Starfield - futuristic space exploration sci-fi RPG from Bethesda

Optimization guide from HUB, also some FSR 2 critique.

I think it is fair to say that FSR isn't ready to be the sole upscaler for a game, as it can only sort of hang with DLSS at 4k.

Yeah it's not quite there yet.

Been using this DLSS mod that works great. Tried two different mods, but found this one doesn't interfere with Reshade. Note you will need Reshade in conjunction with DLSS for sharpening.

id rather be able to remove the filters completely, but thanks for the mod link. will grab it when i eventually get the game. hate their sci fi lighting filters.

So it appears that 1st person view isn't a real 1st person view because it's just the 2nd zoom of fov. And you can still see your character which breaks the immersion of a real 1st person view imo. Let me know if my line of reasoning is off.

So, having played the game for a while now all the flaws are starting to become clear.
- Main character is mute. 2023 and they couldn't even bother to have 2 people voice the lines for the main character.
- Speaking of which the dialog is super cringe and the fact that you can pursuade people literally to shoot themselves in the face in 2 attempts is ..
- Gamebryo. People float around, run into walls, go through walls, all the same garbage from games like Skyrim are still there with just a fresh coat of paint.
- Loading screens everywhere. Seems to be limited to about 8-10GB of memory usage and doesn't really seem to cache very effectively.
- No atmospheric flying
- No 21:9 or any other ultra wide support

The only saving grace is that it can be fun at times. 6 or 7 out of 10 with leaning towards 6 due to all the issues.

Bonus for having Toufexis as a voice actor.

Let me rephrase the 21:9 support, the animations (the unity-starfield thingies) and menus are 16:9 only.

so? it seems like it's only worth getting this at the earliest on this year winter sale where mods would be more mature?

I'd say that if you like the BGS games, you will like starfield, because they made another one of those.

I started playing it on the shitbox. Seems to run like crap and not even 30 fps. However, didn’t face any bugs yet. Got to a planet where I need to deal with some pirates. Will probably end up killing everyone.

The game actually runs a really consistent 30FPS on the Series consoles. You're probably just used to higher framerates on PC so it feels sluggish. Most everyone seems to really be enjoying the game, especially the more they play it.

Playing Game Pass version on an ssd, I'm capping the game at 65fps through nvcp on a 4080, so far it feels pretty smooth considering nv cards are left in the dust in this title. Aside from disappointing performance, atm I can't bother listening to any of the widespread criticism which sounds a lot like excessive whining to me. People staring at walls in a game while reading the fps counter should change hobby imo. Sure the game has flaws and we have the right to pretend fixes, but I think Starfield is absolute dope and can see myself sinking many hours in it. It ticks all the right boxes for a space freak such as myself, some of the mechanics look sick (enemy ship boarding!), and the ship editor is worth alone the price of admission. I'm hoping for optimizations, fixes and Nvidia drivers in the coming months.

that seems a bit harsh, why do you think it's not worth more than that?
These are 100% subjective annoyances:

- Loading screens, ALL the time everywhere. Enter ship, loading screen. Fly to another system, loading screen. Land, loading screen. Exit ship, loading screen. Enter a building with ONE ROOM, loading screen.
- Same engine as previous games, with almost all the same issues. People floating around, getting stuck on things and so forth.
- Planets have invisible walls. Want to travel around? That's a nope. Wanna fly your COOL spaceship around? No you don't, because the engine can't take it.
- Skill system is moronic - it's essentially built to make you grind in a single player game. Fabulous stuff. Everything is a grind.
- Engine sucks. It sucks. It fucking sucks. It's garbage.

I agree some of my issues are nitpicking but it's 2023 and it's a 70€ game - we as gamers should demand more for this price.

Im in the same boat. Except, im really turned off by the engine, to even bother buying the game. Gonna enjoy it when its 70% off i think. May even have some expansions by then.

At this point I'd rather see BGS sticking with their clunky engine, at least the game is playable on day one unlike most recent unreal engine powered titles.

If other AAA-devs struggle with UE, what would happen if BGS had a go at it, a game that runs at a negative frame rate with stutters that lasts for months?

I am enjoying this game a bit. Story is whatever and some of the missions that get added are meh as well. However, I like the feel of the world etc. I haven’t finished a Fallout game since 3 so if I finish this it would be grand. The gunplay is a joke and most of weapons feel the same thus far. However, I am only level 7 so quick to judge. Already spent 7 hours on this over the weekend which is not normal. They must’ve done something right.

Starfield Frame Generation - Replacing FSR2 with DLSS-G
https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/761

Free alternative to the PureDark mod. This is not a cracked version of Puredarks mod

Updated.

  • Version 1.1.0
    • Added a multitude of safeguards to prevent random crashing, especially around transitions and the menu.
    • Added executable detection to support both Steam and Xbox versions in a single mod
    • Added checks to ensure the required DLSS DLLs are present in the 'streamline' folder. If they are not present, a message box will be shown
    • Added checks to the used color space to notify the user if they have an incompatible format selected (e.g. by using NativeHDR in scRGB mode)
    • Added a new config setting 'dynamicResolutionEnabled' to potentially improve image quality when dynamic resolution is disabled ingame
    • Added a hotkey (F12) to toggle Frame Generation on or off during gameplay
