Ultra Shadow II

can someone post a screenshot using ATI card(no US2) and another screenshot using NVIDIA's card?

I would like to see the difference.

yuck. i viewed the zoomed in gun ones first. then thought it looks that blocky because its zoomed in. then i looked at the zoomed out ones. geeze how can people be satisfied with that IQ?

Could you be a little bit more objective then to post a picture where right below it is labeled that it is a driver bug or should I post the Far Cry picks of the ATI card completely missing some shadows with their driver bug to balance it a little. :hmm:

Don't worry Kyle at HOCP is doing a huge Doom3 write up with all the cards this week that will include a large IQ section. That is probably the best way to see Ultra Shadow in action and compare the cards.

:keke:

I don't think ultrashadow II implicitly gives you better shadows but rather better performance with stencil shadows. I guess you could use the extra performace to create more complex shadows after that....I guess.

I think it'll be used to boost performance more than it will be used to add more detailed shadows but...I've not seen D3 fully yet so I'm wary to draw such comment any further.

It's possible, but I'm only making a logical assumption. I can't say I know enough to sat it will or won't happen.

the reviewer may have labeled his observation as a "driver bug" but that is nothing more than his opinion.

Thats really funny...

Perhaps we should talk about the 3-4 months that Nvidia had totally screwed up lighting and screwed up pixel shader effects in Farcry...

I thought UltraShadow was exclusive to OpenGL games...?

Anybody can use ultra shadow when coded for let it be OpenGL or DirectX. It's just a special feature that's not supported by DirectX and Nvidia decided to go with Carmacks specs. It can be used if the programmer so wishes to use it ( Like an extra feature ). Games like Splinter Cell will benefit from it etc. Any game with lots of shadows, well that's what I have read that is. I haven't seen it in action nor do I own a Nvidia 6xxx series to even test this. So I'm just going by whatever I have read about the technology. I think Doom III is the only one that is taking advantage of Ultra Shadow technology. So it's pretty limited at the moment :P

I am not so sure about the DirectX part... I read some stuff on nVidia's developer site some months ago about it being an OpenGL extension that has to be specifically coded for. So unless you found something that has changed that, I really doubt support exists for DirectX. This also means that the "shadow" advantage ppl claim nVidia has over ATI is practically non-existent, simply because apart from Doom3, I am unaware of any other developer that uses that feature (if there are any, please someone inform me :))

I haven't heard of UltraShadow being implemented in DirectX thus far.

And there's no point showing images of either Splinter Cell or Far Cry - Neither title has been coded to take advantage of UltraShadow. Doom 3 is the only supporting title (that I know of) thus far.

I guess people are getting confused between the shadow buffer (used by splinter cell 1 & 2 and is used in DX games but is not a part of DX specs and the games have to add support to use it) and Ultrashadow 1 / 2 (available in OGL games IF you add support in the game)

wow, that's a really big difference man..........

it is actually. see the x800 pro running at 1280x1024. the 6800 ultra is also running at that res too. hardocp finds the best resolution to play the game at.
