3D TV goes the way of the dodo

From wiki:

  • The "golden era" (1952–1954)
  • Revival (1960–1984) in single strip format
  • Rebirth of 3D (1985–2003)
  • Mainstream resurgence (2003–present)

Full disclosure: Have never seen a mainstream movie in the theater in 3-D. Seen a few at iMax. Don't have a 3-D capable TV. Only movie I've seen in 3-D in a home setting was Star Trek Into Darkness, at my brother-in-law's house. Was good, but the wow factor wore off pretty quick.
That wiki list is odd. According to that list there was no gap between 1960 to present. That is 100% not correct. 3D was pretty much totally dead in the 1980s and 1990s.

Passive makes sense for LCD and OLED(especially as we get as dense as 4k). But for Plasma the active 3D is/was awesome.
Yes my 65" Panasonic VT25 had good 3D. I gave my 6 pair of active glasses and my VT25 to my sister and they are now enjoying it.

You must have forgotten such gems as Jaws 3D and Friday the 13th 3D.

Nope. People seem to be getting 3D in your home mixed up with 3D in the theater.

Cinema audiences could wear disposable cardboard polarized 3D glasses to create the illusion that elements penetrate the screen.[2] Several shots and sequences were designed to utilise the effect, such as the shark's destruction. Since 3D was ineffective in home viewing until the advent of 3D televisions in the late 2000s, the alternative title Jaws III is used for television broadcasts, VHS and DVD.[1]
This thread is about 3D TV being dead - home viewing. I don't think it is dead in the box office is it? I recall some Red and Blue glasses in the past but I think that was in the 1950.. for really crappy 3D TV.

No, you seem to be confusing yourself when you said 3D was totally dead in the 80's and 90's. That is patently false as the 3D "renaissance" occured in the 80's, with some examples as I showed.

3D of those eras didn't depend on specialized TV's. All you needed was anaglyph glasses or those weird dark gray glasses.

All throughout the 80's there were 3D movie promotions where you would go out get some 3D glasses (usually coupled with a sponsored product) for something showing on prime time, and watch it on your regular television.

So please don't confuse home theatre active/passive 3D with cinema 3D, as cinema 3D has been going on since the 1950's (or even earlier, not sure), and only recently did technology allow cinema 3D to be experienced in the home without going anaglyph.

At home it was called Jaws III and not Jaws 3D. There were some 3D shows on television with red blue glasses but only a handful.

Again, I'm only talking about home use like this thread. Clearly 3D is not dead at the theater.

I have had a 3D TV for about 2 years now.
Number of movies watched in 3D = 0.
Number of games played in 3D = 0.

Great feature. Miss it already :bleh:
