Video Conversion Programs

I have been away from the video conversion scene for years. What is the new must have program for these type of things?

I am trying to convert a 10GB video file down to about 4GB (**** fat32). I want to convert it as fast as possible. Quality of output is not a big concern.

What is recommended?

Handbrake .. plain and simple. I think there is gpgpu (OpenCL/Cuda) support or was coming last I read in forums.

Another vote for Handbrake, hands down. It's the only encoding program I know that does the wonderful CQR video encoding. For web/media use I actually export to an intermediate DNxHD out of premiere/after effects and use Handbrake for the final output because the quality/size is unmatched.

I use TEncoder. I think I tried handbrake before. I thought it was a pain to use.
There are way too many settings to look at. I like TEncoder's UI better.:bleh:

Handbrake can be super quick and easy for straight up conversions. Literally all you have to do is choose your source file, set your file destination, and hit go. The default normal profile is excellent and honestly should create compact files that play on anything that's not a 90's dvd player. All the other stuff is for tweaking and dvd/bluray ripping.

I just tried Handbrake and the converted video had brightness cranked up, yet I cannot see that in the configuration settings anywhere? Any ideas?

I use avidemux, which does require a bit of messing about to get it how you like it. But I like the settings it offers, can set the I-frames so there is less seeking delay. Can add filters and trim/crop really easily. It has some default presets that will probably do the job.

That's odd, There are not many reports of that, and the ones that do are usually some odd codec or malformed video of the source file. Do you have small source and output samples you can upload?

I ended up deciding to split the files using something called avidemux or something like that. No reencoding. Took two minutes. Only downside was that it refused to split the last 40 minutes of the 2 hour video.

I see nutcrakr suggested it  why did it act up like that? :(

For the future will try teencoder and handbrake. Will look at nero too!

Any love for SUPER encoder?

Haven't used SUPER for ages, clogged up with adware last time I tried it. Was good back in the day

Not sure why it acted up, I only ever encode vids. Did you use the 64 bit or 32 bit version?

Non copy protected discs only. The good news is that there are programs that can decode them on the fly, letting ANY capable encoder/ripper to rip commercial discs, for backup purposes of course.

Note that Handbrake works wonderfully at this in conjunction with AnyDVDHD.

I felt like I made a shitty purchase buying a blu-ray drive for the pc. I can't even watch Blu-ray discs on it without shelling out at the very least $50 more. And the slysoft ( i used the trial before and love it) requires over 100 euro for lifetime updates.

I used 64 bits. Maybe 32 bits is less ****y.

When I was downloading some encoding programs. They really use some sneaky tactics to get you to install crap. They disguise as an agree/disagree user agreement disclaimer. It takes two seconds of reading to figure out it is junk, but it is habit sometimes to assume it is the EULA for the program you wanted. Some had like 5 or 6 of them bundled into one.

Yeah, I thought it would be great to pick up a player for my PC, but it's kind of a pain that they basically don't let you do anything with it.

I did manage to pick up a copy of ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre for only $30 at Newegg. So it wasn't too steep to get software. But still, considering I spent about $50 for the drive, it's a lot.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Newegg has it available right now.

One note about handbrake. If you are using a quicksync enabled processor, make sure you use it. It will literally triple you encoding time and use a lot less power.

Note on the quicksync, you must have onboard graphics on the motherboard, not just a capable processor. That will leave some of us who opted for a pure performance motherboard SOL.

WHY would anyone want to TRIPLE their encoding TIME ??
:-) :-) :-)

Where I buy my drives, (Micro Center) they provide installation discs for free with any purchase of a drive. I bought my OEM LG Blu-Ray drive/burner there and got the free disc that provides ability to watch any Blu-Ray movie. No additional purchase necessary.
