Assassin's Creed Odyssey

It does get repetitive and tedious especially if you aim to clear out forts and camps etc… if you just ignore that aspect you may just make it through.

Do the historical tour. It’s awesome if you’re into history.

Yep.

I'm gonna keep playing, hoping the game changes my mind but early impressions are meh. I just can't believe the enemy AI is still dogshit after this many AC releases. My concern is it will get very repetitive / tedious after a while, especially with how long this game is.
You will not like it and complain about it. I am surprised you are even trying it.
You didn’t like Horizon Zero Dawn which has far more engaging combat than any AC game. Why not play Elden Ring again which is what you really want to play.

I will likely just stick to main quests. If the game hooks me I'll do more optional stuff / exploration.

I've got 115 hours into Elden Ring. Already beat it and did a lot of the optional areas/bosses. I'll play it again at some point but I need a break from it.

I might like Odyssey. Going to give it a fair shot. I have enjoyed AC games in the past, I'm just a bit let down the combat wasn't more improved by now. Anyways the setting is really cool so it has that going for it.

It will. But still pretty fun exploration. Forbidden West is probably a better open world with less repetition. But if you want swords and shields stay away from tht one too. They all are very different than Elden Ring obviously. Trying to compare is futile and frustrating. If you can’t get out of the combat mode and shift to explorer, none will satisfy.

Souls games ruined 3rd person action gaming for me. Its awful. Unless a game has real deep and visceral combat I get bored very quickly. Latest one like that was HZD. I liked the story and setting but the combat felt so weak and shallow to me.

try games like devil may cry, or the newer god of war that released on pc not long ago. its still more arcadey, but its much more punishing for failure, and more tactical play.

if you dot mind mmos, the combat in black desert online is pretty excellent.

Thymesia releases in a couple of months, has a demo and is getting pretty decent reviews. Maybe the demo will hold you over? :p Because I understand the frustration….

The new GoW on PC I will definitely eventually get. But honestly I have never been a big GoW fan. They just don't do it for me. Same with Devil May Cry. Those games are too much flashy spectacle and not enough deep gameplay. I'll just wait until its really cheap and give it a shot. But these are the kinds of 3rd person action games I'm referring to when I say Souls games ruined me and I can't play them. The only other 3rd person action game series in recent memory I've enjoyed is Nioh, which of course is another Souls-like game.

I actually haven't played a Devil May Cry game since the PS2 versions. I have "DmC" on Steam, think I got it for free somehow. Been meaning to try it out.

MMOs are a hard pass for me. Too grindy, and just don't have the time to invest.

Thymesia is a game I have wish-listed. My thoughts of it is its definitely a wait a see after release, rather than a day one purchase. Might be good or even great, but I don't have confidence in it yet. Need to see more gameplay videos from actual Souls-like players.

However, that is really cool it has a demo. They were probably doing that for people like me lol. I may D/L to give it a shot soon.

i agree about the older gow games, but saying dmc has not enough deep gameplay is like saying street fighter is just about mashing buttons :D

Well I am also kind of an RPG stats and loot nerd, which is a big part of why I love Souls games and that's included in the "deep gameplay" description.

I really enjoy games where you can have seemingly limitless different character build possibilities and I like complexity in my RPG stats mechanics. I don't believe DMC is really like that, or am I wrong?

The last GoW game is nothing like the arcade style button mashing visual spectacle of the previous games, it's much more closer to a Souls-like in both combat and exploration. It's a fantastic game any Souls fan would enjoy.

I did play it with kb/m though, to make aiming throwables easier.

God of war is nothing like a stupid souls game. Because GOW is dope af.
Same for Ass Creed. Comparing these games is like comparing panties and boxers. It doesn’t make sense.

However, Valhalla might be the worst out of the latest Ass Creed Trilogy. As it doesn’t really have the awe inspiring locations of Egypt in Origins and Greece in Odyssey. However, that is my opinion. Gameplay is a hit or miss also compared to previous two. I know I spent most time in Odyssey and it’s expansions which I loved as it’s gameplay was dope af. Valhalla though I didn’t do any expansions and abandoned the game once I finished the story.

Seconded.

Cool, good to know thanks.

They are comparable, because its still 3rd person melee combat. I don't make these comparisons to other genres like shooters for example. Souls-like games have set the new standard for this gameplay style over the past decade. You and everyone else knows it, but just don't want to admit it because you suck at the games.;)

I'm not looking to get into a school yard pissing match about what's the better game. But I do feel I need to clarify.

I was not simply trying to say "Souls combat is better than AC." They can absolutely both exist and be enjoyable, hence why I am playing AC. All I was saying is Souls games have ruined my enjoyment of other 3rd person melee action games. Maybe you can't relate to this because you don't like Souls. Or maybe its just me, and I am too picky. But it is what it is.

After playing Souls games most other games of this type just feel weak. I'm not the only one who feels this way either. Many others do once they get into Souls games. As for AC, I have separate criticisms of the combat that have nothing to do with comparisons to Souls. I had not played an AC game since Black Flag I believe, and I was hoping they had done more to improve the feel of the combat and enemy AI since then. I'm only in the early game of Odyssey, but so far it feels mostly the same at its core.

I think souls-combat is unsuitable for fast weapons though, for me it only feels right when dealing with slower, heavier weapons.

Souls game are only combat. So they better be good at it. And they are. Open world games like Odyssey are about discovery and exploration. They are not designed to stop you from progressing. They are designed for you to explore more and more. Souls games are more filler..filler..boss battle…repeat. They do an amazing job with both filler and boss battle combat to keep it varied and challenging. But progression can be slow. Mastering combat and making your way through the content is very satisfying. But it is basically the same formula over and over. They do amazing work on settings and enemies. But the formula is basically the same over and over. This is a good thing if the goal is to master the combat mechanics. That was one of my complaints with Forbidden West is they gave you 99 different ways to attack every enemy. How do you master anything with so many options?

The big difference is what is driving progression in the game. Souls is about getting better and better to take on tougher enemies. Games like Odyssey is about a varied experience and exploration. There really isn’t a need to create a “build” as weapons and strategies can vary and be interchangeable throughout the game. But, the combat must be easier for this to work. That’s the part you won’t like as it is 180 degrees opposite of souls games.

I feel the opposite. Especially with the changes they made to bosses in Elden Ring slower heavy weapons have become too tough to use for me. But it comes down to personal preference, which is another great thijng about those games. There's so many build styles to suit different players. Have you tried powerstancing curved swords or katanas?

Also, I am not talking about just From Soft's games. Team Ninja's Nioh series is the new gold standard for combat IMO.
