Which Ryzen 5000 series to end off with?

I would like to upgrade my CPU one more time before having to change motherboards. The 3 options i am mulling over are:
Ryzen 7 5800X
Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Ryzen 9 5900X

The main reasons for each are:
-5800X is the cheapest out of the bunch by a fair margin.
-5800X3D continues to be one of the best gaming CPU's
-5900X has more cores than the other 2 (12/24 vs 8/16)

As of right now te 5800X3d and the 5900x are within 20 dollars of each other so im debating whether to just max out the gaming performance on AM4 or if having a few more cores is more beneficial. Obviously the 5800X would be the ideal choice if i just wanted to keep the budget low.

Im not gonna upgrade yet but i want to get into one of these before they go EoL (which i suspect might be sometime soon)

So which way would you go?

6 core 5600X3D has been rumored so Id wait if bang for your buck is paramount.

5800X3D. Punches way above its weight and will knock your socks off. Forget 6 core processors in 2023 ffs.
Also cheap as chips right now.
I moved from 5900X to a 5800X3D. No regrets!

Go for the x3d, unless you are doing real work, you are never going to benefit from those extra cores.

OK so revisiting this, i will definitely end this platform with a 5800X3D whenever that time comes. If more cores become more of a thing in the future, it'll likely require a new platform anyways so....i'll deal with it then. I just got one more thing to ask. My current setup uses 2x8GB 2666mhz ram..... I'd also like to bump that up to 32GB but i have not been able to find out much about how an 5800X3D performs with the somewhat slower memory. I read that CPU doesnt really require fast or fancy ram due to the large cache....but they're usually talking about 3200mhz ram vs something faster. If the scaling is the same downwards then perhaps i could get away with just buying an extra 2x8gb of 3200ram or something (would obviously just run at 2666...i honestly don't know if my ram can overclock to 3200...it was a "value" level ram so i dont think it could do it reliably), rather than just replacing the whole thing with a 2x16gb @ 3200mhz (or have 48gb @ 2666mhz). Anyone happen to know or direct me somewhere that can see how the memory scale below the 3200mhz officiially supported speed?

Get 2x16 3600 C16 or lower ram. I went from C16 to C14 and didn’t get any material improvement except some penis marks here and there.

Ram speeds depend on your mobo so if an x370 likely you're stuck with 3200 stable. I did run 3433 for a while but it was crashing couple times a month... Not sure what x400 can do but x500 mobos can do 3600 easy which is the sweet spot. Lots of kits tho use same ram and you see them with just different cas like a 3200 cas 16 is sold as 3600 cas 18.... Not that there is big price diff often between 3200 and 3600. If your 2666 is cas 14 try cas 16 at 3200. With x3d ram isnt as important so even cas 18 will be fine if you dont want to have to buy new ram. Im running 4x16 cas 18 3200 fine on x370. I think you would get some gains from 2666 to 3200, above that its marginal on x3d for games FWIR.

Didn’t realize you were running the old mobo. Find the ram that is widely supported by your mobo. 2666 to 3200/3600 will make a difference that would be noticeable.

Hmm after some thought, i think I'll get a 32gb @ 3200mhz kit, run it in the system as 48gb of ram @ 2666mhz with the 2600x (just read the old CPU supports up to 2933...and gets wonky with speeds higher than that). Then when the time comes, upgrade to the 5800X3D and use 32gb @ 3200mhz ram. Keep the 2600X + 16gb @ 2666mhz for some secondary build or sell it off (might swap out the i7 3770 i have for the living room PC to the ryzen 2600X....)

How is that 5800x3d holding up? What made you change the 5900x?

I have a similar dilemma coming from a 2700x and I was thinking of the 5800x - 5800x3d or the 5900x as my last AM4 CPU :D

I never had the 5900x but the 5800x3d, upgrading from a 1700x, is plenty good enough if gaming is your main concern. I think I can hold off on the next upgrade when AM6 is out. Probably 4 years or so from now. I can see one more mid range gpu upgrade on the radeon 7800xt before that on this current system. While we are seeing some cpu limited games (tho overall fps at the cpu limit is ample) most of the testing done is on top end gpus like the 4090 at low settings.

pax I'm so sorry I quoted the wrong post ;) I meant to ask KAC the question :D KAC was the difference really worth the change? I'm not sure what to do ?

For me 5900x to 5800x3d was worth the difference. I paid maybe 30 bucks out of pocket for the swap. That’s like a McD meal.

As for 5800x3d to 7800x3d worth the upgrade? Not really, not for me. Most of games I play feel the same. There are only a handful games that have currently shown better performance with a 7800x3d. Maybe Starfield, Spiderman remastered and Hogwarts legacy. Others at 4K run the same for me.

I would totally urge anyone on AM4 to get a 5800x3d. Totally worth the boners.

Brilliant thank you ;) That's what we love to hear! I'm still on the fence because my trusty old 2700x plays everything I currently have fine and I'm stingy as hell :D It's paired with a 6800XT Nitro+ which probably helps.

The pc gets used for all sorts of thing that's why I wondered about the 5900x, I do play a few games on and off like the witcher 3 /fortnite /minecraft /guild wars 1-2 /age of empires, all sorts really and anything new that pops up like hogwarts legacy recently and they all do play fine I just have the itch to upgrade.

There's only so many reviews to read and benchmarks and person can watch before it'll drive them crazy! so if I find a good enough deal I'll snap up a 5900x or a 5800x3d ! I think those are the two contenders.
