SLI

After seeing this video tonight, I really need someone to explain this to me. I've kept quiet about any SLI discussions here for the most part, because it all seemed pointless to bother with. But, I simply can't understand why EVERYBODY thinks SLI is dead.

Every game I look up supports SLI and has reasonable performance using it. The only two games I can think of offhand that don't support it are Assassin's Creed Origins and Odyssey. All their old titles support it, only those two with the new game engine don't.

I realize micro-stutter is a real thing, and people are sensitive to it at different levels, like everything. I either didn't notice it, or never had it all the years I ran SLI. There is also price of two cards, which is a good reason (but that doesn't have any bearing on it being dead). Then there is also graphics performance of single top tier cards, which is also reasonable, and yet also still has no bearing on it being a dead hardware solution. If you play at 4k, there is still argument toward it. Especially if you're going twin 1070 Super's, a 2nd used 1080Ti, or something reasonable.

Popular games I can think of offhand that support SLI and have good framerates/decent scaling while using it the past few years.
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Battlefield 5 (and all others)
Far Cry 5 (and all others)
Witcher 3
Steampunk 2077 (SLI confirmed)
GTA 5
Project Cars 2
Dying Light
Ark: Survival Evolved
Star Wars: Battlefront 2
Metro: Last Light
Metro: Exodus (though not while using Ray Tracing)
Ghost Recon: Wildlands
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Mass Effect: Andromeda
PUBG
Middle Earth: Shadow of War
Resident Evil (seems like all of them)
Fallout 4
Dark Souls 3
..and a ton of other non-AAA titles or just recently released games that I'm not going to exhaustively list

I keep debating finding a used 1080Ti to toss in my system to get me the 4k frames I'm looking for. And for EVERY single game I look up that I play, exlusing Odyssey/Origins, I'm really struggling to see why not.

What am I missing or not understanding?

More than half of those games are really old. SLI is good if you wanna replay old games that supported SLI in the first place, like Dying light.

Resident Evil 7 (and 2 remake) does not support SLI.

Be careful about user created profiles or people telling you to run certain SLI bits. Most of the time all that does is even out GPU usage but the framerates are still the same, or there's extreme flickering or lighting issues. Like those telling SLI worked great with Elex with custom profiles, when it actually didn't because the lighting system was broke.

Almost none of the AAA games I played within the last 3 years supported SLI. If they did I would have remained with dual GTX 1080's and not upgraded to a 1080Ti (and later 2080Ti).

How many games officially support SLI these days? Hardly any. I remember being pissed I couldn't play Prey 2 at 4k and had to settle for 1440p because SLI wasn't supported. Was right after I played other games that didn't support SLI, like Resident Evil 7, Evil Within 2, Elex. 4 games in a row was too much, had to get a single more powerful card. Would have been 5 games in a row with Quantum Break, but got a 1080Ti upgrade from dual 1080's.

Are you sure Shadow of the tomb raider supports SLI? I quick check shows you can enable SLI via changing the bits, but then you have graphical anomalies. What's the point of SLI then?

SLI would be viable if TAA [Temporal Anti Aliasing] didn't break it most of the time, which most games use these days. Also, RTX doesn't seem to play nice with SLI, and DX12/Vulkan support is almost non existent.

this

I ran CFX/SLI from 2007 till my 980 SLI and Fury X CFX and stopped with the 1080 ti Strix at 4k and now with a 2080 ti Strix and moved the 1080 ti Strix over replacing the Fury x cfx

it just stopped working in new stuff .

plus you have a 1080 ti strix also and two 1080 ti strix's cards will not cool well at all
even a top blower card will not cool well as it will be sucking in the bottom cards exhaust

so plan on good full water with any SLI rig .
I have tried it many times and I always ended up on water
only two blower cards will work and even then the top card will be 5c hotter or more

a used 1080 ti strix and two EK waterblocks at about 160 USD each plus the rest of a full water setup will cost you more than a 2080 ti Strix
