I just received an AOPEN AX4R+ and have the _exact_ same problem so it's not specific to the ASUS. Tried every available setting in the Bios and Smartgart tab to no avail. The 9700 is new as well, V1.4 so it's supposed to be fully 8x compatible.

Thank you DSOTM!

Thank you DSOTM!

Repling to Slovenly: Don't know this model, but I believe it is an AGP 8x one. Maybe this is the reaason and not the ASUS or the Gigabytes or the Intel E7205.

Now for DSOTM: We appreciate very much what you did for us.
I know you have done allready too much, but I would like to ask a last favor: COuld you please give us the numbers?
I mean, driver versions, BIOS ver/rev, etc.

Thank you very much.

PS> Since The last change (you can read prev posts) I have a very stable Desktop. No freezes, no crashes, no hangs, nothing.
Haven't test it though in games.

The AOPEN is a GB motherboard. I too suspect that it has to do with the fast writes option. When I clocked the AGP bus to > 69mhz I would get lockups & the 640x480 problem. The lockups stopped if I used the default 66.5mhz. The 640x480 problem seemed to stop when I disabled fast writes. Unfortunately the AOPEN bios does not allow you to change the AGP to 4x.

What this meant to me was that I pretty much had to run everything at default speeds with FW disabled to get a stable system. No OC'ing. If ATI can address the FW problem I'll probably give the MB another go. Until then I'm back on my ASUS P4T533-C which runs flawlessly with the 9700 at 75mhx AGP bus.

We'll have to see if ATI does anything about this when more and more people ancounter this problem.

Hah this is really weird I am having this problem as well, heres the thing though, I have a Asus A7V8X. Thats not even a intel chipset. I have been crashing them coming back at 640 * 480 but its at 8 bit color for me as well, been happening on the desktop especially when playing divx movies, as well as in games which the system doesnt always recover from, I even RMA'd my card because I hadnt seen this thread yet. I have had the card (well the old one) for 3 months and it never did this so I dont know whats new now, (mabye the cat 3s?)

I did fix it though, I have been running at 166 fsb for a few months now so I could keep my AGP bus un-overclocked with the 1/5th divider. I noticed when I went to 133 mhz the problem was gone but that didnt seem like an acceptable solution to me, so I bumped the FSB to 167 and all the problems are gone, I suspect what was happening was just some little tiny error that only happens at that particular speed.

WOOT WOOT!!!!!

No more crashes, all i did was to change the fsb down one and it worked. I have had no crashed, in desktop or games for over 24 hours now.

I can run 3d mark and it got 17234 in it as well :)

THIS IS SO SWEET!!!!

oh yeah my settings :

Write Combining off
D3D Vsync wait OFF
Open GL Vsync wait OFF

the above didnt work until i also put my CPU fsb down 1 MHZ!!

maybe try put it down or up 1 mhz, i dont know why but it fixed it :)

thats great to hear but now my system just took 3 tries to get into windows without crashing, I dont know what the heck is going on, this system has been fine for the last 3 months and nothing is ever overclocked execpt the FSB but the motherboard can handle that (its in spec for the mobo) and the cpu has the multiplier lowered so its running stock speed, just a higher FSB.

Diabled fast writes on Friday and system has had no crashes or freezes. Played UT2003 and AVP primal hunt for a number of hours with no problems.

Does fast writes effect performace much ? Not tried any bench marks, what would be the best to try. Thnx

I guess as this problem is occuring with so many MB and chipsets it must be a 9700 APG timing issue or a ATI driver issue.

I seem to have cracked the problem with my P4G8X and the ATI Pro 9700, UT2003 seems stable now and 3DMark 2001 runs all tests without freezing any more. All I have changed is the AGP/PCI Frequency Setting within the advanced bios settings from Auto to Manual and used the default AGP/PCI Frequency setting of 66.66/33.33. This even allows me to run with the ATI Smartgart set to on.

Hi

The new catalyst drivers 3.1 (7.83) are out. Has any one tried yet to see if any of the problems go away?

Dnld them, but I will check at noon.
Although ATI at the release notes, doesn't say anything about fast writes etc. On the other hand, if you read the posts on the Official Thread for Catalyst 3.1 you will see that changed SMARTGUARD settings to auto...
Don't know how this will behave...

Unfortunatelly...

Unfortunatelly...

I was saying the my desktop with 3.1 is very stable. Had no problems, crashes, 640x480's, nothing. And it is still like that.
BUT, gaming is another issue...
Yesterday I installed MS Combat Flight Simulator 3...
That's it. Couldn't even start a mission... It constantly freeze with sound still playing after just a few seconds in the game.
The only thing that worked was that I got back to 6.13 drivers from Gigabyte's CD and managed to play a mission, although, when I tried to quit the game, after I pressed 'yes' at the last 'are you sure' question, it did it again :(
I am this close to buy a GeForceFX and a pair of earplugs.

I am aboslutley sick of this!!!

YOU think ati would adress these issues ..

Seriously when you buy a Nvidia built card you plug it in and install the drivers. NO ****ing around with all this AA and Write combining crap.

i wonder if ATI would listen to us and actually incorporate a solution into the drivers. As far as i see this new catalyst is a way to scoring a few extra 3dmark points.

BUT ****ED!! for everything ELSE!!!

i agree with you wizard, i am so close to getting a FX. ...

or even buying a mac..

flaming SPARTAN!!!

What revision is your guy's Asus mobo?? I have yet to put mine together. I have rev 1.02 was just wonderering if you guys had an earlier rev.???

i will try with wcpredit and wpcrset to change the register to fix the errata of the intel agp.i have the same problem as you all have, but i run stable since i have switched to uscw and turned off fastwrites.i an now at 180fsb and i always try for more.

Whats your Rev No.????

Two of my buddies have Rev 1.01 and they have problems also. Since I have very little time lately to install mine I was wondering if peeps with Rev.1.02 where also having problems with the 9700.

I have two P4G8X (borh rev 1.02).
ATI 9700 Pro. Rev 3.0

And, Yes , the problems remains.

Regards.

i dont know what ver i have, and it is difficult for me to open the case( i know how to, but it is the place i am at , i have no room for opening etc. ). i run now at 183 fsb and i was stable at 185. anyway the steps that i did to make my system stable was...
1) disable fastwrites
2) enable delayed transaction
3) at the bios i choose ucsw and not uc
4) at the trablleshooting tab at the display properties disable the " enable write combining ".
5) updated the bios at the 1004.004 ( beta for the p4g8x )
6) disable the devices that i do not use ( 2 serial, 1 parallel,firewire,sound as i have 2 pci soundcards )

as for the memory i am running at 2.5-3-3-7 as the bios has a bug and cannot set the timmings.only in the widows environment i use the wpcrset to set the registers

and now i am rock stable, tested with 3 hours unreal 2, and over 4 hours nfs hot pursuit 2.
