Which do you think is faster

I found a bunch of old junk and put together another box. The CPU was a celeronii 600. The only thing I had to buy was a motherboard. I bought an abit and was surprised to find I could run the cpu at 900 easily. I may get higher, havent even tried yet. My question, I have an athlon 700 sitting in the corner running as my ftp/web/proxy/whatever server. I have an regular machine that I use for everyday and gaming(athlon 1000/radeon). I want to use one of the other machines as a second gaming box for when people come over. Which do you think would be a faster gaming box, the celeron 900 or the athlon 700? I know the athlon is 200mhz slower but the chips seem to really be faster. I don't want to configure this new box to replace all the things the other box is doing and install and configure all three nics and what not if it is not worth the effort. Thanks.

Likely the Athlon (T-Bird?) because it has a much faster bus speed versus the Celeron's bus speed of 66MHz in your case.
Celeron isn't very good for games anyway, even for a value processor.
Games like memory bandwidth now.

Athlon is better for gaming over celeron because it has bigger and better cache and FSB speed. However, an overclocked celeron is good because if you run it +100mhz FSB, it is essentially a slightly crippled PIII so that aint bad. Still, the Athlon would be better yes.

Side note: I don't think you should overclock the celeron too much (if at all) if you decide to make it your server system you mentioned. You'll probably want something like that running 24-7 so I would imagine you want reliability and longevity for it.

I agree on the 24/7 issue. When I swap the machines out and make the celeron the serve it will be at default speed. That does show how well the Athlon holds up though, it was originally a 500, OCed it to 700 with a GFD and it has been running sitting in the corner since february or march of 2000. I opened it up once and cleaned out the dust, other than that it has been fine.
