Visual Studio 6.0 Random Lockups.

I have a question about Visual Studio 6. I just got it off a friend and suddenly my computer randomly resets itself and I occasionally lose control of the mouse and/or keyboard. These problems are more than just a little disconcerting... has anyone else experienced this or encountered a fix?

Oh yeah, I've tried removing the MDM from my startup (using msconfig), and that didn't seem to make a difference. I'm not running any TSRs or spyware. CTRL-ALT-DEL at boot reveals only three tasks: Explorer, Systray, and Mdm.
 
Actually, oddly enough, it may have been my mouse causing the problem. Changing it fixed the problem, at any rate. I don't why the system would be crashable from a malfunctioning mouse...

Odder still that it's a retail MS Intellimouse not three years old.
