and add the texture LOD settings in d3d and such.

I wouldn't quite go blaming GTA3 entirely, I got it yesterday and it runs like a champ on both my systems. A PIII800@944, 512MB, GF3 & 1Ghz Celery, 320MB, GF2 MX400. (Ok, maybe it don't quite "run like a champ" on the mx400...but it really does run pretty good on it.)

I'm half-tempted to say this is an ATI-thing...maybe the GTA3 programmers just aimed at nVidia and it isn't ATI's fault, but it still seems that a lot more ATI folks are having trouble with this one than us nVidiots. :p

Digital, go check out www.gta3.com and read the forums. Think you'll find PLENTY of nvidia users with problems. I mean a ton of people. They really farked up on the release of gta3.

Comparing to 6071 no improvements...it was all about new tabs and so on.

Anyway I played last nithg ut2003 works great :) see yaa

GTA3 is the shittiest port ever. ATI drivers probably have a small part in performance but i'm willing to bet 99% of the problems are derived from the game itself.

Let me solve the debate once and for all GTA 3 blow monkeys as*es there programmers were crack whores who should do us all a favor and not make another so called program... My friend has a geforce 4 4600 card and has issues with gta 3 I have a 8500 and it some what work but it bleeds the memory to much. this is caused be a incompetent programer not having the program clear the memory and is often caused by a miscalculation in the equations in the programing of the program.

but all in all gta 3 could be a good game as soon as they admit they screwed up and make a massive update for there hap hazzard programing

Actually, the Catalyst drivers didn't fix the IL on my sytem, just rebooted after an IL in MW. I have however, found a nice little tool that helps keep my CPU cooled -- vcool, its for via chipset motherboards only, any temp over 60C and the system will beep to tell you.

If you're interested....

http://vcool.occludo.net/

By the way, is it normal for Athlon processors to hit 60C when gaming? My system likes to hit right around 59-62 when playing MW, UT, Q3, Dungeon Seige, and Summoner. I havn't noticed the cpu getting this hot in other games, but then I didn't have a temp monitor installed then either.

Without Vcool installed and Idle loop enabled my cpu temp will hover around 50C all the time, even when in standby. Is this normal also?

Thanks for any help

Well I have to say that im impressed with them. My 3DM2K1 went up to 3500+ from 3100+!! GTA3 still sucks but it runs. The only thing Im waiting for is a way to play Morrowind for more than 10 min without it crashes, but thats a Bethesda patch im waiting for. Keep up the good work ATi, now aim for Great!

i must be one of the lucky people or something. all of ati's drivers have ran great. i bought the card back before smoothvision worked in the drivers, but i never use it anyways due to it making most games slow as ****.

but yeah, ive never had any troubles. even with gta3 (other than the fog issue with the catalyst).

i like the new panels, so i give 'em a thumbs up!

dissapointed

dissapointed

I'll begin by saying that these drivers have wonderful features\options, though, they have totally disappointed me.

When using Windows Media player, red and blue shadows appear on trailers to movies and demos, etc..

Games look good, though, it seems that these drivers disable anti-aliasing somewhat within game code making the textures far more jagged, forcing you to use AA, I find this very annoying. There are also anamolies which had never appeared before, flashing textures, and choppy motion, even though I had vsync enabled.

The end result is ATI had failed again. Features\options and time was simply wasted with this new driver set. Back to 9031's.
