Buying a new system suggestions for parts needed..

logical

bout to lose my job TODAY
I basically need everything at this point. The only thing set in stone is I am carrying over my current PSU and I am getting a 5900x.

What do you guys recommend on motherboards, ram, and anything else.

CPU: 5900x
PSU: Already Have
GPU: 3080 already have(courtesy of acroig the 3080 Illuminati)
RAM: ??? At least 32gb
MOBO: ???
CPU Cooler: ???
Decent M2 Drive: ???
Case: Subjective but mid tower

I want this system to last another 4-5 years-ish like my current system so I dont mind paying more for something if it will last longer and make sense.

You can hit up KAC for a slightly used Arctic Freezer II.

Don't know much about the AMD stuff but I do know that Motherboard and RAM are a tricky thing. If it were me, I'd settle on a Motherboard first and then look at their documentation about what ram works with that board.

As far as the m.2... I went with Samsung and I love it.

Samsung all day for drive. Their data tool alone is worth it.

Waiting for Nunz to recommend a $400 mobo. :p

Wait until October for AlderLake. At a minimum, good price reduction on AMD's overpriced chips right now, and you can consider snagging the new platform with DDR5 and PCIE5.0.

Crucial makes great SSDs. I've used them exclusively and never had an issue, also great pricing compared to Samsung. Samsung decided to charge a ton for the 980 PRO even though it's a TLC drive, not an MLC like the 970 Pro. Unless you're moving a ton of data, any normal TLC drive will do. I wouldn't go with a QLC though.

CPU cooler.. either Arctic Liquid Freezer II or EK AIO.

For case, I'd check out Phanteks "P" series for great airflow. You'll want a case with some mesh panels to have a nice open flow of movement.

If you decide to stick with AMD and the 5900X, even though the platform is dead and you're buying something you won't really be able to upgrade from without a full platform change (not counting the chips they're releasing that just have more cache..) then go for DDR4 no higher than 3600 with CAS latency no higher than 16. You can tweak from there. Good luck with the FCLK game on a Ryzen..

Yeah, this close to new platforms. I would wait, if you've waited this long.

I dont mind going to a dead platform, its not like when something new comes out in completely invalidates how what I have performs. I am no longer at the point of needing the absolute bleeding edge of technology.

I am ready to purchase now so Im probably going to stay with the 5900x and get this over with. I dont plan on upgrading anything in the computer, except video cards, over time just like my current system. A more of a get the best I want to pay for now and let it ride out til I need something new.

Also I forgot to mention I dont plan on messing with timings and overclocking anything so the system will be straight stock. I dont have the time or patience to want to deal with any of that stuff either.

The Pro seems to have an issue when TLC cache is full. Read speeds stay around the 7000MB/s mark but write speeds drop to ~2500MB/s (and half that on 500GB model). Leaving system idle for a while clears the cache, if you're lucky.. Updating firmware seemed to fix it, but it's back again after some time.

I just installed a vanilla 980 (Gen3) for storage drive and read and write are 3500/3000 MB/s respectively.

5900x OR 11900K
X570 Tomahawk or Aorus Master (Rev 2) OR Z590 Tomahawk or Aorus Ultra or TUF or Strix E
32 GB GSkill 3600/3800 CL14 OR 32 GB GSkill 4000 CL14
Corsair H150i Elite Capilex 360
Seagate Firecuda 530 (whatever is the PCIe 4 version) or Sabrent Rocket PCIe 4 or Corsair Force PCIe 4 version
Phanteks P500A or Corsair 5000D Air flow or Lian Li O11 XL
Fans Arctic P12 RGB fans or Lian Li Uni SL fans or Corsair LL120s or if you like the ugly Noctua A12x25

Both AMD and Intel options. Anything left to right is more expensive. I would stay away from Samsung 980 Pro drives.

Well with the new parts on the way over the next 12 months, you may be better off waiting. But then again it doesn't always mean lower costs for the items you want, only the crap you'd never buy seems to get cheaper now.

I'll let everybody else chime in for everything else, except for the memory. I have 2 laptops (other than the shitty ones work gave me that I have to use to remote in) the old one has 32GB and the new one 64GB.

The 32 hits that several times a day, more if I've got a shite load of browser tabs open. The 64 almost never. So 32 is good right? Nope, if you plan on keeping the new build for several years you know the cost of DDR4 memory is going up as soon as DDR5 is mainstream. Get as much as you can now, or at least plan it so you can max out your system without replacing the memory you have now. (I know you know this)

I'm still kicking myself that I didn't fill up a few free desktops I got from work at their switch over. Going from 4GB to 8 or 16 now actually costs far more than just parting out the systems and moving on.

So take what KAC says for memory, but slower with better timings and double it. Or 4x it if you have the budget.

Just my 2 cents.

I doubt anyone wants to copy 50 Gs in one go. However, I do think if you want to cheap out then any Gen 3 SSD with 3-4 G read / 2.5-3 G write is good enough. My personal pick would be crucial P5 or something. Good drives, mostly reliable and quite in expensive.

There have been too many dead 980 Pro or overheating 980 Pro cases that I have read which deter me from Samsung this time. I am a huge proponent of Samsung drives but when an SSD dies you are really SOL. So yeah I didn’t risk it.

I'll have a chance later today to pick some parts off Newegg and give you links, going off the fact you are sticking with a 5900X.

No clue how you can call a case high airflow while putting glass panels in front of fans. That's some marketing stupidity.
