9700 Pro returns to 640x480x4 in WinXP

I am having this problem. I just got an Asus P4G8X Deluxe mb that supports AGP 8x.
While working with anything, just out of the blue, system returns to 640x480x4bit mode, reports that it has encountered a problem with the a device and recomends to restart.
After restarting, boots normaly and after finishing loading devices and start up programs, it reports that the error was from the Display Adapter.
I tried many drivers but no difference...(wxp-w2k-radeon-6-13-10-6218-efg.exe, wxp-w2k-radeon-7-81-021218a-007192c-efg.exe, 7.77 from Gigabyte, 7.79 from Gigabyte)
I am using WinXP Pro SP1.
All the tests for the drivers were done with AGP 8x setting.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Yeap...

Yeap...

Yeap. It was one of the first thing I installed. Actualy before I installed the drivers...
I don't know if this can be the reason

Unfortunately, there´s no solution for this issue yet.
I´ve tried everything you can imagine (4X, USWC, AGP voltage...), but when I attempt to play any 3D game, the computer freezes and return to that resolution.
The thing is that if you install W XP there is not a single problem, these begin when the Catalyst drivers are installed (no matter which version).
My solution: ATI 9700 Pro is installed in my INTEL D845PEBT2 and works like a dream, and my GeForce TI 4600 in the P4G8X, and works very well, too; it´s a little dissapointing, but I don´t know if it is a problem from ASUS or from ATI.
We´ll wait...

Thanx

Thanx

I have to admit that since I installed the drivers from Gigabyte (7.79) I had no problems. On the other hand, I can't be totaly sure about this, because I hadn't work too many hours or too extensive (gaming etc.).
I will test it on the weekend, and if I am satisfied from the results, I will post a reply on Monday.

Sorry..., writtinig in shaky English...
I am having same problem. I"ve tried below things.

1. driver version(now 7193c)
2. install DX9
3. VGA bios update (8.003 -> 8.004)
4. M/B bios [AGP Apature Size Setting] 64MB(be better than 128 or 256MB)

I am testng this settings. This problem do not happened
up to now. Please, try [AGP Apature Size Setting].

Thanx for the tip.
Now I will try to test it with Aperture size 256 that I have, and if it fails the testing, I 'll have in mind to set it to a lower value.

make sure nothing is overclocked, if you have two or more memory modules try changing the slots they are in around. if nothing else works underclock the card with a tweaker until a fix to the problem is issued. Underclocking the card always fixes the lockups, as well as changing mobos to one that the R9700 likes. I tried both and they both work good.

This is silly!!!

This is silly!!!

I can't understand what is going on...
While playing high demanding games (1280x1024x32, 4xAA, 8xAF) I just had one lockup, which is we could say normal after 3-4 hours.
I have this thing (Return to 640x480x4) while SURFING THE WEB!!!
Now I really noticed that because it happend 3 times in a row!

Anybody with any idea???

Thanx

Hey, maybe this will help, from Hardocp review of the board:

"The board was a tremendous pain to get stable with our Radeon 9700. It ended up being as simple as changing our "UC" setting to "USCW" in the BIOS. This has some control over video memory as previously stated in the BIOS section. We were having constant crashes in CCWinstone and toggling to USCW solved all of our issues with that. We have played with this BIOS setting before and never have seen a significant difference with it set one way or another. "

Hi

Does anyone have an update on these problems. I have built my system and get the same problems. I am running all the latest drivers. Now trying under w2k-sp3 which is giving me less problems.

Asus P4G8X delux, Saphire RadPro 9700,P4 3G, 1GB Corsair 3200DDR, 120GBMaxpus9, Liteon DVD, Pioneer A05DVDwriter, qtec400WPsu

Thanks

Finally...(?)

Finally...(?)

After I checked Microsoft's link, I have been able to run very stable now.
The settings are:
Win XP Pro SP1
DX 9.0
BIOS -> USCW Mode, AGP 8x
Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot >
a. Write Combining is NOT checked
b. Hardware acceleration is set to FULL
Driver Version is Gigabyte's 7.79 (6.13.10.6143)

I had no crash today while surfing nor while gamming.

I am still though waiting for an answer from ASUS, but they are closed for Boudist new year untill Feb 7, 2003

Will post back then if anything is changed.

Thanx everybody

Actualy I am not sure about FastWrites because the driver I installed changed every menu in Greek Language and I am not sure for the translation...
(They should put an option for that grrrrrr :( )
If it is here: Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > SmartGart
and it is the option under AGP speed which can be enabled, or disabled, then Yes it IS ENABLED.

Ah, so my board isn't defect....

Today after weeks of waiting I finally got my Club-3d 9700, and I am having the exact same problem... It's very frustrating because I want to keep this board, no nVidia please!!

I will try the above mentiond as well as conduct my own tests :P

Will post here if I come up with something interesting.

Cheers,
Acoustic.

I have a MB with SiS 648 chip BTW.

S**T!!!

S**T!!!

Unfortunately just happend again. :(
The good news is that I think it is a hardware conflict problem...
It did't happend while surfing the web as I said before, but while opening the Drives tree from the search. So I believe it happened while searching for the available drives.
This is a conflict or a chipset/display driver problem.
Intel says to do this:
"
2. AGP Prefetch Cache Must Be Disabled
Problem: System hangs can occur during AGP transactions when the AGP Prefetcher is enabled.
Implication: System hang.
Workaround: Disable AGP Prefetch Cache by clearing bit 0 of AGP Miscellaneous Register (Device 1 Function 0
Offset A0-A3h).
Status: No fix planned for this erratum. System performance is not affected by this erratum.
"

Does anyone know how to do this???
Thanx

Yes thats fast writes enabled then. I saw another tread suggesting to disable fast writes. I went back and triew XP againg last night (really want hyperthreading) and ended up with a fairly stable system. Just one crash while watching a Divx movie and advusting a filter property at the same time.
Not sure about the AGP issue but will post if I find out.

Asus AP4GX Delux

Saphire 9700
2 x MaxtorPlus9 120GB
Lite On 16X DVD (Master)
Pioneer A05 (Slave)
XP Pro, SP1
Intel Application Accelerator 2.3beta
Catalyst 3.0 Drivers
DX 8.1

I also having crashes like these. After a crash my pc is running in the same resolution 640x480x4bit. When I reboot everthing is running as normal in 1280x1024x32bit.
It happens always when I try to play a *.MPG or a divx encoded *.AVI movie.
I'm not sure, but I think that I'm having these crashes after the installation of DX9.0 + CAT3.0 drivers.
I hope this problem will be solved with the next catalyst driver.
