The only thing preventing me from getting a desktop

With gaming capable laptops finally moving to 120Hz+ 16:10 OLED screens, what's up with high-end desktop monitors sticking to 16:9? 16:10 desktop monitor specs are pretty much archaic at this point.

16:10 is much better for productivity and highly suitable for games. What's taking desktop monitor manufacturers so long? Like seriously?

We have ultrawide displays, and have for some time. Come join in on that awesomeness.

Bingo we have gone Ultrawide(21:9) and SuperUltrawide(32:9).

Old picture of my desk, but you get the idea.

QD OLED at 144Hz, 1000nit+ Brightness.

Why are y'all recommending ultrawide 16:9 screens to someone who want 16:10?

Those don't have the height that he is looking for, 24:10 is what he is looking for in the ultrawide space.

Well he's asking what happened. And two things happened.

1) 16:10 lost. Dell only makes 4 monitors now with the aspect ratio and Lenovo is down to 1.
2) Ultrawide. More horizontal space become more favoured. That doesn't surprise me, as dual monitors are common place. 21:9 is almost the same as 2 old school 5:4 monitors and 32:9 is the same as dual 16:9.

There are some Ultrawide's with a taller aspect ratio. But they are less common. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Lenovo's work centric Lenovo ThinkVision P44w-10 with a resolution of 3840x1200. There are however some 21:9's though that just go to a higher resolution of 3840x1600 to get more vertical pixel height over the more common 21:9 1440p resolution of 3440x1440.

The 3840x1600 monitors are not really 21:9 though, they are ultrawide 16:10 monitors, their "native" non uw resolution is 2560x1600, so he can have 16:10/UW 16:10 with those 38" monitors.

Good point. I hadn't really thought about them being the 21:9 progression from the 16:10 2560x1600 res. But it makes complete sense

If that’s the only thing keeping you from greatness then don’t let us stop you. :bleh:

Which ultrawide is that and what're your thoughts on it?

It's the Samsung CHG90 QLED.

Pro's
- 144hz
- 32:9 makes for an amazingly enveloping experience
- When 32:9 isn't supported I still get a 27" 16:9 centred image.
- Resolution of 3840x1080 allows this behemoth to be more easily driven.
- High static contrast ratio, RTing measured a little over 3700:1.
- I can use/display 2 inputs at once to get 2 x 27" displays. Making work from home really kinda nice.

Con's
- HDR support: It's ok but not amazing with only 8 dimmable zones(4 zones from each side). The high static contrast really helps make this work at all. Luckily the colours look pretty great and it gets brighter when needed.
- No HDMi 2.1
- 60Hz has high input lag.
- Not great for video. Although wider content looks pretty great, 16:9 content feels like I'm not really using the screen to it's fullest.
- Not everything supports 32:9. (that really hasn't been much of an issue for me. Almost everything I play does or can be easily tweaked/modded to.)

I've been absolutely loving it and will have a hard time ever going back from this aspect ratio. Especially when used in combo with PowerToy's Fancy Zones so I can snap windows around is more useful ways when not gaming. Feels so much cooler than dual monitors :)

My dream monitor:

3440x1440
360Hz
1000Nit Brightness
HDR10+ Dolby Vision
GSYNC/FREESYNC/VRR
QDOLED

The Alienware is close. They just need to climb that Hz ladder and get a little brighter.

What? They are monitors with vertically cut down 16:9 UHD panels..

Need 35 inch 16:9 4K 240 Hz monitor that is OLED without ABL.

This is really good feedback. I’m interested. Though I was eying the 1440p version of that monitor. But not the one that’s like $2k or whatever. The 120hz version of the 49” super ultrawide.

The CRG9

Also a pretty great monitor. Some things that are different.

- It can get considerably brighter. Up to 1000nits. Leading to nicer HDR.
- It has 2 more dimming zones @ 10 vs the 8 on mine. Not a big difference, but more is better.
- It's 60hz input lag is considerably lower
- It can't do 10-bit HDR @ 120Hz 4:4:4. DP 1.4 limitation. So it has to drop to 100Hz to do it(or maybe 4:2:2? I don't have one to test). Not sure that's really a big deal. And it looks great in SDR anyway, so when you needs that Hz, you can get em at 8-bit colour and things should still look great.
- It has a lower contrast ratio in the 2300:1 range. That still absolutely stomps IPS and it's further enhanced when you have local dimming.

Its resolution, 5120x1440, is also more like driving 4k. Little easier, but not much. That is the only reason I didn't choose it. Not only did I not have the hardware that could drive it when I was buying a new display, GPU's where both OP and hard to get. So I compromised and got the CHG90, couldn't be happier though as the display has been great :)
