So I'm new to this whole usenet thing. I signed up at newsdemon. But I can't figure out where I create an API key for couch potato, or Sonarr.

Ugh I'm so confused. So the newsgroup is just my server. I need to get indexing sites to locate info. And couch potato and sonarr are just the organizers is that correct?

What indexing sites should I use?

Ugh I'm so confused.

It takes a day or two of playing about to wrap your head around it's intricacies, but it's worth the work....

Newsgroups are another section of the internet, just like the web and POP email; separate services making up the internet as a whole. While your ISP will give you access to the common cores, newsgroups are generally not included in your monthly ISP bill. You have to pay for access to newsgroups separately - i.e. newsdemon.

Large files posted to newsgroups are usually split into small chunks (100-200 MB ish) an .NZB file is a link to all of these parts. And the titles can sometimes be garbage, too (asljdhvalisdbv). The actual content is referenced from an included .NFO file which contains an accurate description of the post.

In short, newsgroups are an absolute bastard to navigate manually. This is where indexing sites come in. They trawl the various newsgroups looking at the NFO files, find out what it is (anime / linux ISO / whatever) and post it in a legible manner on their website with a link to the NZB.

Indexing sites usually have a (small) membership fee, too. 2 I recommend would be maitrix and oznzb. They might not be the fastest loading sites but they're well run.

Now you CAN just manually browse these sites and download stuff yourself using something like SABnzbd or NZBget. This is what I'd recommend if you're an infrequent downloader.

If you're planning on downloading massive libraries, then couch potato and sonarr do the searching of the indexing sites for you. Which can be handy if you're after lots of stuff. Throw a list at couch potato and it'll search the indexing site via the API and if it finds something, it'll hand it to SABnzbd to be downloaded. Et voila. Seemples, non?

It all sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Once you're up and running, it's pretty seamless.

Failing that, just buy your stuff from iTunes.

Gotcha, starting to wrap my head around the process. Getting it to work now.

My only problem currently is OZnzb, seems to reject saying invalid API, but apparently their API services are having problems? I've gotten other indexers to work.

Odd. They're having problems atm, but I've never had that error. It just either works or it doesn't. Typo maybe?
