unable to update WDM components

I am trying to install the new Catalyst drivers, but I can't get through the WDM installation (8500DV on WXP Pro). The installation starts, but then gives me a message box that says, "unable to update WDM components." When I do ever reboot, Windows gives me the found new hardware/unknown device box (actually, six of them), and if I point it to the WDM\wdm_XP folder, it says that location does not have the drivers it wants. What now?

Did you install the catalyst drivers first? and then installed seperately the WDM drivers?

unable to update WDM components

I've done just about everything I can think of: uninstalled, re-installed WDM first (won't install), re-installed with Catalyst first then WDM (won't install), tried to manually install WDM (says no drivers found). One time, the WDM install seemed to be working, but on the final screen hung up. I let it sit for approx. 10 minutes, then finally forced it to end task. At that point I got a message saying that it had not installed, and, sure enough, when I rebooted, there were the six "new hardware found-unknown device" dialog boxes. Do I need to remove some registry entries or something here?
