The Invincible is a first-person retrofuturistic thriller, which is an adaptation of Stanislaw Lem's novel under the same title. The game is the responsibility of the newly established Starward Industries studio, whose ranks include developers previously working on such game as Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3 and Dying Light.
Plot
The world shown in The Invincible evolved differently than ours - it never entered the digital age. This means that all the highly advanced equipment appearing in the game is based on analog technology.
The player assumes the role of Yasna - a member of a group leading an interstellar research mission. Along with the beginning of the adventure she wakes up on an alien planet Regis III. She does not remember how she got here, but she knows that she did not come to this place alone. The other members of the crew, however, have disappeared without a trace and she will have to find them.
As she learns more about the fate of the crew she is looking for, it quickly becomes clear that Regis III is a very dangerous place. Not only are there agents of the hostile human empire here, but even worse, it soon turns out that the planet is inhabited by aggressive non-organic beings.
Mechanics
In The Invincible, we mainly deal with exploration, learning the story and overcoming puzzle and arcade challenges. During the game, our character is helped by Astrogator, who gives us helpful advice over the radio. We can also use a mechanical probe and a set of analogue machines, making it easier to overcome obstacles.
We observe the events from a first-person perspective. The plot is non-linear and its course changes depending on the decisions made by the player during the adventure. Along with the course of the story, we also learn about the past of each member of the research team.
Technical aspects
The Invincible was developed on Unreal Engine. Graphics is in retrofuturistic style, inspired by sci-fi novels and movies from the beginning of the Cold War.
