Best 55" or larger for Console Gaming?

My console gaming is currently done on a 24" Vizio POS. It sucks in every way possible so I'm going to do it right this time. My television stand can hold up to a 84" HDTV.

I've been paying attention to overall lag time and motion blur.

For lag time I'm looking at data here:
http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33199_7-57587317-221/game-mode-on-cnet-tests-tvs-for-input-lag/

For motion blur I'm looking here:
http://www.blurbusters.com/sony-motionflow-impulse-mode-reduces-motion-blur-without-interpolation/
http://www.blurbusters.com/new-sony-hdtvs-with-motionflow-impulse-sony-lightboost-equivalent/

completely eliminates motion blur during 60 fps @ 60 Hz. Try this setting with consoles, computers, emulators, and sports!

Given what I've seen from the above sites it looks like Sony LCD is the clear choice since it's the only set that can eliminate motion blur without artifacts. So that narrows it down to the follows sets...

Sony KDL-55W802A
Sony KDL-65W850A
Sony KDL-55W900A

I was shocked plasma seems to suck on lag and even some with motion blur?

Does anyone know of any other set with good lag and no motion blur like the Sony models above?

Have you ever actually seen Sony motionflow strobe? It's a flickery eyesore, gaming with that would cause headaches and nausea, yuk, at least my eyes don't like it at all! :p

Most Sony TV's use LG screens (IPS passive 3D LCD screens), aside from the triluminos W905 active 3D TV. I would go with the W905 or Samsung F8000 series, I game on a Samsung F7000 and it's fantastic with my PS4 and PC setup :)

I use a 55" LG LA620V I play both Wii U and PS3 on it, and I often use my PC on it too, for 3D gaming or the odd game that I want to play on the bigger screen.

I was expecting it to let me down in some way, but goddamn it's quality is amazing. I can't fault it on anything so far.

I have a Sony 46w905 and it is a great panel in every aspect. Strongly recommended. Lag or blur are for me not noticeable and IQ is just outstanding. I don't use motionflow but from what I read in Gaming mode using impulse it can go up to 30 ms if enabled, with no blur though.

The problem with the impulse mode is that reduces very strongly the brightness, for me to non usable levels if not in a dark room.

Agree 100% and my 46" 7000 series Samsung is also my desktop....

I looked at a 65W850A and when put into Motionflow Impulse I didn't notice any strobe effect. To me it looked like a CRT.

Impulse did dim the set but I thought it looked good. The triluminos stuff is in the W850A as well.

50ms vs 18ms sounds like a big jump in lag doesn't it? Isn't 30ms difference noticeable? Of course that is without Motionflow. I also read Sony pretty much destroyed Motionflow Impulse in a December firmware update, if so I'll mark it off my list if true.

I own a 65" VT25 Panasonic Plasma for my movie viewing and no consoles are on that. I hate judder and motion blur.

Costco has a ton of Samsung for sale there.. I will reconsider.

Out of curiosity I attached my desktop to the w905 and run the UFO motion tests at blurbusters. With motionflow off ghosting is easily recognizable in all tests. With impulse mode on ghosting disappears almost completely, some double image ghosting remains though (only perceivable with the UFO test). However, besides the dimming I could clearly perceive the flicker in this mode, so for me it's not an option.

All this of course at 60 Hz, I don't know how it will behave at 30 fps which many console games are locked at.

Judder is not a problem.

As for the input lag, it's not something I'm very sensitive to but I can tell the difference between this TV and my older one (a Sony Z5500). I've done some Bittrip Runner 2 gaming in both TV's and the difference is quite clear. That said, I owned the z5500 for four years and happily did my console gaming without throwing my gamepad at it because of the input lag.

I think that if you can perceive blur as clearly as you state, you should take a good look at the TVs in person before buying one, even test them if possible. This is quite a subjective matter and whatever others say it may not apply to you.

According to a poster at avsforum the December Sony firmware update ruined Motionflow Impulse and introduces artifacts. If this is true I'll be looking at Samsung...

I did look at motionflow impulse at a Best Buy yesterday but their source material is a joke. I did not notice any strobe or flicker but it was about a quarter less bright.

I cannot confirm the FW f@ckup. My TV is updated to the latest FW and the motion blur with impulse is gone, as I described in my previous post. Maybe it only affects the 4K models, I don't know, my w905a is fine.

I run my TV with backlight 4 (out of 10). If I switch impulse on I must turn the backlight to the max to compensate and my feeling is that even then the panel is dimmer than before. At night or in low light it could work but at daylight or in a reasonably lit room it's just too low for me.

As for the flicker, to me is even more obvious than the dimming. I must say, that I didn't know about it before testing it this morning, but again I don't use any Motionflow as I notice very easily the soap opera effect and find it very distracting. I catch flicker very easy too, it was the first reason for me to leave CRT monitors/TV's behind, so this impulse thing is a no go for me.

Why not move the plasma over for console duty and upgrade your movie TV?

I thought about that but figured I would wait for decent priced HDMI 2.0 65" 4K to come out. We are pretty happy with the VT25 for now.

I guess I could get something really cheap for a few years...

That's a 50" LCD with a full array backlight with local dimming. Odd to see that on a cheap set. Earlier versions of this was listed as a good gaming HDTV by IGN and CNET.

As an owner of both a G series Panasonic plasma and a Sony 850 Lcd set I can say the Sony is excellent for gaming, fantastic picture! The only thing the lcd lacks is viewing angle. Avoid plasma because of image retention alone

You have image retention on your Plasma?
I've had a 42" Panasonic PZ85U plasma for 5 years and it's not showing any sign of image retention.

Hmm, I've not noticed any issues with my KDL55.

Really only game using the Wii, and I have all the motion garbage turned off. Could be why. I would have no clue how anyone could ever watch any TV/Movie/Play a game with any of the post processing crap on on any tube.
