my old rig is toast Phenom 2 x6 1100t with a amd 6950 2gig vid card.
i am up grading to a i7 6700k with a fury x. how big of a difference should i expect to notice? i am actually pretty excited about the upgrade.

I'd toss in a SSD for a boot drive.

On most stuff (web browsing, office, etc.) it should only be a little boost (1/2 second vs 1/10 second). Gaming will depend if you stay at 1080 or you bump up. That said you should be looking at 3x the frame rates if you keep all the settings the same. But why bother, max all the settings and enjoy the game.

Toast as in underperforming or toast as in the system got fried?

My rig is phenom 2 965 with good perf on radeon 290 but right now games crash on it... it was solid until the holidays but shortly in January things started getting flaky and Ive no idea why... there are no crash reports after the rig freezes and I have to press reset. Im wondering if the mobo/cpu are dying.

Crashing as in games giving me the bsod. It's probably the age of my system.
Also have a Samsung 512 ssd for this also. I don't upgrade hardware very often so I figure this should last a while.

Could be dust clogging your cpu in gpu on your old system. A good cleanout might get it stable again if you want reuse it.
Your new system should almost be a night and day difference in speed.

Nope, clean as a whistle. It's time for the new rig anyways. Parts are on the way. I can't wait!

Just wondering did you try a win 10 reset or format/reinstall. If I cant my own to stabilize Ill do that as a last resort. Cant go back to 8.1 that was was nuked by win 10 a month after I upgraded.

most of the error msgs indicates hardware issues (motherboard) but i admit if i wish i had stayed with win 7 with my old rig. the new one will go with win 10 from the get go.

In games you'll see a massive difference from your 6950 that's for sure. To get the absolute best performance from all the Fury lineup you really need to be gaming at 1440p or above. In virtually every review the Fury's get butt-slapped at 1080p by a 980ti but the gap is less than 5% at 1440p and at 4k it's even trading blows with the 980ti.

If your budget can allow it I would heartily recommend going to a 27" IPS 1440p monitor and then your gaming experience will be awesome. It will then truely be like night and day compared to your old system.

Thats not true.
It depends on games and what else as crimson drivers improved this a lot.
the division for example at 1080p
in essence, in all circumstances its an equal performance between different brands of cards.

13307 3dmark score without overclocking. not too bad for a start. and gaming is sweet so far.
i need to dl a few new games i think. something for this rig to chew on.
